Book excerpt: This LDRD was a Sandia Fellowship that supported Andrea Hsu's PhD research at Texas A & M University and her work as a visitor at Sandia's Combustion Research Facility. The research project at Texas A & M University is concerned with the experimental characterization of hypersonic (Mach>5) flowfields using experimental diagnostics. This effort is part of a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) and is a collaboration between the Chemistry and Aerospace Engineering departments. Hypersonic flight conditions often lead to a non-thermochemical equilibrium (NTE) state of air, where the timescale of reaching a single (equilibrium) Boltzmann temperature is much longer than the timescale of the flow. Certain molecular modes, such as vibrational modes, may be much more excited than the translational or rotational modes of the molecule, leading to thermal-nonequilibrium. A nontrivial amount of energy is therefore contained within the vibrational mode, and this energy cascades into the flow as thermal energy, affecting flow properties through vibrational-vibrational (V-V) and vibrational-translational (V-T) energy exchanges between the flow species. The research is a fundamental experimental study of these NTE systems and involves the application of advanced laser and optical diagnostics towards hypersonic flowfields. The research is broken down into two main categories: the application and adaptation of existing laser and optical techniques towards characterization of NTE, and the development of new molecular tagging velocimetry techniques which have been demonstrated in an underexpanded jet flowfield, but may be extended towards a variety of flowfields. In addition, Andrea's work at Sandia National Labs involved the application of advanced laser diagnostics to flames and turbulent non-reacting jets. These studies included quench-free planar laser-induced fluorescence measurements of nitric oxide (NO) and mixture fraction measurements via Rayleigh scattering.

Book excerpt: The increasing concern about CO2 emissions and energy prices has led to new CO2 emission and fuel economy legislation being introduced in world regions served by the automotive industry. In response, automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers are developing a new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines with ultra-low emissions and high fuel efficiency. To further this development, a better understanding is needed of the combustion and pollutant formation processes in IC engines. As efficiency and emission abatement processes have reached points of diminishing returns, there is more of a need to make measurements inside the combustion chamber, where the combustion and pollutant formation processes take place. However, there is currently no good overview of how to make these measurements. Based on the author’s previous SAE book, Engine Combustion Instrumentation and Diagnostics, this book focuses on laser-based optical techniques for combustion flows and in-cylinder measurements. Included are new chapters on optical engines and optical equipment, case studies, and an updated description of each technique. The purpose of this book is to provide, in one publication, an introduction to experimental techniques that are best suited for in-cylinder engine combustion measurements. It provides sufficient details for readers to set up and apply these techniques to IC engines and combustion flows.

Book excerpt: The main topic of this thesis concerns the development and application of laser diagnostic techniques for accurate temperature measurements and for the determination of flamefront properties in premixed flames that can serve as input data for computational fluid dynamical (CFD) models in technical combustion. The work comprises of a number of related studies, to address problems of relevance in the field of combustion research. The first part of this work involves the development and testing of an improved method for the computation of flamefront curvature in lean premixed turbulent flames. Measurements of spatially resolved heat release rate along the flamefront were then compared with the curvature data and it could be shown that a significant correlation exists between local rate of heat release and flamefront curvature. The results here agree with predictions from CFD models and improve on previous experimental attempts to find a correlation between curvature and heat release. In the second part of this work, the focus was shifted towards the development and application of improved thermometry techniques. One study was on the improvement and application of a coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) setup to an acoustically-forced turbulent lean premixed flame stabilised on a burner, whose design was modelled to mimic phenomena of relevance in industrial combustors. In a related previous study reported in the literature two-line OH planar laser induced fluorescence had been applied to this flame and it was suspected that the results were inaccurate. Using CARS, these inaccuracies could be verified, amounting to discrepancies in temperature of up to 47% compared to the true temperatures. A major effort towards the end of this project was focused on the improvement of traditional thermometry techniques, in order to make them more accurate, faster, and spatially resolved. A technique based on indium two-line atomic fluorescence (TLAF) thermometry was developed and applied, which employed a novel extended cavity diode laser design, and it was shown for the first time that temperature measurements with high accuracy and precision could be performed in low pressure sooting flames without recourse to calibration. Both the high precision and accuracy of the technique allowed for the deduction that the temperature in the flames studied here is relatively insensitive to changes in pressure in stark contrast to the soot volume fraction. Finally, it is shown for the first time that low power diode lasers can be used in combination with indium TLAF to measure spatially and temporally highly resolved temperatures in a quasi-continuous fashion. We demonstrated such measurements at effective rates of 3.5 kHz in a steady laminar test flame yielding an unprecedented precision of 1.5 % at ~2000 K at this measurement rate.

