Book excerpt: Applied Business Statistics for Business and Management using Microsoft Excel is the first book to illustrate the capabilities of Microsoft Excel to teach applied statistics effectively. It is a step-by-step exercise-driven guide for students and practitioners who need to master Excel to solve practical statistical problems in industry. If understanding statistics isn’t your strongest suit, you are not especially mathematically-inclined, or if you are wary of computers, this is the right book for you. Excel, a widely available computer program for students and managers, is also an effective teaching and learning tool for quantitative analyses in statistics courses. Its powerful computational ability and graphical functions make learning statistics much easier than in years past. However, Applied Business Statistics for Business and Management capitalizes on these improvements by teaching students and practitioners how to apply Excel to statistical techniques necessary in their courses and workplace. Each chapter explains statistical formulas and directs the reader to use Excel commands to solve specific, easy-to-understand business problems. Practice problems are provided at the end of each chapter with their solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Inferential Statistics, fourth edition is appropriate for a one semester first course in Applied Statistics or as a reference book for practicing researchers in a wide variety of disciplines, including medicine, natural and social sciences, law, and engineering. Most importantly, this practical book thoroughly describes the Bayesian principles necessary for applied clinical research and strategic interaction, which are frequently omitted in other texts. After a comprehensive treatment of probability theory concepts, theorems, and some basic proofs, this laconically written text illustrates sampling distributions and their importance in estimation for the purpose of statistical inference. The book then shifts its focus to the essentials associated with confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing for major population parameters, namely, the population mean, population variance, and population proportion. In addition, it thoroughly describes the basics of correlation and simple linear regression as well as non-parametric statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Linear Statistical Models 5e is the long established leading authoritative text and reference on statistical modeling. For students in most any discipline where statistical analysis or interpretation is used, ALSM serves as the standard work. The text includes brief introductory and review material, and then proceeds through regression and modeling for the first half, and through ANOVA and Experimental Design in the second half. All topics are presented in a precise and clear style supported with solved examples, numbered formulae, graphic illustrations, and "Notes" to provide depth and statistical accuracy and precision. Applications used within the text and the hallmark problems, exercises, and projects are drawn from virtually all disciplines and fields providing motivation for students in virtually any college. The Fifth edition provides an increased use of computing and graphical analysis throughout, without sacrificing concepts or rigor. In general, the 5e uses larger data sets in examples and exercises, and where methods can be automated within software without loss of understanding, it is so done.

Book excerpt: In clinical medicine appropriate statistics has become indispensable to evaluate treatment effects. Randomized controlled trials are currently the only trials that truly provide evidence-based medicine. Evidence based medicine has become crucial to optimal treatment of patients. We can define randomized controlled trials by using Christopher J. Bulpitt’s definition “a carefully and ethically designed experiment which includes the provision of adequate and appropriate controls by a process of randomization, so that precisely framed questions can be answered”. The answers given by randomized controlled trials constitute at present the way how patients should be clinically managed. In the setup of such randomized trial one of the most important issues is the statistical basis. The randomized trial will never work when the statistical grounds and analyses have not been clearly defined beforehand. All endpoints should be clearly defined in order to perform appropriate power calculations. Based on these power calculations the exact number of available patients can be calculated in order to have a sufficient quantity of individuals to have the predefined questions answered. Therefore, every clinical physician should be capable to understand the statistical basis of well performed clinical trials. It is therefore a great pleasure that Drs. T. J. Cleophas, A. H. Zwinderman, and T. F. Cleophas have published a book on statistical analysis of clinical trials. The book entitled “Statistics Applied to Clinical Trials” is clearly written and makes complex issues in statistical analysis transparant.

Book excerpt: Applied Statistics in Business and Economics, 7th edition, provides real meaning to the use of statistics in the real world by using real business situations and real data while appealing to students who want to know the why rather than just the how. The text emphasizes thinking about data, choosing appropriate analytic tools, using computers effectively, and recognizing the limitations of statistics. It motivates student learning through applied current exercises and cases that provide real-world relevance and includes analytics in action, careers, and applications of big data, Artificial Intelligence, and machine learning (including ethical issues). The Doane and Seward authors work as a team, integrating the digital and eBook assets seamlessly. In recognition of a growing interest in analytics training beyond Excel, the textbook now provides an optional introduction to R with illustrations of topics in each chapter. Support for R is further enhanced with Learning Stats modules, tables of R functions, and R-compatible Excel data sets.
