Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO-NSF Advanced Stucy Institute on Optimization of Distributed Parameter Structures (Iowa City, Iowa 21 May - 4 June, 1980). The institute was organized by E. Haug and J. Cea, with the enthusiastic help of leading contributors to the field of distributed parameter structural optimization. The principle con tributor to this field during the past two decades, Professor William Prager, participated in planning for the Institute and helped to establish its technical direction. His death just prior to the Institute is a deep loss to the community of engineers and mathematicians in the field, to which he made pioneering contri butions. The proceedings are organized into seven parts, each address ing important problems and special considerations involving classes of structural optimization problems. The review paper presented first in the proceedings surveys contributions to the field, primarily during the decade 1970-1980. Part I of the pro ceedings addresses optimality criteria methods for analyzing and solving problems of distributed parameter structural optimization. Optimality criteria obtained using variational methods of mech anics, calculus of variation, optimal control theory, and abstract optimization theory are presented for numerous classes of struct ures; including beams, columns, plates, grids, shells, and arches.

Book excerpt: This book represents an extended and substantially revised version of my earlierbook, Optimal Control in Problems ofMathematical Physics, originally published in Russian in 1975. About 60% of the text has been completely revised and major additions have been included which have produced a practically new text. My aim was to modernize the presentation but also to preserve the original results, some of which are little known to a Western reader. The idea of composites, which is the core of the modern theory of optimization, was initiated in the early seventies. The reader will find here its implementation in the problem of optimal conductivity distribution in an MHD-generatorchannel flow.Sincethen it has emergedinto an extensive theory which is undergoing a continuous development. The book does not pretend to be a textbook, neither does it offer a systematic presentation of the theory. Rather, it reflects a concept which I consider as fundamental in the modern approach to optimization of dis tributed systems. Bibliographical notes, though extensive, do not pretend to be exhaustive as well. My thanks are due to ProfessorJean-Louis Armand and ProfessorWolf Stadler whose friendly assistance in translating and polishing the text was so valuable. I am indebted to Mrs. Kathleen Durand and Mrs. Colleen Lewis for the hard job of typing large portions of the manuscript.

The book offers simple and clear exposition of main results in this area. The methods proposed by the author cover cases where the controlled system corresponds to well-posed or ill-posed boundary value problems, which can be linear or nonlinear. The uniqueness problem for the solution of nonlinear optimal control problems is analysed in various settings. Solutions of several previously unsolved problems are given. In addition, general methods are applied to the study of two problems connected with optimal control of fluid flows described by the Navier-Stokes equations.

Book excerpt: Control of Distributed Parameter Systems covers the proceedings of the Second IFAC Symposium, Coventry, held in Great Britain from June 28 to July 1, 1977. The book focuses on the methodologies, processes, and techniques in the control of distributed parameter systems, including boundary value control, digital transfer matrix, and differential equations. The selection first discusses the asymptotic methods in the optimal control of distributed systems; applications of distributed parameter control theory of a survey; and dual variational inequalities for external eigenvalue problems. The book also ponders on stochastic differential equations in Hilbert space and their application to delay systems and linear quadratic optimal control problem over an infinite time horizon for a class of distributed parameter systems. The manuscript investigates the semigroup approach to boundary value control and stability of nonlinear distributed parameter systems. Topics include boundary control action implemented through a dynamical system; classical boundary value controls; stability of nonlinear systems; and feedback control on the boundary. The text also focuses on the functional analysis interpretation of Lyapunov stability; method of multipliers for a class distributed parameter systems; and digital transfer matrix approach to distributed system simulation. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the control of distributed parameter systems.

Book excerpt: In this unified account of the mathematical theory of distributed parameter systems (DPS), the authors cover all major aspects of the control, estimation, and identification of such systems, and their application in engineering problems. The first part of the book is devoted to the basic results in deterministic and stochastic partial differential equations, which are applied to the optimal control and estimation theories for DPS. Part two then applies this knowledge in an engineering setting, discussing optimal estimators, optimal sensor and actuator locations, and computational techniques.

