Book Synopsis Continuous Symmetry Measures, II: Symmetry Groups and the Tetrahedron by : Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dept. of Computer Science
Download or read book Continuous Symmetry Measures, II: Symmetry Groups and the Tetrahedron written by Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dept. of Computer Science and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We treat symmetry as a continuous property rather than a discrete 'yes or no' one. Here we generalize the approach developed for symmetry elements (Part I, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 114, 7844-7851 (1992)) to any symmetry group in two and three dimensions. Using the Continuous Symmetry Measure (CSM) method, it is possible to evaluate quantitatively how much of any symmetry exists in a non-symmetric configuration; what is the nearest symmetry-group of any given configuration; and how the symmetrized shapes, with respect to any symmetry-group, look like. The CSM approach is first presented in a practical easy-to-implement set of rules, which are later proven in a rigorous mathematical layout. Most of our examples concentrate on tetrahedral structures because of their key importance in chemistry. Thus, we show how to evaluate the amount of tetrahedricity (T[subscript d]) existing in non-symmetric tetrahedra; the amount of other symmetries they contain; and the continuous symmetry changes in fluctuating, vibrating and rotating tetrahedra. The tool we developed bears on any physical or chemical process and property which is either governed by symmetry considerations or which is describable in terms of changes in symmetry."
Book Synopsis Chemical Applications of Symmetry and Group Theory by : Rakshit Ameta
Download or read book Chemical Applications of Symmetry and Group Theory written by Rakshit Ameta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the structure and behavior of molecules and crystals depend on their different symmetries, group theory becomes an essential tool in many important areas of chemistry. It is a quite powerful theoretical tool to predict many basic as well as some characteristic properties of molecules. Whereas quantum mechanics provide solutions of some chemical problems on the basis of complicated mathematics, group theory puts forward these solutions in a very simplified and fascinating manner. Group theory has been successfully applied to many chemical problems. Students and teachers of chemical sciences have an invisible fear from this subject due to the difficulty with the mathematical jugglery. An active sixth dimension is required to understand the concept as well as to apply it to solve the problems of chemistry. This book avoids mathematical complications and presents group theory so that it is accessible to students as well as faculty and researchers. Chemical Applications of Symmetry and Group Theory discusses different applications to chemical problems with suitable examples. The book develops the concept of symmetry and group theory, representation of group, its applications to I.R. and Raman spectroscopy, U.V spectroscopy, bonding theories like molecular orbital theory, ligand field theory, hybridization, and more. Figures are included so that reader can visualize the symmetry, symmetry elements, and operations.

Book Synopsis Fuzzy Logic and Mathematics by : Radim Belohlavek
Download or read book Fuzzy Logic and Mathematics written by Radim Belohlavek and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "fuzzy logic," as it is understood in this book, stands for all aspects of representing and manipulating knowledge based on the rejection of the most fundamental principle of classical logic---the principle of bivalence. According to this principle, each declarative sentence is required to be either true or false. In fuzzy logic, these classical truth values are not abandoned. However, additional, intermediate truth values between true and false are allowed, which are interpreted as degrees of truth. This opens a new way of thinking---thinking in terms of degrees rather than absolutes. For example, it leads to the definition of a new kind of sets, referred to as fuzzy sets, in which membership is a matter of degree. The book examines the genesis and development of fuzzy logic. It surveys the prehistory of fuzzy logic and inspects circumstances that eventually lead to the emergence of fuzzy logic. The book explores in detail the development of propositional, predicate, and other calculi that admit degrees of truth, which are known as fuzzy logic in the narrow sense. Fuzzy logic in the broad sense, whose primary aim is to utilize degrees of truth for emulating common-sense human reasoning in natural language, is scrutinized as well. The book also examines principles for developing mathematics based on fuzzy logic and provides overviews of areas in which this has been done most effectively. It also presents a detailed survey of established and prospective applications of fuzzy logic in various areas of human affairs, and provides an assessment of the significance of fuzzy logic as a new paradigm.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Molecular Descriptors by : Roberto Todeschini
Download or read book Handbook of Molecular Descriptors written by Roberto Todeschini and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative studies on structure-activity and structure-property relationships are powerful tools in directed drug research. In recent years, various strategies have been developed to characterize and classify structural patterns by means of molecular descriptors. It has become possible not only to assess diversities or similarities of structure databases, but molecular descriptors also facilitate the identification of potential bioactive molecules from the rapidly increasing number of compound libraries. They even allow for a controlled de-novo design of new lead structures. This is the most comprehensive collection of molecular descriptors and presents a detailed review from the origins of this research field up to present day. This practically oriented reference book gives a thorough overview of the different molecular descriptors representations and their corresponding molecular descriptors. All descriptors are listed with their definition, symbols and labels, formulas, some numerical examples, data and molecular graphs, while numerous figures and tables aid comprehension of the definitions. Cross-references throughout, a list of acronyms and notations allow easy access to the information needed to solve a specific research problem. Examples of descriptor calculations along with tables of descriptor values for a set of selected reference compounds and an up-to-date reference list add to the practical value of the book, making it an invaluable guide for all those dealing with bioactive molecules as well as for researchers.
Book Synopsis Computational Symmetry in Computer Vision and Computer Graphics by : Yanxi Liu
Download or read book Computational Symmetry in Computer Vision and Computer Graphics written by Yanxi Liu and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2010 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the arts and sciences, as well as in our daily lives, symmetry has made a profound and lasting impact. Likewise, a computational treatment of symmetry and group theory (the ultimate mathematical formalization of symmetry) has the potential to play an important role in computational sciences. Though the term Computational Symmetry was formally defined a decade ago by the first author, referring to algorithmic treatment of symmetries, seeking symmetry from digital data has been attempted for over four decades. Computational symmetry on real world data turns out to be challenging enough that, after decades of effort, a fully automated symmetry-savvy system remains elusive for real world applications. The recent resurging interests in computational symmetry for computer vision and computer graphics applications have shown promising results. Recognizing the fundamental relevance and potential power that computational symmetry affords, we offer this survey to the computer vision and computer graphics communities. This survey provides a succinct summary of the relevant mathematical theory, a historic perspective of some important symmetry-related ideas, a partial yet timely report on the state of the arts symmetry detection algorithms along with its first quantitative benchmark, a diverse set of real world applications, suggestions for future directions and a comprehensive reference list.
