Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the "Q materials" in the light of compositional conventions of ancient instructional genres. The author begins by assessing literary-critical approaches to Q which began with Harnack and have culminated in the work of Kloppenborg, Sato, and others. Next he articulates a theory of genre analysis drawn from text-linguistics, literary criticism, and rhetorical criticism. An array of ancient paraenetic texts is used to generate genre-critical models, in turn applied comprehensively to the double tradition materials. The results are used to critically assess recent redaction-history theories of Q's formation and to locate Q more securely among ancient paraenetic genres. The book will be of interest to synoptic gospels scholarship, historians of Christian origins, literary critics, and those investigating the production, social function, and performance of texts in early Christianity.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Proverbs is permeated with patterns of repetition, yet to date no major work on Proverbs has dealt adequately with this phenomenon. Snell catalogs and analyzes repetitive words and verses and uses the data to draw conclusions about the composition of the book. He sees four stages in the composition of the book, with the earliest section dated no later than Hezekiah's reign. This book provides a wealth of information, including indexes of repetitive words and verses and an English translation of J. M. Grintz's major essay on the composition of Proverbs, which has previously been available only in Hebrew. The basic work done here will need to be considered in any future work on the Book of Proverbs and wisdom literature in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To soon old, too late smart. Over the course of my life, I have happened upon sayings that apply to specific situations in our lives. Actually, they relate powerful lessons. Over time, I jotted down many of these real-world insights and also began to compile a list of my personal experiences that I expected to pass along to my children. But I was married for thirteen years then divorced. We were not blessed with children. So I passed these sayings along to pipe fitter apprentices who worked with me, and the lessons were received very well. Now I wish to share them with a larger audience, to the children and grandchildren I never had. To the parents who may read this, I acknowledge that my list refers to many situations that you might already be familiar with, but some of them may have slipped through the cracks in your advice to your children. Who can benefit from reading them? Anyone of any age actually can draw knowledge from thesewhether one is working, playing, or attending the school of hard knocks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who compiled the varied material in the book of Proverbs, and why? Is there any significance in the order in which it has been arranged? These and similar questions about the book have often been discussed in the past, but no agreed conclusions reached. In this study the question of the purpose behind the composition of the book is raised anew. Whybray first discusses each section of Proverbs separately and then enquires into the significance, if any, of the shape of the book as a whole in its final form. Among the chief features of this study are an analysis of redactional layers in chapters 1-9, the comparison of different concepts of wisdom in the book, the question of a theological development in the course of the redactional process and an investigation of the possibility that the numerous short proverbs in chapters 10-29 may have been consciously arranged in meaningful groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the modern classics The Black Swan, Fooled by Randomness, and Antifragile, Nassim Nicholas Taleb expresses major ideas in ways you least expect in this collection of aphorisms and meditations—now expanded with fifty percent more material than the hardcover. The Bed of Procrustes takes its title from the Greek myth of a man who made his visitors fit his bed to perfection, either by stretching them or by cutting their limbs. It represents Taleb’s view of modern civilization’s hubristic side effects—modifying humans to satisfy technology, blaming reality for not fitting economic models, inventing diseases to sell drugs, defining intelligence as what can be tested in a classroom, and convincing people that employment is not slavery. Playful and irreverent, these aphorisms will surprise you by exposing self-delusions you have been living with but never recognized. With a rare combination of pointed wit and potent wisdom, Taleb plows through human illusions, contrasting the classical values of courage, elegance, and erudition with the modern diseases of nerdiness, philistinism, and phonies.

Book excerpt: James reflects both features of Hellenistic paraenesis and wisdom instruction, but its contents owe more to the latter. The work can be seen as a countercultural wisdom instruction containing various aphorisms, aiming to challenge the hearers' worldview and to reorient them to the values acceptable to God. The concern of perfection comes at the prologue and the epilogue, which forms the framework from which James is to be understood. The units 2:8-13, 3:13-18, and 4:11-12, which link the seemingly unrelated adjacent sections together, reflect similar arguments. The perfect law of liberty and the wisdom from above, and ultimately God the Lawgiver and the Judge, are the yardsticks by which one's speech and actions have to be measured and judged (1:19-25). The preeminent concern of our author is the importance of the perfect law with its fulfillment bringing about perfection, freeing one from the power of evil desire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proverbs provide a general truth by using short & carefully crafted sentences. They represent the popular wisdom, the words of the ancestors, and are the spirit of a nation. Proverbs associate with a specific rhyme and rhythmus that provides them a unique tone and meaning, qualities that are tied to a specific language. Proverbs translations do lose some of the traits of the original proverbs, and therefore they qualify as merely aphorisms. Aphorisms that are meant to preserve the general meaning of the proverb, however in the process they lose the cultural connection. The writing also includes some of my favorite philosophical quotes. The quotes were collected during the years and come from my personal reading. Samples from the text:• Life is unpredictable–eat your cake first. • What can you expect from a pig but a grunt?• He, who has nothing else to hold on to, grasps even on a drawn sword. • Better give cherries to a pig than advice to a fool.• A Christian forgives, an idiot forgets.• When it rains soup, the poor man has no spoon.• Adversity makes a man wise, not rich.
