Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a common setting for various methods of bounding the eigenvalues of a self-adjoint linear operator and emphasizes their relationships. A mapping principle is presented to connect many of the methods. The eigenvalue problems studied are linear, and linearization is shown to give important information about nonlinear problems. Linear vector spaces and their properties are used to uniformly describe the eigenvalue problems presented that involve matrices, ordinary or partial differential operators, and integro-differential operators.

Book excerpt: One of the most important chapters in modern functional analysis is the theory of approximate methods for solution of various mathematical problems. Besides providing considerably simplified approaches to numerical methods, the ideas of functional analysis have also given rise to essentially new computation schemes in problems of linear algebra, differential and integral equations, nonlinear analysis, and so on. The general theory of approximate methods includes many known fundamental results. We refer to the classical work of Kantorovich; the investigations of projection methods by Bogolyubov, Krylov, Keldysh and Petrov, much furthered by Mikhlin and Pol'skii; Tikho nov's methods for approximate solution of ill-posed problems; the general theory of difference schemes; and so on. During the past decade, the Voronezh seminar on functional analysis has systematically discussed various questions related to numerical methods; several advanced courses have been held at Voronezh Uni versity on the application of functional analysis to numerical mathe matics. Some of this research is summarized in the present monograph. The authors' aim has not been to give an exhaustive account, even of the principal known results. The book consists of five chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago, the term "defect correction" was introduced to characterize a class of methods for the improvement of an approximate solution of an operator equation. This class includes many well-known techniques (e.g. Newton's method) but also some novel approaches which have turned out to be quite efficient. Meanwhile a large number of papers and reports, scattered over many journals and institutions, have appeared in this area. Therefore, a working conference on "Error Asymptotics and Defect Corrections" was organized by K. Bohmer, V. Pereyra and H. J. Stetter at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach in July 1983, a meeting which aimed at bringing together a good number of the scientists who are active in this field. Altogether 26 persons attended, whose interests covered a wide spectrum from theoretical analyses to applications where defect corrections may be utilized; a list of the participants may be found in the Appendix. Most of the colleagues who presented formal lectures at the meeting agreed to publish their reports in this volume. It would be presumptuous to call this book a state-of-the-art report in defect corrections. It is rather a collection of snapshots of activities which have been going on in a number of segments on the frontiers of this area. No systematic coverage has been attempted. Some articles focus strongly on the basic concepts of defect correction; but in the majority of the contributions the defect correction ideas appear rather as instruments for the attainment of some specified goal.

Topics covered include interval linear algebra and computational complexity, Birkhoff polynomial basis, tensors, graphs, linear pencils, K-theory and statistic inference, showing the ubiquity of matrices in different mathematical areas. With a particular focus on matrix and operator theory, statistical models and computation, the International Conference on Matrix Analysis and its Applications 2015, held in Coimbra, Portugal, was the sixth in a series of conferences. Applied and Computational Matrix Analysis will appeal to graduate students and researchers in theoretical and applied mathematics, physics and engineering who are seeking an overview of recent problems and methods in matrix analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many problems in science and engineering have their mathematical formulation as an operator equation Tx=y, where T is a linear or nonlinear operator between certain function spaces. In practice, such equations are solved approximately using numerical methods, as their exact solution may not often be possible or may not be worth looking for due to physical constraints. In such situations, it is desirable to know how the so-called approximate solution approximates the exact solution, and what the error involved in such procedures would be. This book is concerned with the investigation of the above theoretical issues related to approximately solving linear operator equations. The main tools used for this purpose are basic results from functional analysis and some rudimentary ideas from numerical analysis. To make this book more accessible to readers, no in-depth knowledge on these disciplines is assumed for reading this book.

Book excerpt: This book concentrates on the branching solutions of nonlinear operator equations and the theory of degenerate operator-differential equations especially applicable to algorithmic analysis and nonlinear PDE's in mechanics and mathematical physics. The authors expound the recent result on the generalized eigen-value problem, the perturbation method, Schmidt's pseudo-inversion for regularization of linear and nonlinear problems in the branching theory and group methods in bifurcation theory. The book covers regular iterative methods in a neighborhood of branch points and the theory of differential-operator equations with a non-invertible operator in the main expression is constructed. Various recent results on theorems of existence are given including asymptotic, approximate and group methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise text introduces numerical analysis as a practical, problem-solving discipline. The three-part presentation begins with the fundamentals of functional analysis and approximation theory. Part II outlines the major results of theoretical numerical analysis, reviewing product integration, approximate expansion methods, the minimization of functions, and related topics. Part III considers specific subjects that illustrate the power and usefulness of theoretical analysis. Ideal as a text for a one-year graduate course, the book also offers engineers and scientists experienced in numerical computing a simple introduction to the major ideas of modern numerical analysis. Some practical experience with computational mathematics and the ability to relate this experience to new concepts is assumed. Otherwise, no background beyond advanced calculus is presupposed. Moreover, the ideas of functional analysis used throughout the text are introduced and developed only to the extent they are needed.

Book excerpt: This is a textbook on classical polynomial and rational approximation theory for the twenty-first century. Aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students across all of applied mathematics, it uses MATLAB to teach the field’s most important ideas and results. Approximation Theory and Approximation Practice, Extended Edition differs fundamentally from other works on approximation theory in a number of ways: its emphasis is on topics close to numerical algorithms; concepts are illustrated with Chebfun; and each chapter is a PUBLISHable MATLAB M-file, available online. The book centers on theorems and methods for analytic functions, which appear so often in applications, rather than on functions at the edge of discontinuity with their seductive theoretical challenges. Original sources are cited rather than textbooks, and each item in the bibliography is accompanied by an editorial comment. In addition, each chapter has a collection of exercises, which span a wide range from mathematical theory to Chebfun-based numerical experimentation. This textbook is appropriate for advanced undergraduate or graduate students who have an understanding of numerical analysis and complex analysis. It is also appropriate for seasoned mathematicians who use MATLAB.

Book excerpt: This book presents selected papers from the 3rd International Workshop on Computational Engineering held in Stuttgart from October 6 to 10, 2014, bringing together innovative contributions from related fields with computer science and mathematics as an important technical basis among others. The workshop discussed the state of the art and the further evolution of numerical techniques for simulation in engineering and science. We focus on current trends in numerical simulation in science and engineering, new requirements arising from rapidly increasing parallelism in computer architectures, and novel mathematical approaches. Accordingly, the chapters of the book particularly focus on parallel algorithms and performance optimization, coupled systems, and complex applications and optimization.
