Les responsables politiques du monde entier l’évoquent dans les discours de politique générale comme un levier de pouvoir majeur. C’est que l’intelligence artificielle va désormais jouer un rôle bien plus important que celui qu’elle jouait jusqu’alors et, plus que jamais, il nous faut donner un sens à son développement. Donner un sens, c’est d’abord donner une direction, un cap, pour positionner la France et l’Europe à l’avant-garde de cette révolution naissante. C’est également lui donner une signification : l’intelligence artificielle n’a précisément de sens que si elle participe du progrès humain, social et environnemental. Dans un monde marqué par les inégalités, elle ne doit pas conduire à renforcer les phénomènes d’exclusion et la concentration de la valeur. Donner un sens, c’est enfin expliquer : démystifier ces technologies auprès de la société, mais aussi expliquer l’intelligence artificielle en elle-même, s’agissant de techniques qui restent empreintes d’une très forte opacité. Donner un sens à l’IA, voilà donc l’objectif de ce rapport.

Systèmes experts et systèmes à base de connaissance sont de plus en plus utilisés pour permettre la production, le traitement et la diffusion « intelligente » de l’information. Ces termes sont appelés à, progressivement, se substituer à ceux de bases ou de banques de données. Le remplacement du système d’information par le système d’information intelligent passe, en effet, par l’utilisation de toutes les techniques de l’intelligence artificielle : techniques d’inférence et systèmes interactifs d’aide à la décision. Le progrès va vite. Pourtant, les professionnels de l’information et de la communication n’ont pas encore pris la mesure de l’impact des techniques de l’intelligence artificielle à différents niveaux de leur vie professionnelle. C’est l’objectif de ce travail qui dresse une vue de l’ensemble des applications de l’intelligence artificielle dans les synthèses, dans les systèmes d’information, de l’acquisition des données aux systèmes experts et fait le point sur les expériences et les réalisations dans ce domaine.

It includes two keynote addresses that discussed architectural issues for expert systems in real-time control; the problem of representing knowledge and reasoning; and the problems encountered in obtaining such information. Other papers contained in these proceedings are representative of the major research bodies active throughout the world in the application of AI techniques in real-time control, although it was inevitable that a Europe-based conference would highlight the work of the European groups. While AI is clearly still in the process of establishing itself, it is undoubtedly a major new area of engineering endeavor. Practical experience is still relatively limited, and many of the results discussed at this event were obtained through simulation or, in a few cases, from reduced practical experience. The importance, though, lies in the fact that many countries are pouring extensive resources into the attempt to control difficult processes by using AI techniques. The wide cross section of interest was demonstrated by the fact that many diverse industries were represented at the workshop—ranging from power-systems control to telecommunications, and into the steel industry.
