Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Management: A History and Criticism IN preparing a new edition of this book, the original text has been largely extended and revised. Every state ment has as far as possible been brought down to the present date; and the more important developments of the past two and a half years have been taken up, each in its appropriate place. In a number of cases the conclu sions themselves have been rewritten. The author has made every effort to correct errors both of fact and judgment, and wishes here to express his warm appreciation to certain among the men best acquainted with the development of scientific manage ment for the unstinted aid which they have given him in this task. Several went through the entire book very carefully, and practically all whose connection with the scientific management movement is discussed herein have given their criticism on the pertinent sections. No other person, however, has any responsibility whatsoever for the statements as they now stand. In each case I have tried simply to record my own impres sions, as clearly as possible, and without hesitating because of any feeling of friendship or hostility which I might have acquired towards men or institutions. This was an easy matter in the preparation of the first edi tion, for my acquaintance with the personalities involved was as yet brief and impersonal.
