This treatment includes in particular a direct proof of the three-dimensional Korn inequality in curvilinear coordinates. The fourth and last chapter, which heavily relies on Chapter 2, begins by a detailed description of the nonlinear and linear equations proposed by W.T. Koiter for modeling thin elastic shells. These equations are “two-dimensional”, in the sense that they are expressed in terms of two curvilinear coordinates used for de?ning the middle surface of the shell. The existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions to the linear Koiter equations is then established, thanks this time to a fundamental “Korn inequality on a surface” and to an “in?nit- imal rigid displacement lemma on a surface”. This chapter also includes a brief introduction to other two-dimensional shell equations. Interestingly, notions that pertain to di?erential geometry per se,suchas covariant derivatives of tensor ?elds, are also introduced in Chapters 3 and 4, where they appear most naturally in the derivation of the basic boundary value problems of three-dimensional elasticity and shell theory. Occasionally, portions of the material covered here are adapted from - cerpts from my book “Mathematical Elasticity, Volume III: Theory of Shells”, published in 2000by North-Holland, Amsterdam; in this respect, I am indebted to Arjen Sevenster for his kind permission to rely on such excerpts. Oth- wise, the bulk of this work was substantially supported by two grants from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China [Project No. 9040869, CityU 100803 and Project No. 9040966, CityU 100604].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago our statistical friends and relations introduced us to the work of Amari and Barndorff-Nielsen on applications of differential geometry to statistics. This book has arisen because we believe that there is a deep relationship between statistics and differential geometry and moreoever that this relationship uses parts of differential geometry, particularly its 'higher-order' aspects not readily accessible to a statistical audience from the existing literature. It is, in part, a long reply to the frequent requests we have had for references on differential geometry! While we have not gone beyond the path-breaking work of Amari and Barndorff- Nielsen in the realm of applications, our book gives some new explanations of their ideas from a first principles point of view as far as geometry is concerned. In particular it seeks to explain why geometry should enter into parametric statistics, and how the theory of asymptotic expansions involves a form of higher-order differential geometry. The first chapter of the book explores exponential families as flat geometries. Indeed the whole notion of using log-likelihoods amounts to exploiting a particular form of flat space known as an affine geometry, in which straight lines and planes make sense, but lengths and angles are absent. We use these geometric ideas to introduce the notion of the second fundamental form of a family whose vanishing characterises precisely the exponential families.

Book excerpt: This textbook is a short comprehensive and intuitive introduction to Lie group analysis of ordinary and partial differential equations. This practical-oriented material contains a large number of examples and problems accompanied by detailed solutions and figures. In comparison with the known beginner guides to Lie group analysis, the book is oriented toward students who are interested in financial mathematics, mathematical finance and economics. We provide the results of the Lie group analysis of actual models in Financial Mathematics using recent publications. These models are usually formulated as nonlinear partial differential equations and are rather difficult to make use of. With the help of Lie group analysis it is possible to describe some important properties of these models and to obtain interesting reductions in a clear and understandable algorithmic way.The book can serve as a short introduction for a further study of modern geometrical analysis applied to models in financial mathematics. It can also be used as textbook in a master's program, in an intensive compact course, or for self study. The textbook with a large number of examples will be useful not only for students who are interested in Financial Mathematics but also for people who are working in other areas of research that are not directly connected with Physics (for instance in such areas of Applied Mathematics like mathematical economy, bio systems, coding theory, etc.).

Book excerpt: The geometrical methods in modem mathematical physics and the developments in Geometry and Global Analysis motivated by physical problems are being intensively worked out in contemporary mathematics. In particular, during the last decades a new branch of Global Analysis, Stochastic Differential Geometry, was formed to meet the needs of Mathematical Physics. It deals with a lot of various second order differential equations on finite and infinite-dimensional manifolds arising in Physics, and its validity is based on the deep inter-relation between modem Differential Geometry and certain parts of the Theory of Stochastic Processes, discovered not so long ago. The foundation of our topic is presented in the contemporary mathematical literature by a lot of publications devoted to certain parts of the above-mentioned themes and connected with the scope of material of this book. There exist some monographs on Stochastic Differential Equations on Manifolds (e. g. [9,36,38,87]) based on the Stratonovich approach. In [7] there is a detailed description of It6 equations on manifolds in Belopolskaya-Dalecky form. Nelson's book [94] deals with Stochastic Mechanics and mean derivatives on Riemannian Manifolds. The books and survey papers on the Lagrange approach to Hydrodynamics [2,31,73,88], etc. , give good presentations of the use of infinite-dimensional ordinary differential geometry in ideal hydrodynamics. We should also refer here to [89,102], to the previous books by the author [53,64], and to many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces differential geometry and cutting-edge findings from the discipline by incorporating both classical approaches and modern discrete differential geometry across all facets and applications, including graphics and imaging, physics and networks. With curvature as the centerpiece, the authors present the development of differential geometry, from curves to surfaces, thence to higher dimensional manifolds; and from smooth structures to metric spaces, weighted manifolds and complexes, and to images, meshes and networks. The first part of the book is a differential geometric study of curves and surfaces in the Euclidean space, enhanced while the second part deals with higher dimensional manifolds centering on curvature by exploring the various ways of extending it to higher dimensional objects and more general structures and how to return to lower dimensional constructs. The third part focuses on computational algorithms in algebraic topology and conformal geometry, applicable for surface parameterization, shape registration and structured mesh generation. The volume will be a useful reference for students of mathematics and computer science, as well as researchers and engineering professionals who are interested in graphics and imaging, complex networks, differential geometry and curvature.
