Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected Essays in Architectural Criticism is an indispensable anthology of writing by one of the most important voices in architectural theory of the last 50 years. Born in 1921, Colquhoun graduated from the Architectural Association in 1949. Currently Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Princeton University, he has taught at the AA, Cornell University and University College Dublin, among many other schools of architecture. He is the author of several books including the seminal Essays in Architectural Criticism, 1981, Modernity and the Classical Tradition, 1991, (both republished here in their entirety) and The Oxford History of Modern Architecture, 2002. This book includes essays from throughout Colquhoun's distinguished career. In his early writing Colquhoun subjects modern architecture to a far more thorough reading than was then customary. His meticulous evaluation of Modernism raised the standard of architectural historiography and has influenced new directions in theory and practice ever since. Collected Essays in Architectural Criticism encompasses the clarity of style and rigorous, erudite analysis that Colquhoun has brought to bear on a diverse range of subjects, including Le Corbusier, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, the Pompidou Centre, Postmodernism and the design of museums.

Book Synopsis Augmentative and Alternative Communication by : Stephen von Tetzchner
Download or read book Augmentative and Alternative Communication written by Stephen von Tetzchner and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2002-12-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text describes the development of augmentative and alternative communication. The focus is not on disabilities, although the atypical developmental paths to language described in this book are caused by a variety of disabilities, but on the developmental achievements of children using augmentative and alternative communication systems. This book is a first attempt to look at the achievements of children using alternative language forms from a broad developmental perspective and discuss how their semantic, grammatical and pragmatic development is promoted through social interactions, both planned and incidental in nature, that take place in particular sociocultural circumstances. The authors use small group data and dialogues to show how the children use grammatical structures and strategies to convey meaning and solve communicative challenges. The overall aim of the book is to inspire a shift towards a developmental understanding of augmentative and alternative communication in both research and clinical practice, leading to new knowledge and a better basis for intervention practices, and thereby to improved social and societal participation for children using augmentative and alternative communication.

Book Synopsis Mothering While Black by : Dawn Marie Dow
Download or read book Mothering While Black written by Dawn Marie Dow and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mothering While Black examines the complex lives of the African American middle class—in particular, black mothers and the strategies they use to raise their children to maintain class status while simultaneously defining and protecting their children’s “authentically black” identities. Sociologist Dawn Marie Dow shows how the frameworks typically used to research middle-class families focus on white mothers’ experiences, inadequately capturing the experiences of African American middle- and upper-middle-class mothers. These limitations become apparent when Dow considers how these mothers apply different parenting strategies for black boys and for black girls, and how they navigate different expectations about breadwinning and childrearing from the African American community. At the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, work, family, and culture, Mothering While Black sheds light on the exclusion of African American middle-class mothers from the dominant cultural experience of middle-class motherhood. In doing so, it reveals the painful truth of the decisions that black mothers must make to ensure the safety, well-being, and future prospects of their children.
Book Synopsis On the Death and Life of Languages by : Claude Hagège
Download or read book On the Death and Life of Languages written by Claude Hagège and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five languages die each year; at this pace, half the world’s five thousand languages will disappear within the next century. In this timely book, Claude Hagège seeks to make clear the magnitude of the cultural loss represented by the crisis of language death. By focusing on the relationship of language to culture and the world of ideas, Hagège shows how languages are themselves crucial repositories of culture; the traditions, proverbs, and knowledge of our ancestors reside in the language we use. His wide-ranging examination covers all continents and language families to uncover not only how languages die, but also how they can be revitalized—for example in the remarkable case of Hebrew. In a striking metaphor, Hagège likens languages to bonfires of social behavior that leave behind sparks even after they die; from these sparks languages can be rekindled and made to live again.
