Book excerpt: Over the past 18 months, a large data set has been developed on an A533B plate material removed from the decommissioned Shoreham nuclear power pressure vessel. The specimens in this data set were tested in the ductile-to-brittle transition regime using the procedures of the new ASTM Standard, Standard Test Method for Determination of Reference Temperature, T0for Ferritic Steels in the Transition Range (E 1921). Results presented earlier [1] showed that crack length ratio has a clear effect on the reference transition temperature, and also that SE(B) and C(T) specimens define clearly different reference temperatures for this material. The observation that the extent of plasticity had little effect on the observed specimen geometry shift led to an investigation of the elastic T-stress as a potential measure of constraint for these results. It was found that T0 did correlate well with the median T-stress [2] obtained from standard equations [3] for the sample geometries used.

Book excerpt: Constraint and statistical models were applied to fracture toughness data in the transition for steels to determine to what extent either or both are required to deal with size and geometry effects in the transition. A Weibull model was used for statistical adjustment to try to remove size effects from the data. The small-scale yield model was used as a constraint adjustment model to try to do the same. Results showed that no single adjustment worked in every case. To remove size effects a Weibull statistical adjustment taken alone worked best. However, statistical adjustment has not been used to remove geometry effects. To insure accurate transferability of fracture toughness data from one geometry to the next a constraint based model is needed. For this the model based on the J-Q two parameter crack tip stress field characterization was used. Fracture toughness measured on a compact specimen was used to predict the fracture toughness of center cracked and double-edge cracked tension geometries. These predictions were compared with actual data. The results showed that the model was able to predict the fracture behavior of the double-edge cracked geometry but was nonconservative for the center-cracked geometry. These results show that both statistical and constraint models are necessary for dealing with transition fracture toughness data.

B, were determined over a wide range of applied constraint. The constraint conditions were varied by changes in specimen geometry and loading mode. Bend specimens with shallow and deep cracks, compact specimens, and single and double edge notched tension specimens were used in this study. A rotation correction was developed for the single edge notch tension specimen which greatly improved the behavior of the J-R curves determined using this specimen. The experimental results were used to investigate the applicability of the Q and T stress parameters to the correlation of upper shelf initiation toughness, JIc, and tearing resistance, Tmat. The J-Q and J-T stress loci, and corresponding plots of material tearing resistance plotted against Q and T, were developed and compared with the expectations of the O'Dowd and Shih and the Betégon and Hancock analyses. The principle conclusions of this work are that JIc does not appear to be dependent on T stress or Q while the material tearing resistance, Tmat, is dependent on T stress and Q, with the tearing modulus increasing as constraint decreases.

Book excerpt: Loss of constraint triaxiality with plastic deformation severely limits the applicability of small specimens to fracture toughness measurement in the ductile-brittle transition region. In earlier work, the authors developed a framework for correcting cleavage fracture toughness data for constraint loss. The present article presents a simple constraint correction equation that increases the measuring capacity of fracture toughness specimens, that is, it is now possible to measure higher valid toughness values with small specimens than was previously possible. At present, the constraint correction can be applied only to the low-to-mid transition region, but ongoing work is aimed at extending the approach to the upper transition region, where cleavage is preceded by stable tearing. Current work is also addressing three-dimensional effects.

Book excerpt: Finite element method was used to analyze the three-point bend experimental data of A533B-1 pressure vessel steel obtained by Sherry, Lidbury, and Beardsmore [1] from -160 to -45 C within the ductile-brittle transition regime. As many researchers have shown, the failure stress ([sigma]{sub f}) of the material could be approximated as a constant. The characteristic length, or the critical distance (r{sub c}) from the crack tip, at which [sigma]{sub f} is reached, is shown to be temperature dependent based on the crack tip stress field calculated by the finite element method. With the J-A2 two-parameter constraint theory in fracture mechanics, the fracture toughness (J{sub C} or K{sub JC}) can be expressed as a function of the constraint level (A2) and the critical distance r{sub c}. This relationship is used to predict the fracture toughness of A533B-1 in the ductile-brittle transition regime with a constant [sigma]{sub f} and a set of temperature-dependent r{sub c}. It can be shown that the prediction agrees well with the test data for wide range of constraint levels from shallow cracks (a/W= 0.075) to deep cracks (a/W= 0.5), where a is the crack length and W is the specimen width.

