Book excerpt: The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace

Book excerpt: The effects of heat treating environmental conditions on the stress-corrosion-cracking resistance of several titanium alloys have been studied. The alloys studied in this investigation were the Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V, Ti-7Al-1Mo-1V, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-7Al-2.5Mo alloys. Precracked cantilever type specimens were heat treated in either an inert atmosphere or in vacuum and tested in a 3.5 per cent salt water solution. A comparison of the stress intensity required for failure in salt water with that required for "dry" mechanical fracture indicates that all of these alloys become essentially insensitive to the aqueous environment when vacuum solution annealed and helium gas cooled. Similar heat treatments in argon or helium developed a wide range in level of stress-corrosion-cracking resistance for these alloys; the level was dependent upon the temperatures used. The environmental conditions associated with aging treatments at 1200F following the solution anneal appear to have little effect on the stress-corrosion-cracking resistance of these alloys. Comparison of the stress-corrosion-cracking data with hydrogen content before and after treatment indicates a close connection between stress-corrosion-cracking sensitivity and hydrogen content in the material even at very low hydrogen levels. These results suggest that hydrogen contained in the metal may play an important role in the stress-corrosion cracking process of titanium alloys.

Book excerpt: Deformation and Fracture Mechanics of Engineering Materials, Sixth Edition, provides a detailed examination of the mechanical behavior of metals, ceramics, polymers, and their composites. Offering an integrated macroscopic/microscopic approach to the subject, this comprehensive textbook features in-depth explanations, plentiful figures and illustrations, and a full array of student and instructor resources. Divided into two sections, the text first introduces the principles of elastic and plastic deformation, including the plastic deformation response of solids and concepts of stress, strain, and stiffness. The following section demonstrates the application of fracture mechanics and materials science principles in solids, including determining material stiffness, strength, toughness, and time-dependent mechanical response. Now offered as an interactive eBook, this fully-revised edition features a wealth of digital assets. More than three hours of high-quality video footage helps students understand the practical applications of key topics, supported by hundreds of PowerPoint slides highlighting important information while strengthening student comprehension. Numerous real-world examples and case studies of actual service failures illustrate the importance of applying fracture mechanics principles in failure analysis. Ideal for college-level courses in metallurgy and materials, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering, this popular is equally valuable for engineers looking to increase their knowledge of the mechanical properties of solids.
