Book excerpt: UNE MINORITE DES ADOLESCENTS QUI DECLARENT DES TROUBLES PSYCHOLOGIQUES BENEFICIENT D'UNE EVALUATION PSYCHIATRIQUE. NOTRE OBJECTIF PRINCIPAL ETAIT DONC, PAR UNE APPROCHE EPIDEMIOLOGIQUE EN POPULATION GENERALE, DE METTRE EN EVIDENCE LES FACTEURS (PSYCHOSOCIAUX, RELATIONNELS, CONDUITES DE DEMANDE D'AIDE) QUI LIMITENT LE RECOURS AUX SOINS ET LA PRISE EN CHARGE PAR LES SERVICES SPECIALISES OU NON SPECIALISES, DES TROUBLES PSYCHIATRIQUES DE L'ADOLESCENT. AINSI, DANS LE CAS DE TROUBLES EMOTIONNELS, CERTAINS FACTEURS DE GRAVITE PSYCHOPATHOLOGIQUE FAVORISENT LA DEMANDE DE SOINS (INTENSITE DES SYMPTOMES EMOTIONNELS, COMORBIDITE AVEC DES TROUBLES DES CONDUITES ET SOMATIQUES) ET D'AUTRES LA LIMITE COMME LE SEXE MASCULIN, L'AGE (LES PLUS JEUNES), ET LE MANQUE D'INVESTISSEMENT DES PAIRS. UNE TROISIEME CATEGORIE DE FACTEURS FAVORISENT L'ACCES AUX SERVICES MAIS NE SONT PAS DES FACTEURS DE RISQUE PSYCHOPATHOLOGIQUE COMME LA SEPARATION DES PARENTS ET L'ABSENTEISME SCOLAIRE. AYANT ISOLE UN GROUPE A HAUT RISQUE PSYCHIATRIQUE, NOUS OBSERVONS QU'UN QUART EST ORIENTE VERS UN SERVICE SPECIALISE (PSYCHIATRIQUE OU SOCIAL). CECI NE DEPEND PAS DES CARACTERISTIQUES PSYCHOPATHOLOGIQUES ET RELATIONNELLES DES ADOLESCENTS: LES JEUNES QUI PRESENTENT DES SYMPTOMES MULTIPLES ET QUI SONT DANS UNE SITUATION FAMILIALE SPECIFIQUE (PARENTS SEPARES ET PROBLEMES RELATIONNELS INTRAFAMILIAUX) PEUVENT TOUT AUSSI BIEN ETRE ORIENTE EN PSYCHIATRIE OU VERS UN SERVICE SOCIAL. EN EFFET, SE SONT LES PROFESSIONNELS RENCONTRES QUI DETERMINENT LE TYPE DE PRISE EN CHARGE: LE MEDECIN GENERALISTE ORIENTE PLUTOT VERS LE PSYCHIATRE, LES PROFESSIONNELS DE SANTE SCOLAIRE REFERENT VERS LES SERVICES SOCIAUX. LES GENERALISTES ET LES TRAVAILLEURS SOCIAUX APPARAISSENT ETRE LES INTERMEDIAIRES CLES DANS LE PROCESSUS MENANT A LA PRISE EN CHARGE DES TROUBLES PSYCHIATRIQUES DE L'ADOLESCENT. IL IMPORTE DONC DE MIEUX COMPRENDRE LES PRATIQUES DE CES PROFESSIONNELS

This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: (Publisher-supplied data) This book represents the first systematic discussion of the Gateway Hypothesis, a developmental hypothesis formulated to model how adolescents initiate and progress in the use of various drugs. In the United States, this progression proceeds from the use of tobacco or alcohol to the use of marijuana and other illicit drugs. This volume presents a critical overview of what is currently known about the Gateway Hypothesis. The authors of the chapters explore the hypothesis from various perspectives ranging from developmental social psychology to prevention and intervention science, animal models, neurobiology and analytical methodology. This volume is original and unique in its purview, covering a broad view of the Gateway Hypothesis. The juxtaposition of epidemiological, intervention, animal and neurobiological studies represents a new stage in the evolution of drug research, in which epidemiology and biology inform one another in the understanding of drug abuse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrant psychiatry is an evolving subdiscipline within cultural psychiatry that deals with the impact of migration on the mental health of those who have migrated and those who work with these groups and provide services to them. Stress related to migration affects migrants and their extended families either directly or indirectly. The process of migration is not just a phase, but leads on to a series of adjustments, including acculturation, which may occur across generations. Factors such as changes in diet, attitudes and beliefs, and overall adjustment are important in settling down and making the individuals feel secure. This period of adjustment will depend upon the individual migrant's pre-migration experiences, migration process and post-migration experiences, but also upon an individual's personality, social support and emotional response to migration. Socio-demographic factors, such as age, gender, educational, and economic status will all play a role in post-migration adjustment. In order to understand the impact on individuals, not only the type of migration and different stressors, but also the types of psychological mechanisms at a personal level and the resources and processes at a societal level need to be explored. Despite the number of refugees and asylum seekers around the world increasing at an astonishing rate, the mental health needs of migrants are often ignored by policy makers and clinicians. The Oxford Textbook of Migrant Psychiatry is designed to serve as the comprehensive reference resource on the mental health of migrants, bringing together both theoretical and practical aspects of the mental health needs of refugees and asylum seekers for researchers and professionals. Individual chapters summarise theoretical constructs related to theories of migration, the impact of migration on mental health and adjustment, collective trauma, individual identity and diagnostic fallacies. The book also covers the practical aspects of patient management including cultural factors, ethnopsychopharmacology, therapeutic interaction and therapeutic expectation, and psychotherapy. Finally, the book will examine special clinical problems and special patient groups. Part of the authoritative Oxford Textbooks in Psychiatry series, this resource will serve as an essential reference for psychiatrists, mental health professionals, general practitioners/primary care physicians, social workers, policy makers and voluntary agencies dealing with refugees and asylum seekers.

Book excerpt: Finding out that your child has Asperger's Syndrome or Autism can be devastating enough, but when you discover that he or she won't eat 99.9 per cent of all food and drink in the known universe, the fun really starts. This was the situation the author found herself in a decade ago when her son first took a dislike to milk, and then to virtually every other substance she attempted to feed him. Her book was written to reassure other parents that there are lots of people out there in the same boat, and to suggest practical methods of dealing with the problem. As well as drawing on her own experience, the author has spoken to parents, children, and professionals with first-hand knowledge of dietary difficulties, and their advice and comments form a key part of the book.
