Download or read book Energy and Climate in the Urban Built Environment written by M. Santamouris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the number and percentage of people living in urban areas is growing rapidly. Up to half of the world's population is expected to be living in a city by the end of the century and there are over 170 cities in the world with populations over a million. Cities have a huge impact on the local climate and require vast quantities of energy to keep them functioning. The urban environment in turn has a big impact on the performance and needs of buildings. The size, scale and mechanism of these interactions is poorly understood and strategies to mitigate them are rarely implemented. This is the first comprehensive book to address these questions. It arises out of a programme of work (POLISTUDIES) carried out for the Save programme of the European Commission. Chapters describe not only the main problems encountered such as the heat island and canyon effects, but also a range of design solutions that can be adopted both to improve the energy performance and indoor air quality of individual buildings and to look at aspects of urban design that can reduce these climatic effects. The book concludes with some examples of innovative urban bioclimatic buildings. The project was co-ordinated by Professor Mat Santamouris from the University of Athens who is also the editor of the book. Other contributions are from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, ENTPE, Lyons, France and the University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on the research experience and outcomes of a group of international contributors, addresses a range of advanced energy efficiency technologies and their applications in solar heating, cooling and power generation, while also providing solutions for tackling recurring low efficiency problems in today’s systems. It highlights the latest technologies and methods, which can significantly improve the performance of solar systems, enabling readers to design, construct and apply high-performance solar systems in or for their own projects. The contributors provide a systematic introduction to state-of-the-art energy efficiency technologies that demonstrates how to implement innovative solar systems. These technologies include: • heat pipes and loop heat pipes; • phase change materials (PCMs) and PCM slurries; • micro-channel panels; • desiccant/adsorption cycling; • ejector cooling and heat pumps; and • solar concentration and thermoelectric units. The book shows how innovative solar systems applicable to rural and urban buildings can be analysed and demonstrates the successful implementation of these advanced technologies. It delivers the design principles and associated energy performance assessment methods for a range of selected solar heating, cooling and power generation projects. This book offers a valuable source of information for final-year undergraduate students, as well as graduate students and academic lecturers, as it promotes the widespread deployment of advanced solar heating, cooling and power generation technologies applicable for buildings across the globe. The book is also a good point of reference for design engineers and energy consultants who wish to extend their knowledge of advanced technologies used to achieve energy efficiency.

Book excerpt: It was with a great insight when Stephen Hawking uttered, "Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change." Incidentally, this also paraphrases Albert Einstein's saying, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change." Adaptive Engineering: A Sustainable Development Endeavor aims at complementing sustainable development and technologies with adaptation. This entails engineering innovations that go hand in hand with responsible human behavior change. The book presents various aspects of adaptive engineering in combination with civil and structural engineering, architecture, urban design and infrastructure, as well as environmental engineering, coastal engineering, climate change, ecology, energy management, and much more. It commences with a comprehensive review of the state of the art of adaptive engineering. It then elucidates multiple engineering fronts that have proven to be robust and versatile, paving the way to a resilient, green tomorrow. The contributions from a diverse group of experts present a balanced reference compendium to keep professional engineers, students and researchers, policy makers, and various industry stakeholders abreast with the latest advancements. - Focuses on means of engineering effective adaptation for a better tomorrow - Covers engineering innovation advances which may help shape future policies contributing to sustainable development - Illustrates pragmatic solutions which are not only impactful from an environmental standpoint, but also recognize the need for socially sustainable engineering
