This book was released on 1982 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new satellite triaxial accelerometer system has been developed. This instrument has been flight-tested on three-axis stabilized satellites and has demonstrated the capability to accurately measure accelerations in the satellite's in-track, cross-track, and radial directions. The in-track data provide direct determination of atmospheric density. These data, obtained during a period of high solar flux, supplement the extensive set of measurements obtained by other accelerometer experiments during low solar flux conditions. The cross-track and radial results permit, for the first time, large-scale measurements of the zonal and, possibly, radial components of neutral atmospheric winds. These simultaneous wind and density data provide an extremely valuable input for the understanding of dynamic processes in the atmosphere and for the improvement of atmospheric models.

This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth's atmosphere is often portrayed as a thin and finite blanket covering our planet, separate from the emptiness of outer space. In reality, the transition is gradual and a tiny fraction of the atmophere gases is still present at the altitude of low orbiting satellites. The very high velocities of these satellites ensure that their orbital motion can still be considerably affected by air density and wind. This influence can be measured using accelerometers and satellite tracking techniques. The opening chapters of this thesis provide an excellent introduction to the various disciplines that are involved in the interpretation of these observations: orbital mechanics, satellite aerodynamics and upper atmospheric physics. A subsequent chapter, at the heart of this work, covers advances in the algorithms used for processing satellite accelerometry and Two-Line Element (TLE) orbit data. The closing chapters provide an elaborate analysis of the resulting density and wind products, which are generating many opportunities for further research, to improve the modelling and understanding of the thermosphere system and its interactions with the lower atmosphere, the ionosphere-magnetosphere system and the Sun.

Book Synopsis Application of Satellite Accelerometer Data to Improve Density Models by : Frank A. Marcos
Download or read book Application of Satellite Accelerometer Data to Improve Density Models written by Frank A. Marcos and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric density measurements obtained by the satellite accelerometer experiment provide data over a wide range of solar and geophysical conditions. These results are used in a preliminary evaluation of several atmospheric models. The model accuracies are compared by their mean values and standard deviations relative to the accelerometer data. Sources of model uncertainties and problems in reducing them are described. Long-term programs involving coordinated measurements, analyses of available data and theoretical studies are required along with development of more accurate indicators of solar and geomagnetic activity before models can show significant improvement. Keywords include: Satellite, Accelerometers, Atmospheric density measurements, Thermospheric model evaluations, Thermospheric density variability.
Book Synopsis Atmospheric Density Results Derived from the SPADES Satellite Accelerometer Data by : Frank A. Marcos
Download or read book Atmospheric Density Results Derived from the SPADES Satellite Accelerometer Data written by Frank A. Marcos and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes density results obtained from the ultrasenstive triaxial accelerometer system flown on the Air Force low-altitude density research satellite OV 1-15 (SPADES). A description of the spacecraft operation, the accelerometers, and the data reduction procedure is also given. The accelerometers measured the satellite deceleration induced by aerodynamic drag. Profiles of the neutral atmospheric density were derived directly from the drag data. Measurements were made from an altitude of 250 km down to perigee, nominally 160 km. Density profiles acquired from 14 July 1968 to 28 September 1968 are presented as Appendix A. Comparison of the density results to the appropriate Jacchia 1971 model atmosphere is given in Appendix B. (Author Modified Abstract).
