Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents novel research ideas and offers insights into radar system design, artificial intelligence and signal processing applications. Further, it proposes a new concept of antenna spatial polarization characteristics (SPC), suggesting that the antenna polarization is a function of the spatial direction and providing new ideas for radar signal processing (RSP) and anti-jamming. It also discusses the design of an advanced signal-processing algorithm, and proposes new polarimetric and anti-jamming methods using antenna inherent properties. The book helps readers discover the potential of radar information processing and improve its anti-interference and target identification ability. It is of interest to university researchers, radar engineers and graduate students in computer science and electronics who wish to learn the core principles, methods, algorithms, and applications of RSP.

Book excerpt: In meticulous detail, a succinct summary of basic electromagnetic wave polarization descriptors, of the various scatterer polarization transformation matrices, and its invariants of the associated optimal matrix polarizations, and of the scatterer descriptive operators is introduced. It is then shown how the five (5) independent matrix parameter for the relative phase mono-static scattering matrix describing an isolated, yet regionally distributed, target in a reciprocal propagation medium can be recovered from (1) amplitude-only, (2) mixed amplitude plus partial phase, (3) complete two-step amplitude-phase measurements. Basic properties of the radar scattering matrix for linear (H, V) and circular (R, L) polarization basis are described in terms of geometrical target features as functions of the specular point surface coordinate parameters, known as gaussian principal, main and related curvature functions. Based upon this succinct background introduction on radar polarimetry, the concepts are applied mainly for the coherent case to various classes of increasing order of sophistication, as defined in detail in the INTRODUCTION, to the problem of radar target handling for the non-cooperative, limited-data case. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of laser detection and ranging (ladar) systems in the atmosphere is limited by the severe attenuation of the signal due to absorption by atmospheric gases and/or scattering by cloud and fog particles. Furthermore, the cloud and fog particles may scatter the transmitted radiation toward the receiver, thus producing a false return, which must be distinguished from the true target return. Described herein is an optical polarization technique for discriminating between a cloud return and a target return. Also presented are the results of a research program which demonstrated the validity of the discrimination technique both in the laboratory and in the field. The conclusion is that the cloud/target discrimination technique will greatly improve the capability of a ladar system to distinguish between an atmospheric cloud and a target.

Book excerpt: The presence of randomly oriented, nonspherical particles in the atmosphere results in the appearance of a depolarized component of the radar signal, that is, the echo signal. When there is sufficient radar sensitivity, this effect can be used to discriminate between the liquid phase (spherical droplets) and the crystalline phase in clouds. To realize certain theoretically observed possibilities, an apparatus was set up on the radar laboratory, which permitted the transmission of both linearly and circularly or elliptically polarized waves. Theoretical analysis and experimental measurements made with this equipment give reason to expect that polarization characteristics can be used to obtain valuable information on the structure and variation of the parameters of meteorological objects.

Book excerpt: The recent launches of three fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) satellites have shown that polarimetric radar imaging can provide abundant data on the Earth’s environment, such as biomass and forest height estimation, snow cover mapping, glacier monitoring, and damage assessment. Written by two of the most recognized leaders in this field, Polarimetric Radar Imaging: From Basics to Applications presents polarimetric radar imaging and processing techniques and shows how to develop remote sensing applications using PolSAR imaging radar. The book provides a substantial and balanced introduction to the basic theory and advanced concepts of polarimetric scattering mechanisms, speckle statistics and speckle filtering, polarimetric information analysis and extraction techniques, and applications typical to radar polarimetric remote sensing. It explains the importance of wave polarization theory and the speckle phenomenon in the information retrieval problem of microwave imaging and inverse scattering. The authors demonstrate how to devise intelligent information extraction algorithms for remote sensing applications. They also describe more advanced polarimetric analysis techniques for polarimetric target decompositions, polarization orientation effects, polarimetric scattering modeling, speckle filtering, terrain and forest classification, manmade target analysis, and PolSAR interferometry. With sample PolSAR data sets and software available for download, this self-contained, hands-on book encourages you to analyze space-borne and airborne PolSAR and polarimetric interferometric SAR (Pol-InSAR) data and then develop applications using this data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report extends and formalizes the concept of using the complex natural resonances of objects as a tool in radar target discrimination. The complex natural resonances which characterize an object are found to be excitation invariant; i.e., the positions of the resonances in the complex frequency plane do not shift as the object is viewed along different incident directions or with different polarizations, which permit a minimum amount of data to be used in object discrimination. Once the dominant (low frequency or long time) natural resonances have been obtained for those objects of interest, a predictor-correlator type of processing can be applied to multi-frequency radar scattering data from an unknown target. It can be established from which of the known objects the scattering most likely originated. This done on the basis of correlations among the scattering and the various sets of natural resonances; the set of natural resonances showing the highest correlation identifies the most probable target.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the synthesis of polarization selection system in the background of passive noise formed by reflections from space-distributed targets. This synthesis is fulfilled as close as possible to its ideal configuration in terms of maximal signal-to-noise ratio for the matched load of radar station antenna system. It presents a new approach to radar system resolution enhancement based on the development of mathematical model for radiometric receivers with mono-pulse antenna systems, as well as creation of a new algorithm that allows increasing angular resolution during the object’s search and tracking due to special signal processing.

Book excerpt: This foreword deals exclusively with the planning, organization, and execution of the Workshop's scientific as well as cultural programs. It is opened with a synopsis on how the global political changes that occurred immediately after the Workshop caused the ~elay in producing the proceedings, followed by a brief exposition on need, timeliness, and importance of this second ARW in the field of electromagnetic imaging, radar remote sensing, and target versus clutter di~rimination; and an outline of the objectives. An informal discussion about some of the organizational details, a retrospective summary of events, and a preview of the third workshop, planned for 1993 September 19-25, is intended to recapture the spirit of this second NATO Advanced Research Workshop (1988 September 18-24), and will reveal how successful it was in compar ison to the first of 1983 September 18-24, how its accomplishments may be appreciated and why a third and last workshop was requested by its participants to take place during 1993 September 19-25.

Book excerpt: This book presents new and advanced concepts, theories and methodologies in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) target scattering mechanism modeling and interpretation, which is dedicated to bridge the gap between the acquired data and practical applications. It proposes adaptive and generalized polarimetric target decompositions, to precisely interpret the target scattering mechanisms. Further, it develops a uniform polarimetric matrix rotation theory and a polarimetric coherence pattern visualization and interpretation tool to completely explore and characterize the deep information and target signatures in the rotation domain. Finally, it demonstrates land cover classification, target detection, natural disaster damage investigation and mapping applications which use the novel scattering mechanism investigation tools. The book is a valuable resource for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students, teachers, engineers and researchers in the field of microwave remote sensing, radar polarimetry, imaging radar, and environmental studies.