Book excerpt: The analysis of fracture toughness test data from standard specimens is often based upon the assumptions of planar crack fronts and homogenous material properties. However, these assumptions do not hold true for all test geometries or real components. The overall objective of this EngD was therefore to develop the methodologies used in fracture assessment of steel components, by incorporating a reduction in the conservatisms inherent in the assessment procedures. These conservatisms are associated with applying a 'lower bound' treatment to steel components, which in reality contain significant variability in effective fracture toughness, due to either material considerations (macroscopic or microstructural), or geometrical considerations including the effect of crack tip constraint. The first method developed allows a comparison of a variation of fracture toughness values throughout a component, to a variation of the localised effective crack driving force. The main feature of this method takes advantage of the nature of the ductile-to-brittle transition regime of fracture toughness, where there is significant scatter. This leads to a probabilistic prediction of the location of fracture initiation, and a less conservative estimate of failure load, used to derive enhanced fracture toughness for the component. The second method calculates less conservative fracture toughness values for steels where there is significant heterogeneity in the dataset. The effects of measurement uncertainty on derived fracture toughness values can be monitored to improve probabilistic estimates of the heterogeneous fracture toughness values. These methods have been developed into predictive software tools, validated against data from the literature. Finite element analysis of various configurations of compact tension and bend specimen, under different constraint conditions, was used to identify fracture mechanics parameters and constraint factors that will be of use in deriving accurate fracture toughness relationships from future testing programmes. The viability of low constraint specimens for accurately characterising increases in fracture toughness has been assessed. These recommendations enhance the relationships and advice suggested in the testing standards and literature. Loss of constraint in thin components can be quantified by a triaxiality parameter, which can be used to predict an increase in fracture toughness through use of a damage model, in this case developed based on a ductility exhaustion approach. This model can be used to predict initiation of ductile fracture in configurations with low constraint, leading to less conservative fracture toughness values, enhancing the guidance in the various defect tolerance assessment procedures.

Book excerpt: This study examines the feasibility of predicting the fracture toughness for structurally relevant situations (shallow cracks in thick plates) based on toughness values measured with experimentally convenient specimen geometries (deep cracks in small specimens). The cleavage fracture toughness, Jc, of ASTM A515 Grade 70 steel plate was measured using single edge notch bend specimens. Specimen size and initial crack depth were varied to obtain Jc values over a range of constraint conditions. The results of these experiments indicate that crack depth and thickness cannot be traded off against each other to achieve the same constraint and thereby the same fracture toughness. The absence of this simple trade-off is due to the greater effect of crack depth than of specimen size on Jc and to the scatter in fracture toughness data characteristic of temperatures in the transition range. Alternative techniques for determining structurally relevant toughness measures from specimens based on recently proposed constraint parameters were therefore examined. These various parameters divide into two categories: those which index constraint and those which correct for constraint. Application of these constraint parameters to the A515 data indicate that all of the currently proposed techniques can account for the constraint-induced changes in cleavage fracture toughness. However, the feasibility of applying these techniques during a structural fracture safety assessment depends upon the experimental complexity and cost associated with fracture toughness determination and the ease with which the constraint parameter can be calculated for a structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of fracture toughness in the ductile-brittle transition range was conducted. A large number of ASTM A533, Grade B steel, bend and tension specimens with varying crack lengths were tested throughout the t-ransition region. Cleavage fracture toughness scaling models were utilized to correct the data for the loss of constraint in short crack specimens and tension geometries. The toughness scaling models were effective in reducing the scatter in the data, but tended to overcorrect the results for the short crack bend specimens. A proposed ASTM Test Practice for Fracture Toughness in the Transition Range, which employs a master curve concept, was applied to the results. The proposed master curve over predicted the fracture toughness in the mid-transition and a modified master curve was developed that more accurately modeled the transition behavior of the material. Finally, the modified master curve and the fracture toughness scaling models were combined to predict the as-measured fracture toughness of the short crack bend and the tension specimens. It was shown that when the scaling models over correct the data for loss of constraint, they can also lead to non-conservative estimates of the increase in toughness for low constraint geometries.
