These Symposia, which are part of a continuing series sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corp. and the Packard Instrument Company, Inc., are devoted to the entire isotope tracer field: preparation and analysis of labeled compounds, applications in the chemical, biochemical, and clinical fields, and health physics considerations associated with tracer work. The papers in this volume reflect certain trends which can be noted in the tracer field: increasing reliance on biochemical methods for labeling esoteric compounds, growing awareness of the problems of radiation decomposition, the use of advanced instrumentation for the analysis and detection of radioactive substrates, and the rapidly growing application of tracer compounds to clinical diagnosis. The three Symposia at which the papers were presented were held on the following dates: DATE LOCATION CHAIRMAN 11/16/62 New York City Daniel Steinberg, Chief Laboratory of Ce1lular PhYSiology and Metabolism, National Heart Institute, Bethesda, Maryland 3/8/63 Los Angeles Martin Kamen University of California San Diego, California 11/8/63 Chicago Joseph L. Rabinowitz Veterans Administration Hospital Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Once again, it is the editor's pleasure to acknowledge the help of his colleagues in planning and running the various Symposia, as well as the excellent cooperation of the chairmen, who acquitted themselves in their appointed tasks in a most efficient manner, With humor and understanding. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking guide dedicated exclusively to the MCRT method in radiation heat transfer and applied optics The Monte Carlo Ray-Trace Method in Radiation Heat Transfer and Applied Optics offers the most modern and up-to-date approach to radiation heat transfer modelling and performance evaluation of optical instruments. The Monte Carlo ray-trace (MCRT) method is based on the statistically predictable behavior of entities, called rays, which describe the paths followed by energy bundles as they are emitted, reflected, scattered, refracted, diffracted and ultimately absorbed. The author – a noted expert on the subject – covers a wide variety of topics including the mathematics and statistics of ray tracing, the physics of thermal radiation, basic principles of geometrical and physical optics, radiant heat exchange among surfaces and within participating media, and the statistical evaluation of uncertainty of results obtained using the method. The book is a guide to help formulate and solve models that accurately describe the distribution of radiant energy in thermal and optical systems of practical engineering interest. This important guide: Combines radiation heat transfer and applied optics into a single discipline Covers the MCRT method, which has emerged as the dominant tool for radiation heat transfer modelling Helps readers to formulate and solve models that describe the distribution of radiant energy Features pages of color images and a wealth of line drawings Written for faculty and graduate students in mechanical and aerospace engineering and applied optics professionals, The Monte Carlo Ray-Trace Method in Radiation Heat Transfer and Applied Optics is the first book dedicated exclusively to the MCRT method.

The sym posium, which was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation, commemorated the tenth anniversary of the Corporation. The Symposia on Advances in Tracer Methodology, which have been held regularly since 1957, bring together research workers in a variety of disciplines who share an interest in radioactive tracers. The four volumes, this one representing the record of the Eleventh Symposium, provide a compact and readily available source of information-much of which was usually scattered throughout the scientific literature-of inter est to biochemists, pharmacologists, endocrinologists, and analysts for whom tracers have become an indispensable tool. The editor is especially grateful to Dr. Konrad Bloch, Harvard University, and Dr. Waldo E. Cohn, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for chairing the sessions at the Eleventh Sym posium. The cooperation of the speakers is deeply appreCiated. In addition, a special bouquet to my secretary, Mrs. Edith Thompson, for her generous assistance in arranging the various symposia and the publication of the papers. S. R.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive tracers have had a profound impact on scientific research during the past twenty years, particularly in bio chemistry and allied fields. The rapid evolution of sophisticated instrumentation and labeling techniques during the past ten years has made possible on a routine basis exquisitly sensitive experiments which with other techniques would require her culean efforts on the part of the investigator. The Symposia on Advances in Tracer Methodology, which have been held regularly since 1957, provide for research workers in biochemistry, pharmacology, endocrinology, and medicine a focus on the numerous developments in the tracer field that are usually scattered throughout the scientific literature. Volume 3 is arecord of the proceedings of the Ninth and Tenth Symposia, which were sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and the Packard Instrument Company, Inc. Recent advances in tracer methodology, as reflected by the papers in this volume, have been mainly concerned with im proved analytical techniques, such as liquid scintillation count ing, autoradiography, and chromatography, and with novel ap plications of labeled compounds in biochemical and clinical problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five Symposia on Advances in Tracer Methodology were held annually from 1957 to 1961. The symposia were directed to scientists who are active in utilizing tracer techniques to help solve their scientific problems. The format, an informal one-day meeting consisting of about ten papers and closing with a cocktail hour, fostered an active exchange of information among speakers and audience. Although the first two symposia were restricted to the use of tritium as a tracer isotope, the larger purpose of the meetings was to disseminate information relating to the entire isotopic tracer field. The sponsoring organizations, all actively engaged in selling products in the nuclear field, attempted to provide a noncom mercialized forum which would facilitate this exchange of in formation. The collection of papers presented herein represents most of the talks presented at the first symposia plus several appropriate papers which have appeared either in Atomlight, the bulletin of the New England Nuclear Corp., or which have been submitted directly for inclusion in this collection. Although each of the authors was given the opportunity to revise his paper, it is likely that some of the techniques or instrumentation described may already have been outmoded by recent improvements.

Book excerpt: Tracer Methods for In Vivo Kinetics: Theory and Applications summarizes and evaluates the variety of working formulas in applying tracer methods for kinetic studies in vivo. This book discusses the basic concepts, derives the important equations, and evaluates each working formula to ensure its proper application within the set of experimental conditions available. Organized into 12 chapters, this book starts with an overview of tracers such as radioactive atoms. This text then discusses the errors inherent in treating a two-pool system as though it were one pool. Other chapters describe how, from curves of tracer content of the labeled pool or of the secondary pool, a definitive evaluation is made of rate constants and rate of interflow and outflow in the two-pool open system. This book discusses as well the limited usefulness of a curve of specific gravity when information is limited to such a curve obtained from the secondary pool. This book is intended for mathematicians, biomedical scientists, and graduate students.

Taking a unique approach by providing the reader with a systematic and state of the art description of natural and artificial tracers, the book also covers key analytical techniques and applications, and modern tracer methods in the context of systematic hydrology. Tracers have become a primary tool for process investigation, qualitative and quantitative system analysis and integrated resource management. This book will outline the fundamentals of the subject, and examine the latest research findings, clearly showing the entire process of tracer application through the inclusion of numerous integrated case studies. As many techniques derive from different scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics), the effort of compilation and integration into modern hydrology and environmental science research and application requires substantial continuity and experience, which certifies this group of authors. This book will be an invaluable reference not only for students and researchers within the field of Hydrology and Hydrogeology but also for engineers and other tracer techniques applying users.
