Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Great and terrible was the year of Our Lord 1918, of the Revolution the second." It is 1918: the Russian Revolution has just ended, Ukraine is in the midst of civil war, and in Kiev, the two Turbin brothers are preparing to fight for the White Guard in the wake of their beloved mother's death. Friends charge in from the streets amid an atmosphere of heady chaos, downing vodka, keeling over, taking baths, playing the guitar, falling in love. But the new regime is poised for victory, and in its brutal triumph lies destruction for the Turbins and their world. This novel, Mikhail Bulgakov's literary debut, may in fact have saved the writer, whose works were often censored under the Soviet regime: Stalin was an avid fan of a play based on The White Guard and allegedly went to see it more than fifteen times. Michael Glenny was the first to translate Bulgakov's works into English--this edition makes his deft, brilliant translation once again available for new readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyudmila Noble, the author of the book "Just Touching the Memory" was born in a family of a well-known doctor in the former Soviet Union. From her very childhood she was introduced to the notions of humanism and altruism which were presented to her by her father. Lyudmila Noble's father was her mentor and her role model. In the former Soviet Union Lyudmila received her education as linguist, educator and military nurse. She majored in English/German. Later she got her Master's Degree in Social Work in New York, USA. In her book she invites her potential readers to think, to analyze and to understand about the reasons which made Soviet people to leave their country. As everyone is aware nobody leaves and departs from a good life. On the surface her main character had a great career, house, family, children, husband But that was the tip of the iceberg. The underlying reason for her departure from the former Soviet Union was deep down and deeply hidden from the eyes of the bystanders. In her book she tried to capture the most significant events which led the country to the collapse and made an impact of the destinies of the citizens of that country greatly Being a sensitive author, she wants to say in her book, "My freedom is finishing when your freedom ends". As a matter of fact, in the former USSR the notions "will" and "freedom" were not separated. The authorities did everything what they wanted to do in spite of the fact that they hurt constantly Soviet people the people of values and dignity. The main purpose of this book is that very fact that the author intended to introduce relatively newly arrived Russian-speaking community to the American Society. To break stereotypes about Russians as the rigid people who came from the cold freezing country with similar personalities, instead she shows the real Russians in the US.

Professor Kovalevskaya was already an international celebrity, and partly for the wrong reasons: less as the distinguished mathematician she actually was than as a "mathematical lady"--A bizarre but fascinating phenomenon.* Her book was an immediate success. Ur ryska lifvet. Systrarna Rajevski. Heggstrom, 1889). In the following year the book came out in Russia in two *"My gifted Mathematical Assistant Mr. Hammond exclaimed ... Book excerpt: Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, the highly acclaimed translators of War and Peace, Doctor Zhivago, and Anna Karenina, which was an Oprah Book Club pick and million-copy bestseller, bring their unmatched talents to The Selected Stories of Anton Chekhov, a collection of thirty of Chekhov’s best tales from the major periods of his creative life. Considered the greatest short story writer, Anton Chekhov changed the genre itself with his spare, impressionistic depictions of Russian life and the human condition. From characteristically brief, evocative early pieces such as “The Huntsman” and the tour de force “A Boring Story,” to his best-known stories such as “The Lady with the Little Dog” and his own personal favorite, “The Student,” Chekhov’s short fiction possesses the transcendent power of art to awe and change the reader. This monumental edition, expertly translated, is especially faithful to the meaning of Chekhov’s prose and the unique rhythms of his writing, giving readers an authentic sense of his style and a true understanding of his greatness.

Book excerpt: CO«i»b.H BaCHJIbeBHa lU>BaJIeBcR8JI (Sonja Kovalevsky) was born in Moscow in 1850 and died in Stockholm in 1891. Between these years, in the then changing and turbulent circumstances for Europe, lies the all too brief life of this remarkable woman. This life was lived out within the great European centers of power and learning in Russia, France, Germany, Switzerland, England and Sweden. To this day, now 150 years after her birth, her influence for and contribution to mathe matics, science, literature, women's rights and democratic government are recorded and reviewed, not only in Europe but now in countries far removed in time and distance from the lands of her birth and being. This volume, dedicated to her memory and to her achievements, records the Proceedings of the Marcus Wallenberg Symposium held, in memory of Sonja Kovalevsky, at Stockholm University from 18 to 22 June 2000. The symposium was held at the Department of Mathematics with its excellent library and lecture halls providing favourable working conditions. Within these pages are contained a curriculum vitae for Sonja Kovalevsky, a list of all her scientific publications, together with a copy of the moving and elegant obituary notice written by her friend and protector Gosta Mittag-Leffler. These papers are followed by a leading article entitled Sonja Kovalevsky: Her life and professorship in Stockholm, written especially for this volume by Jan-Erik Bjork in preparation for his major address to the Symposium.