Book excerpt: Advanced laser diagnostics have been developed to study the fundamentals of supersonic flows for scramjet applications. Filtered Rayleigh scattering and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques were developed and applied for measuring temperature and species in reacting and nonreacting flows. Fundamental studies of a cavity flame-holder in reacting and nonreacting supersonic flows were conducted. Several cavity-configuration and fueling schemes were employed, and combustion performance was documented. Raman scattering was utilized to measure the time-averaged equivalence ratio of cavity fueling. OH-PLIF was used to mark the reaction zone of the combustion and aid the optimization of fueling. An isolator of rectangular cross section with adjustable divergence angles has been evaluated for different inlet Mach numbers. Shock structures and fluctuations of shock position were also identified at various Mach numbers, divergence angles, and pressure ratios. The potential application of a plasma torch as an alternative ignition source for the scramjet combustor was also investigated through experimental and CFD studies. Maintenance and upgrade of the test facility and support of testing were performed.

Book excerpt: The study of high-speed flows represents a challenging problem in the fluid dynamics field due to the presence of chemical reactions and non-equilibrium effects. Hypersonic flights, where speeds reach Mach 5 and above, are particularly influenced by these effects, resulting in a direct impact on the flow and consequently on the aerodynamic performance of a vehicle traveling at these speeds. The study of hypersonic flow conditions requires the experimental capability of determining local temperatures, pressures and velocities using non-intrusive techniques. Furthermore, the simultaneous measurement of two or more variables in a complex flow boosts the amount of information that is obtained since valuable correlations can be established. This research includes the design, construction and characterization of a hypersonic flow apparatus explicitly intended as a tool for advanced laser diagnostics development. This apparatus is characterized by its pulsed operation mode that translates into a significant reduction in mass flow rates and can be operated for long periods at Mach numbers ranging from 2.8 to 6.2. The flow conditions during the uniform flow time interval of each pulse vary by less than 1%, generating a flow of sufficient quality for quantitative measurements. The development of a laser diagnostic technique, the VENOM technique, which is a non-intrusive method to provide simultaneous 2-D measurements of the mean and instantaneous fluctuations in two-component velocity and temperature is also presented. This technique represents the first single diagnostic capable of instantaneous two-component velocimetry and thermometry in a gaseous flow field by combining two Nitric Oxide Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence methods: two-component Molecular Tagging Velocimetry and two-line thermometry, employing the nascent NO(v"=1) arising from the NO2 photodissociation as a molecular tracer. The VENOM technique is expected to be not only applicable to cold high-speed flows, which is the focus of the present work, but also to combustion and other reactive or high-enthalpy flow fields.

Book excerpt: Research was conducted to develop advanced laser-based diagnostics for non-intrusive measurements relevant to air-breathing combustion. The program emphasized the use of spectrally-resolved absorption with cw tunable diode lasers (TDL) and the use of planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) with pulsed IR and UV laser sources. Progress during the past year was highlighted by results in five areas including: progress on understanding the photophysics of toluene to enable its use as a PLlF indicator of fuel-air ratio; development and demonstration of new schemes for quantitative LIF of NO at high pressure; observation of the first UV PLIF images of carbon dioxide; fundamental measurements of IR PLIF for species with inaccessible electronic transitions; investigation of 2f wavelength-modulation techniques for temperature measurement in high-pressure and/or high-temperature gas flows, and temperature measurements via optical absorption in the UV and NIR: spectral regions targeting CO2 and H20, respectively.
