Book Synopsis A History of Race in Muslim West Africa, 1600-1960 by : Bruce S. Hall
Download or read book A History of Race in Muslim West Africa, 1600-1960 written by Bruce S. Hall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobilization of local ideas about racial difference has been important in generating, and intensifying, civil wars that have occurred since the end of colonial rule in all of the countries that straddle the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. From Sudan to Mauritania, the racial categories deployed in contemporary conflicts often hearken back to an older history in which blackness could be equated with slavery and non-blackness with predatory and uncivilized banditry. This book traces the development of arguments about race over a period of more than 350 years in one important place along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert: the Niger Bend in northern Mali. Using Arabic documents held in Timbuktu, as well as local colonial sources in French and oral interviews, Bruce S. Hall reconstructs an African intellectual history of race that long predated colonial conquest, and which has continued to orient inter-African relations ever since.
Book Synopsis Divine Names on the Spot by : Fabio Porzia
Download or read book Divine Names on the Spot written by Fabio Porzia and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ancient Greek and Semitic languages resorted to a large range of words to name the divine. Gods and goddesses were called by a variety of names and combinations of onomastic attributes. This broad lexicon of names is characterised by plurality and a tendency to build on different sequences of names; therefore, the Mapping Ancient Polytheisms project focuses on the process of naming the divine in order to better understand the ancient divine in terms of a plurality in the making. A fundamental rule for reading ancient divine names is to grasp them in their context - time and place, a ritual, the form of the discourse, a cultural milieu...: a deity is usually named according to a specific situation. From Artemis Eulochia to al-Lat, al-'Uzza and Manat, from Melqart to "my rock" in the biblical book of Psalms, this volume journeys between the sanctuary on Mount Gerizim and late antique magical practices, revisiting rituals, hymnic poetry, oaths of orators and philosophical prayers. While targeting different names in different contexts, the contributors draft theoretical propositions towards a dynamic approach of naming the divine in antiquity.'

Book Synopsis Looking Beyond the Hijab by : Stephen Michael Croucher
Download or read book Looking Beyond the Hijab written by Stephen Michael Croucher and published by Hampton Press (NJ). This book was released on 2009 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume is one of the only case studies that tests cultural adaptation theory in the real world. It examines the failed cultural integration of France's Muslim population and the tension that has resulted. Through the use of in-depth interviews with Muslims and non-Muslims in France, this analysis reveals that French-Muslims are unable and unwilling to completely assimilate to French culture. This finding runs counter to cultural adaptation theory. Readers will find the text both theoretically engaging and filled with rich interviews from French men and women from many walks of life." -- Book cover.
Book Synopsis Proust, China and Intertextual Engagement by : Shuangyi Li
Download or read book Proust, China and Intertextual Engagement written by Shuangyi Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the literary journey that Proust’s work made to China and back by means of translation, intertextual engagement, and the creation of a transcultural dialogue through migrant literature. It begins with a translation history of Proust’s work in China and studies the different (re)translations and editions of La Recherche highlighting their culturally conditioned thematic emphases and negligence, such as time and memory over anti-Semitism and homosexuality. The book then moves on to explore three contemporary mainland Chinese writers’ creative intertextual engagement with Proust against the backdrop of China's explosive development from modernity to post-modernity in the 1990s. Finally, back to France, the book examines the multifarious literary relations between Proust and the Franco-Chinese migrant writer François Cheng. It demonstrates how the cultural heritages of China and the West can be re-negotiated and put into dialogue through the fictional and creative medium of literature, as well as providing a means of understanding the economic, political, and cultural exchanges in our current global context.

Download or read book Beauvoir in Time written by Meryl Altman and published by Value Inquiry Book. This book was released on 2020 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beauvoir in Time situates Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex in the historical context of its writing and in later contexts of its international reception, from then till now. The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of her writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing Beauvoir is still good to think with today"--
Download or read book The Simple Past written by Driss Chraibi and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Simple Past came out in 1954, and both in France and its author’s native Morocco the book caused an explosion of fury. The protagonist, who shares the author’s name, Driss, comes from a Moroccan family of means, his father a self-made tea merchant, the most devout of Muslims, quick to be provoked and ready to lash out verbally or physically, continually bent on subduing his timid wife and many children to his iron and ever-righteous will. He is known, simply, as the Lord, and Driss, who is in high school, is in full revolt against both him and the French colonial authorities, for whom, as much as for his father, he is no one. Driss Chraïbi’s classic coming-of-age story is about colonialism, Islam, the subjection of women, and finding, as his novel does, a voice that is as cutting and coruscating as it is original and free.