Book excerpt: At present, in order to resolve problems of ecology and to save mineral resources for future population generations, it is quite necessary to know how to maintain nature arrangement in an efficient way. It is possible to achieve a rational nature arrangement when analyzing solutions to problems concerned with optimal control of distributed systems and with optimization of modes in which main ground medium processes are functioning (motion of liquids, generation of temperature fields, mechanical deformation of multicomponent media). Such analysis becomes even more difficult because of heterogeneity of the region that is closest to the Earth surface, and thin inclusions/cracks in it exert their essential influence onto a state and development of the mentioned processes, especially in the cases of mining. Many researchers, for instance, A.N. Tikhonov - A.A. Samarsky [121], L. Luckner - W.M. Shestakow [65], Tien-Mo Shih, K.L. Johnson [47], E. Sanchez-Palencia [94] and others stress that it is necessary to consider how thin inclusions/cracks exert their influences onto development of these processes, while such inclusions differ in characteristics from main media to a considerable extent (moisture permeability, permeability to heat, bulk density or shear strength may be mentioned). Xll An influence exerted from thin interlayers onto examined processes is taken into account sufficiently adequately by means of various constraints, namely, by the conjugation conditions [4, 8, 10, 15, 17-20, 22-26, 38, 44, 47, 52, 53, 68, 76, 77, 81, 83, 84, 90, 95, 96-100, 112-114, 117, 123].

Book excerpt: Research in control and estimation of distributed parameter systems encompasses a wide range of applications including both fundamental science and emerging technologies. The latter include smart materials (piezoceramics, shape memory alloys, magnetostrictives, electrorheological fluids) fabrication and testing, design of high-pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactors for production of microelectronic surfaces (e.g., semiconductors), while the former include groundwater contamination cleanup and other environmental modeling questions, climatology, flow control, and fluid-structure interactions as well as more traditional topics in biology, mechanics, and acoustics. These expository papers provide substantial stimulus to both young researchers and experienced investigators in control theory. Includes a comprehensive and lucid presentation that relates frequency domain techniques to state-space or time domain approaches for infinite-dimensional systems including design of robust stabilizing and finite-dimensional controllers for infinite-dimensional systems. It focuses on these two approaches to control design in an integrated system theoretic framework. This is excellent reading for researchers in both the frequency domain and time domain control communities. In other articles, topics considered include pointwise control of distributed parameter systems, bounded and unbounded sensors and actuators, stabilization issues for large flexible structures, and an overview discussion of damping models for flexible structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural optimization, a broad interdisciplinary field, requires skillful combining of mathematical and mechanical knowledge with engineering. It is both intellectually attractive and technologically rewarding. The Symposium on Optimization in Structural Design was the second IUTAM Symposium in Poland. Fifteen years have elapsed since the Symposium on Nonhomogeneity in Elasticity and Plasticity, presided by Professor Olszak, was held in Warsaw. These fifteen years mean a lot for mechanics in Poland. Continuing the tradition of Professor Maksymilian Tytus Huber's research, considerable development of the mechanical sciences has been achieved in this country mostly due to the knowledge, vision and persistence of Professors Wit old Nowacki and Waclaw Olszak, eminent Members of our Academy. The Institute of Fundamental Technological Research was established, competent research groups grew, matured and contri buted to thermo-elasticity, plasticity, general theory of constitutive equations, and to structural mechanics-just to mention a few do mains. Mechanics is now penetrating into the technology of this country at an accelerating pace. The optimization in mechanics has a tradition in Poland. In 1936 Professor Zbigniew Wasiutynski formulated the optimality criterion for mean stiffness design using an elastic energy concept. Further work in this field has been done since, mostly in the last ten years. On behalf of the Committee for Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences I wish to thank the IUTA1V[ Bureau for the decision to hold in Warsaw the Symposium the present volume contains the contribu tions to.

Book excerpt: Control Theory of Systems Governed by Partial Differential Equations covers the proceedings of the 1976 Conference by the same title, held at the Naval Surface Weapons Center, Silver Spring, Maryland. The purpose of this conference is to examine the control theory of partial differential equations and its application. This text is divided into five chapters that primarily focus on tutorial lecture series on the theory of optimal control of distributed systems. It describes the many manifestations of the theory and its applications appearing in the other chapters. This work also presents the principles of the duality and asymptotic methods in control theory, including the variational principle for the heat equation. A chapter highlights systems that are not of the linear quadratic type. This chapter also explores the control of free surfaces and the geometrical control variables. The last chapter provides a summary of the features and applications of the numerical approximation of problems of optimal control. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, engineers, and researchers.
