Book Synopsis Biology and Ecology of Sardines and Anchovies by : Konstantinos Ganias
Download or read book Biology and Ecology of Sardines and Anchovies written by Konstantinos Ganias and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from being commercially and socially significant, anchovies and sardines populations occupy crucial positions in the oceansâ ecosystems. Low in the food chain, clupeoids tend towards abundance, as if their purpose in life was to be eaten and fuel the upper levels of marine trophic chains. The present book covers a broad spectrum of topics on the biology (sytematics, phylogeography, reproduction, feeding) and ecology (habitat characterization, recruitment variability) of anchovies and sardines. It also puts together important information on the state of their fisheries, exploitation, and management.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The daily egg production of Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) off California from San Diego to San Francisco was estimated to be 0.96/0.05m2 (CV = 0.24). The spawning biomass was estimated to be 281,639.27 metric tons (mt, CV = 0.3) for an area of 320,619.8 km2, using the daily specific fecundity (number of eggs/population weight (g)/day of 21.86 compared to 23.55 used in the years prior to 2002 and 22.94 from the 2002 cruise). The area (320,620 km2) is similar to that in 2003 (365,906 km2). We also revisited sardine egg data collected during the April 1995 CalCOFI survey. The daily egg production for 1995 was 0.83/0.05m2 (CV = 0.5) for an area of 113,189 km2. Using the daily specific fecundity from 1986-1994: 23.55 eggs/gram/day, the estimate of the spawning biomass in 1995 was 79,997 mt (CV = 0.6). The estimates of spawning biomass of Pacific sardine in 1994 - 2004 are 127,000 mt, 80,000 mt, 83,000 mt, 410,000 mt, 314,000 mt, 282,000 mt, 1.06 million mt, 791,000 mt, 206,000 mt, and 485,000 mt, 300,000 mt respectively. Therefore, the estimates of spawning biomass have been fluctuating and increasing since 1994"--Summary.

Book Synopsis Sampling Rare or Elusive Species by : William Thompson
Download or read book Sampling Rare or Elusive Species written by William Thompson and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information regarding population status and abundance of rare species plays a key role in resource management decisions. Ideally, data should be collected using statistically sound sampling methods, but by their very nature, rare or elusive species pose a difficult sampling challenge. Sampling Rare or Elusive Species describes the latest sampling designs and survey methods for reliably estimating occupancy, abundance, and other population parameters of rare, elusive, or otherwise hard-to-detect plants and animals. It offers a mixture of theory and application, with actual examples from terrestrial, aquatic, and marine habitats around the world. Sampling Rare or Elusive Species is the first volume devoted entirely to this topic and provides natural resource professionals with a suite of innovative approaches to gathering population status and trend data. It represents an invaluable reference for natural resource professionals around the world, including fish and wildlife biologists, ecologists, biometricians, natural resource managers, and all others whose work or research involves rare or elusive species.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fishery independent surveys are critical for assessing and managing Pacific sardine stocks along the North American Pacific coast. These surveys provide relative abundance indices to calibrate stock assessment and to monitor stock productivity as environmental conditions change. The Daily Egg Production method (DEPM) is one of two fishery-independent surveys that are currently used to assess the northern Pacific sardine stock from Ensenada to British Columbia and to set harvest guidelines for annual management in the USA. The DEPM was developed by Lasker (1985) to estimate the spawning stock biomass of northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) based on growth, mortality and abundance of eggs and larvae, and the adult reproductive biology of this species. The method was later applied to assess the spawning of Pacific sardine off California from 1986 to 1996 (Wolf 1988a, Wolf 1988b, Lo et al. 1996, Scannel et al. 1996, Barnes et al. 1997). Since 2004, spawning biomass computed from the DEPM has been integrated in annual stock assessments of Pacific sardine by: 1) calculating the daily egg production from ichthyoplankton survey data; 2) computing the reproductive parameters of females from adult fish samples; and 3) calculating the biomass of spawning adults"--Introduction.
