Book excerpt: For almost three hundred years, excavations have been carried out in Roman Bath. At first these were rare and sporadic and archaeological finds were made by chance. Even fewer were reported. But from the 1860s, deliberate investigations were made and increasingly professional methods employed. The Roman Baths were laid open to view, but little was published. From the 1950s, interest accelerated, professionals and amateurs collaborated, and there was never a decade in which some new discovery was not made. The first popular but authoritative presentation of this work was made in 1971 and updated several times. However, from the 1990s to the present there has been some sort of archaeological investigation almost every year. This has thrown much new and unexpected light on the town of Aquae Sulis and its citizens. In this book, Peter Davenport, having been involved in most of the archaeological work in Bath since 1980, attempts to tell the story of Roman Bath: the latest interim report on the 'Three Hundred Year Dig'.

Within these pages, you will meet great goddesses such as Brigid, the Morrigan, Sulis, Rhiannon, Rosmerta, and Elen of the Ways, as well as faery women like Melusine and Morgan Le Fae. Celtic Goddess Grimoire introduces you to goddesses of magic like Cerridwen, Arianrhod, and Blodeuwedd, as well as goddesses of justice, healing, and sovereignty. This book also explores the Ladies of the Lake, including the original Lake Lady from The Mabinogi. It shines a spotlight on the most prominent Celtic female divinities but also includes a section devoted to lesser-known goddesses of the Celtic world, such as the mysterious Nehalennia, who was nearly lost before her shrine was recovered from the depths of the North Sea. A practical guide to working with these sacred beings, this book includes exercises for celebrating, honoring, and serving them. Author Annwyn Avalon provides chants, rituals, spells, and meditations. Learn how to build altars, craft charms, and actively invoke these Celtic goddesses so that they become a living, vital presence in your spiritual life. Annwyn also provides information about the meanings of the names of these sacred beings, their sacred symbols and creatures, as well as their personal powers, realms of strongest influence, and historical context. Annwyn Avalon, a water priestess and Celtic witch, is the founder of Water Priestess Training, the Water Priestess Confluence, and Triskele Rose Witchcraft, an Avalonian witchcraft tradition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has determined in an earlier McFarland book (The Historic King Arthur, 1996, paperback 2007) that there was not a historic King Arthur during the sixth century. However, as listed in The Historia Brittonum, there was a “great king of all the kings of Britain” named Ambrosius Aurelianus who was conflated with a heroic Arthur of the second century, and hence with the legendary King Arthur. To further authenticate the Celtic/Romano “King Arthur,”—that is, Ambrosius—the author here examines seven major historical figures of the period A.D. 383–500 based upon the Genealogical Preface of The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the emendation of dates in that chronicle. Those seven allies and adversaries are Vortigern, Vortimer, Vitalinus, Cunedda, Cerdic, Octha, and Mordred. Through an extensive analysis of Arthur’s 12 battles listed in the Historia Brittonum, this work explores both the influences of the High King’s allies, and the shifting allegiances of his enemies. A battle list provides possible geographic locations for each of the battles, including a new site for Arthur’s fateful battle at Camlann.
