Book Synopsis Apollo Applications Program Summary Report by : Aeronautics Administration
Download or read book Apollo Applications Program Summary Report written by Aeronautics Administration and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apollo Applications eventually became to be known and flown as America's first space station, Skylab. The actual Skylab was launched "dry" but this document describes plans for a "wet" workshop. Rather than the one Saturn V launch that was needed for Skylab, the "wet" workshop plan called for 3 Saturn IB launches: 1 for the workshop/MDA, 1 for the Apollo CSM, and 1 for the LM-based ATM. Astronauts would take remote control of the ATM and use the LM's thrusters to dock with the station. Flights AAP-1 through AAP-4 are described. This NASA document is dated Feb. 1, 1969, and features rare diagrams and photographs. Note: This report is not vintage. It is a reprint of an original NASA document that was carefully scanned for this publication.

Book excerpt: The structure of Apollo - The Lost and Forgotten Missions follows the development and in flight testing of the Apollo lunar spacecraft prior to Apollo 11 as well as missions planned following that first landing. Drawing upon combinations of archival documentation from the first four manned Apollo missions and future mission plans evolved in the summer of 1969 Apollo - The Lost and Forgotten Missions will fill this void. The text explains how the machines and the men were prepared for the landing on the moon and what would have followed the initial landings.

Book excerpt: This report is a summary of the status, completed in December 1966, of the Apollo lunar landing program prior to the tragic deaths of Astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffee preparing for the first manned Apollo flight. This tragic accident will undoubtedly affect to some extent both the schedule and cost of the Apollo program. However, it does not alter the basic conclusions contained in this report, nor the analysis provided.

Book Synopsis Doing the Impossible by : Arthur L. Slotkin
Download or read book Doing the Impossible written by Arthur L. Slotkin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apollo was known for its engineering triumphs, but its success also came from a disciplined management style. This excellent account of one of the most important personalities in early American human spaceflight history describes for the first time how George E. Mueller, the system manager of the human spaceflight program of the 1960s, applied the SPO methodology and other special considerations such as “all-up”testing, resulting in the success of the Apollo Program. Wernher von Braun and others did not readily accept such testing or Mueller’s approach to system management, but later acknowledged that without them NASA would not have landed astronauts on the Moon by 1969. While Apollo remained Mueller’s priority, from his earliest days at the agency, he promoted a robust post-Apollo Program which resulted in Skylab, the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. As a result of these efforts, Mueller earned the sobriquet: “the father of the space shuttle.” Following his success at NASA, Mueller returned to industry. Although he did not play a leading role in human spaceflight again, in 2011 the National Air and Space Museum awarded him their lifetime achievement trophy for his contributions. Following the contributions of George E. Mueller, in this unique book Arthur L. Slotkin answers such questions as: exactly how did the methods developed for use in the Air Force ballistic missile programs get modified and used in the Apollo Program? How did George E. Mueller, with the help of others, manage the Apollo Program? How did NASA centers, coming from federal agencies with cultures of their own, adapt to the new structured approach imposed from Washington? George E. Mueller is the ideal central character for this book. He was instrumental in the creation of Apollo extension systems leading to Apollo, the Shuttle, and today’s ISS and thus was a pivotal figure in early American human spaceflight history.
Book Synopsis Apollo in the Age of Aquarius by : Neil M. Maher
Download or read book Apollo in the Age of Aquarius written by Neil M. Maher and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In summer 1969, astronauts landed on the moon and hippie hordes descended on Woodstock—two era-defining events that are not entirely coincidental. Neil M. Maher shows how NASA’s celestial aspirations were tethered to terrestrial concerns of the time: the civil rights struggle, the antiwar movement, environmentalism, feminism, and the culture wars.
