Book Synopsis Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases by : Bartlett Jere Whiting
Download or read book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases written by Bartlett Jere Whiting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Book Synopsis That's in the Bible? by : William D. Mayo
Download or read book That's in the Bible? written by William D. Mayo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That's In The Bible? illustrates the significant impact the Bible has had on our everyday conversational language. Throughout history, written and verbal language has been seasoned with hundreds of colorful expressions lifted directly from its pages. This is no less true in our modern language - newspapers unknowingly use catchy phrases as headlines that are actually derived from biblical texts. Advertisers lure customers with limited time offers, such as "Don't Miss the Boat!" - a direct reference to Noah and the Ark. And people use familiar colloquial expressions casually in everyday speech perhaps without even being aware of the fact that they are using an expression originally penned in Scripture. This book explores many such phrases - everyday expressions - voiced from the corporate boardroom to the schoolyard playground. Each phrase is traced to its original biblical roots. The study of word and phrase origins is known as etymology - from the Greek words etymon meaning "true sense" and logos meaning "word". This book presents the "true sense" of the word and promotes Bible discovery, readership, and witnessing. It is intended to illustrate the Bible as a genuinely user-friendly resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one is looking for answers to the meaning of life and how to make a happier, richer existence (e.g., relationships, finances, health), then Nevilles teaching from personal experience, testimonies from students, and his amazing visions paralleling and explaining the mysteries of the Old and New Testament will answer those questions. Learn his techniques, unleash your power to create, believe in your imaginary acts, and no power in this world can stop the desired results from appearing in your world. Its the only creative power, one that everyone is operating moment to moment. Learning how to direct it deliberately is essential to producing loving, positive changes in ones life. These 1963 lectures also begin a nine-year odyssey of discovering the deepest meanings of six visions of the end that had unfolded in Neville (19591963). The visions are the signs that this long journey as limited man; the terrible opacity and contraction is over, that the purpose of human life has been completed; man has endured and overcome six thousand years of amnesia plus the fires of experience and has emerged victorious. Hes been transformed by his inner being (I Am or God) back into the divinity he truly is and always was.
Book Synopsis The Egyptian Revolution of 1919 by : H.A. Hellyer
Download or read book The Egyptian Revolution of 1919 written by H.A. Hellyer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1919 Egyptian revolution was the founding event for modern Egypt's nation state. So far there has been no text that looks at the causes, consequences and legacies of the 1919 Egyptian Revolution. This book addresses that gap, with Egyptian and non-Egyptian scholars discussing a range of topics that link back to that crucial event in Egyptian history. Across nine chapters, the book analyzes the causes and course of the 1919 revolution; its impacts on subsequent political beliefs, practices and institutions; and its continuing legacy as a means of regime legitimation. The chapters reveal that the 1919 Egyptian Revolution divided the British while uniting Egyptians. However, the “revolutionary moment” was superseded by efforts to restore Britain's influence in league with a reassertion of monarchical authority. Those efforts enjoyed tactical, but not long-term strategic success, in part because the 1919 revolution had unleashed nationalist forces that could never again be completely contained. The book covers key issues surrounding the 1919 Egyptian Revolution such as the role played by Lord Allenby; internal schisms within the British government struggling to cope with the revolution; Muslim-Christian relations; and divisions among the Egyptians.
