Book Synopsis Apuleius' Cupid and Psyche: An Intermediate Latin Reader: Latin Text with Running Vocabulary and Commentary by : Stephen Nimis
Download or read book Apuleius' Cupid and Psyche: An Intermediate Latin Reader: Latin Text with Running Vocabulary and Commentary written by Stephen Nimis and published by Faenum Publishing, Limited. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to make the story of "Cupid and Psyche" from Apuleius' The Golden Ass accessible to intermediate students of Ancient Latin. The running vocabulary and grammatical commentary are meant to provide everything necessary to read each page so that readers can progress through the text, improving their knowledge of Latin while enjoying one of the most delightful stories from antiquity. Apuleius' "Cupid and Psyche" is a great text for intermediate readers. Its plot resembles fairy tales such as "Beauty and the Beast" and "Cinderella," but its literary texture is typical of the rest of the Golden Ass. With its narrative of betrayal and redemption and a harrowing descent into the underworld, the tale of Cupid and Psyche has been viewed as a parallel to the The Golden Ass as a whole, as well as an allegory for the redemption of the soul. But it has also been admired as a light-hearted fairy tale ending in marital bliss - a simple tale told to a frightened captive girl. Like many fairy tales, however, this one includes dark and disturbing elements that also parallel the dark conclusion to the captive girl's own tale in The Golden Ass.
Book Synopsis Apuleius: Cupid and Psyche by : Apuleius
Download or read book Apuleius: Cupid and Psyche written by Apuleius and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-12-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apuleius' story of Cupid and Psyche, the relationship of the human Soul with divine Love, is one of the great allegories of world literature. It forms an integral part of and profoundly illuminates the message of his novel Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass, which relates the adventures of a young man and his spiritual fall and redemption. To enrich and deepen his basic plot, the origins of which are obscure, Apuleius has combined poetic sources, Platonic philosophy and popular iconography in an unprecedented tour de force of literary creation. This edition sensitively elucidates the subtle art with which this transformation has been accomplished, and comprehensively illustrates both Apuleius' inventive handling of his various models and sources and the exuberant and idiosyncratic Latinity with forms the vehicle for it. It places in a fresh light the results of recent work on the ancient Novel and on Apuleius himself, and offers a stimulating, occasionally provocative, reading of his much-discussed text. The Latin is accompanied by a facing English translation, making the edition more accessible to students of comparative literature as well as to classicists.

Download or read book Selections from Apuleius Metamorphoses V written by Stuart R. Thomson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first intermediate-student edition of a selection from Apuleius' Metamorphoses V. Sections 11–24 are included as Latin text with an accompanying commentary and vocabulary. Focusing on a deliberately concise extract from the original, this edition is designed to be manageable for students reading the text for the first time while also perfectly encapsulating the interest of the longer work and inspiring further study of it. A detailed introduction explains points of literary and stylistic interest, encompassing the beginning of the story, from Metamorphoses IV, section 28. Apuleius is considered one of the great Latin stylists. The tale of Cupid and Psyche, a story set within the larger narrative of his novel, the Metamorphoses, follows the romance of the god of love, Cupid, and his mortal lover, Psyche, brought to disaster by the wiles of Psyche's wicked sisters and the anger of Venus, but eventually reconciled. It is both an adventure story, and an allegory for the relationship between the soul and desire. The selection here contains some of the most hauntingly beautiful Latin prose which has come down to us and gives an unparallelled insight into the relationship between philosophy, religion, and art under the high empire.

Book Synopsis Lucian's a true story by : Lucian (of Samosata.)
Download or read book Lucian's a true story written by Lucian (of Samosata.) and published by Edgar Evan Hayes. This book was released on 2011 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to make Lucian's A True Story accessible to intermediate students of Ancient Greek. The running vocabulary and commentary are meant to provide everything necessary to read each page. Lucian's A True Story is a great text for intermediate readers. Its breathless narrative does not involve many complex sentences or constructions; there is some unusual vocabulary and a few departures from Attic Greek, but for the most part it is a straightforward narrative that is fun and interesting by one of antiquity's cleverest authors. In A True Story, Lucian parodies accounts of fanciful adventures and travel to incredible places by authors such as Ctesias and Iambulus. The story's combination of mockery and learning makes it an excellent example of the Greek literature of the imperial period. Revised August, 2014.
