Presenting current information from leading experts in the field, Volume 4 introduces new information on, for example, applications of Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy in the Far-Infrared Region. The editors place emphasis on surface studies and address advances in Capillary Gas Chromatography - Fourier Transform Interferometry. Volume 4 especially benefits spectroscopists and physicists, as well as researchers in physical, analytical, and surface chemistry. FROM THE PREFACE: Several reasons can be cited for the need to publish Volume 4 in this treatise. First, interest in Fourier transform interferometry (FT-IR) has continued. The number of commercial manufacturers of FT-IR instrumentation has increased, reflecting the increase in demand for such instrumentation. The main thrust in FT-IR instrumentation has focused on applications, and many techniques using FT-IR instrumentation have been generated in order to solve problems heretofore unsolvable. The interest in surfaces relative to catalysts, polymers, and electrical conductors has escalated. Three chapters in Volume 4 are devoted to surfaces. Second, the great acceptance of Volumes 1 through 3 and the demand to continue the treatise have induced us to publish Volume 4. The present volume contains nine chapters, making it the largest of the four volumes. Chapter 1 deals with infrared data processing techniques. Chapter 2 concerns itself with circular dichroism*b1FT-IR. Chapter 3 presents an update on GC*b1FT-IR, a rapidly moving field. Chapter 4 deals with the combination of FT-IR and thermal analysis. Advances in coal analyses using FT-IR are presented in Chapter 5. Reflectance studies are highlighted in Chapters 6, 7, and 8. Chapter 6 deals with structural characterizations made with Langmuir*b1Blodgett monolayers. Also in Chapter 6, the extension of DRIFT into the far-infrared region is shown to be feasible and valuable. Reflection*b1absorption surface studies (FT-IRRAS) are discussed in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 updates us on photoacoustic spectroscopy*b1FT-IR. All of the contributions are made by working experts in these areas. It is the hope that Volume 4 continues in the spirit of the purpose of these volumes, namely, to keep the scientific communities abreast of new developments in FT-IR as applied to chemical systems.

On propose un plan d'implantation de cette technologie au niveau des principales situations analytiques rencontrées dans l'industrie laitière (dosage des composés de produits laitiers en utilisant différentes méthodes d'échantillonnage spectroscopique et contrôle de procédés de fabrication laitière). Ce travail a impliqué la mise en place de nouvelles méthodologies d'acquisition et de traitements de données. On a développé des applications de procédures analytiques multidimensionnelles et on propose des solutions informatiques. On propose alors des applications pour cette méthode instrumentale tout au long de la chaine de transformation du lait, pratiquement de la vache au consommateur. Ce travail consiste en la détermination de l'âge et de la population bactérienne de laits crus, l'analyse qualitative et quantitative de lait liquide, le suivi de cinétique de coagulation enzymatique du lait avec la définition d'un nouveau paramètre rhéologique, l'analyse qualitative et quantitative de fromage frais et le suivi de l'affinage de plusieurs fromages avec la prédiction de leur âge ainsi que leur teneur en azote soluble. Aucun de ces résultats n'a actuellement quitté le laboratoire de R. et D. Toutefois, le travail reporté dans cette thèse pourrait être considéré comme une étude de faisabilité de la méthode et comme une base possible pour de nouveaux travaux de recherche et développement utilisant la spectrométrie IRTF.

Depuis le développement d'algorithmes d'analyse quantitative en mélanges complexes, la spectrométrie moléculaire peut être une de ces techniques. De nombreuses applications sont déjà opérationnelles dans le proche infrarouge tandis qu'en raison de difficultés d'échantillonnage, le moyen infrarouge est encore peu exploité malgré les potentialités offertes par une meilleure spécificité et l'apparition sur le marché de spectromètres IRTF plus robustes et moins coûteux. Nous avons tout d'abord fait le point sur les principaux algorithmes d'analyse quantitative (cls, ils, pcr et pls) utilisés par les logiciels commerciaux en précisant entre autres leurs qualités et leurs défauts. La réflexion diffuse et l'atr horizontal sont parmi les techniques les plus intéressantes pour l'analyse quantitative dans le moyen infrarouge. En modifiant la méthode d'échantillonnage traditionnelle, nous avons amélioré la répétabilité des spectres de réflexion diffuse de façon importante. L'analyse quantitative devient possible. Toutefois les performances sont moins bonnes que pour l'atr qui est à la fois plus précise et plus rapide. Nous discutons de deux exemples de dosage de sucres en atr sur des sirops de glucose et des jus d'oranges. Pour ces mélanges nous avons obtenu une erreur de l'ordre de 5%. Nous mettons également en évidence les difficultés liées à l'interférence de l'eau sur les constituants mineurs, qui sont aggravées par une sensibilité moins élevée en atr qu'en transmission par exemple. En conclusion, l'atr des liquides nous semble être une technique d'analyse rapide tout à fait adaptée à des applications où l'on ne s'intéresse qu'aux constituants majeurs. La réflexion diffuse nous paraît par contre applicable dans une gamme plus restreinte de situations

Book excerpt: Aujourd’hui la détection des COV et autres polluants anthropiques à l’état de trace est un enjeu de plus en plus important pour la surveillance de la qualité de l’air. La spectroscopie infrarouge, permettant de sonder des régions spectrales riches en absorption moléculaire, est une technique appropriée pour une mesure in-situ de la pollution atmosphérique. Ce travail de thèse a ainsi consisté à développer des instruments lasers de mesure multi-polluants de terrain. Un premier projet a consisté à profiter de la disponibilité des lasers des télécommunications émettant dans l’IR proche. Cet instrument a été réalisé sur la base d’une diode laser à cavité étendue (1500-1640 nm), couplée à une cellule à réflexions multiples (100 m). La sensibilité de détection a été optimisée en employant une détection balancée et une procédure de moyenne de spectres. La compacité et la sensibilité obtenues ont permis la quantification de composés, en laboratoire ou in-situ, tel que CO2, CO, C2H2, CH4 et également la détermination du rapport isotopique 13CO2/12CO2 résultant de la combustion de bois. Le deuxième projet a consisté à mélanger deux lasers à fibre du proche IR dans un cristal non linéaire (PPLN) afin de produire un rayonnement laser par génération de différence de fréquences dans l’IR moyen (3,15 –3,43μM), là où les bandes d’absorption des molécules visées, sont les plus intenses. Les premières études avec cette source montrent la possibilité de détection de C2H4 et de C6H6. les développements, caractérisations et applications de ces instruments, aussi bien dans l’IR proche que moyen, sont détaillés et montrent les avantages de sonder les 2 gammes spectrales.
