Book Synopsis Waste Biorefinery by : Thallada Bhaskar
Download or read book Waste Biorefinery written by Thallada Bhaskar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-02-24 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste Biorefinery: Value Addition through Resources Utilization provides scientific and technical information surrounding the most advanced and innovative processing technologies used for the conversion of biogenic waste to biofuels, energy products and biochemicals. The book covers recent developments and achievements in the field of biochemical, thermo-chemical and hybrid methods and the necessities and potentials generated by different kinds of residual streams, including biomass in presumably more decentralized biorefineries. An assortment of case-studies from developing and developed countries illustrate the topics presented, covering energy, chemicals, fuels, food for animal recovery from different waste matrices, and more. Finally, the advantages and limitations of different technologies are discussed, considering local energy demand, government policies, environmental impacts and education in bioenergy. This book will serve as an excellent resource for science graduates, chemical engineers, environmental engineers, biotechnologists and industrial experts in these areas. - Provides information on the most advanced and innovative processes for biomass conversion - Covers information on biochemical and thermochemical processes and product developments surrounding the principles of biorefining - Presents information on the integration of processes and technologies for the production of biofuels, energy products and biochemicals

Book Synopsis Towards Sustainability in the Wine Industry by Valorization of Waste Products by : Patricia Joyce Pamela Zorro Mateus
Download or read book Towards Sustainability in the Wine Industry by Valorization of Waste Products written by Patricia Joyce Pamela Zorro Mateus and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in our Sustainability: Contributions through Science and Technology series reviews the use of alternative green technologies (pressurized liquid and super-critical fluid extractions) for grape biomass valorization. Environmental sustainability and circular economy are discussed in relation to agro-industrial waste in the winemaking industry. The waste contaminates water and soil and, in large quantities, it has been related to bad odors, a high content of organic matter in water, and greenhouse gas emissions over the entire winemaking industry. Here, the authors illustrate how green extraction of commercially valuable substances can be scaled up at an industrial level. Features : Reports on waste valorization in the winemaking industry and converting the waste into more useful products including oils, antioxidants and other valuable materials Explores research which contributes to environmental sustainability and circular economy in the winemaking industry Describes other ways to reduce the ecological footprint of the wine industry such as using less fertilizer, more benign pesticides and reduction of water footprint Proposes options for a potential wine waste biorefining. Reviews alternative uses of agro-industrial wine wastes as sources of additives for the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Book Synopsis Instituting Nature by : Andrew S. Mathews
Download or read book Instituting Nature written by Andrew S. Mathews and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of how encounters between forestry bureaucrats and indigenous forest managers in Mexico produced official knowledge about forests and the state. Greater knowledge and transparency are often promoted as the keys to solving a wide array of governance problems. In Instituting Nature, Andrew Mathews describes Mexico's efforts over the past hundred years to manage its forests through forestry science and biodiversity conservation. He shows that transparent knowledge was produced not by official declarations or scientists' expertise but by encounters between the relatively weak forestry bureaucracy and the indigenous people who manage and own the pine forests of Mexico. Mathews charts the performances, collusions, complicities, and evasions that characterize the forestry bureaucracy. He shows that the authority of forestry officials is undermined by the tension between local realities and national policy; officials must juggle sweeping knowledge claims and mundane concealments, ambitious regulations and routine rule breaking. Moving from government offices in Mexico City to forests in the state of Oaxaca, Mathews describes how the science of forestry and bureaucratic practices came to Oaxaca in the 1930s and how local environmental and political contexts set the stage for local resistance. He tells how the indigenous Zapotec people learned the theory and practice of industrial forestry as employees and then put these skills to use when they become the owners and managers of the area's pine forests—eventually incorporating forestry into their successful claims for autonomy from the state. Despite the apparently small scale and local contexts of this balancing act between the power of forestry regulations and the resistance of indigenous communities, Mathews shows that it has large implications—for how we understand the modern state, scientific knowledge, and power and for the global carbon markets for which Mexican forests might become valuable.
