Book Synopsis Social Media in Trinidad by : Jolynna Sinanan
Download or read book Social Media in Trinidad written by Jolynna Sinanan and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on 15 months of ethnographic research in one of the most under-developed regions in the Caribbean island of Trinidad, this book describes the uses and consequences of social media for its residents. Jolynna Sinanan argues that this semi-urban town is a place in-between: somewhere city dwellers look down on and villagers look up to. The complex identity of the town is expressed through uses of social media, with significant results for understanding social media more generally. Not elevating oneself above others is one of the core values of the town, and social media becomes a tool for social visibility; that is, the process of how social norms come to be and how they are negotiated. Carnival logic and high-impact visuality is pervasive in uses of social media, even if Carnival is not embraced by all Trinidadians in the town and results in presenting oneself and association with different groups in varying ways. The study also has surprising results in how residents are explicitly non-activist and align themselves with everyday values of maintaining good relationships in a small town, rather than espousing more worldly or cosmopolitan values.

Book Synopsis Post Capitulation Trinidad (1797–1947) by : Ivol Blackman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trinidad became a colony of Spain in 1498. In 1797, it was captured by Britain and became a colony of that country. Under British rule, it was categorized as a Crown Colony. As such, it was completely controlled by the British government and the governor who was its representative in the island. The governor was judge ,legislator, and administrator all at once. In that regard, the significance of the Articles of Capitulation, the document evidencing the surrender of the island to British forces, as a bill of rights is considered. The evolution of the law, the judicial system, and the legislature and the consequent replacement of their Spanish counterparts are the bases of the text. But the influence of the economic structure in the colony on the changes that were introduced in the law is described. The change from the one-man rule of the governor to the governor with a Council of Advice, and finally, to a Legislative Council is detailed. Was Spanish law completely terminated in Trinidad? An answer to that question is given in the book.

Book Synopsis Sweet and Sour Trinidad and Tobago by : Johnny Coomansingh
Download or read book Sweet and Sour Trinidad and Tobago written by Johnny Coomansingh and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written primarily for the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Nevertheless, it would be of great interest to the Caribbean Diaspora, and individuals who wish to understand the social, cultural, political, and economic dynamics of a developing Caribbean nation. Partially written in dialect, the text has afforded him a forum to reveal some secret and uncomfortable episodes in his life. His carefree style has allowed ample humor, making the narrative quite entertaining. In his research on the Steelpan, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, he was able to take an unbiased glimpse of the twin-island state and its incomparable sweetness; no mater how twisted, the sugarcane owns its sugar. However, despite the sweetness, many terrible upheavals in the society have caused an unforgivable nasty sourness in the system.
