Book Synopsis The Reinvention of Spain by : Sebastian Balfour
Download or read book The Reinvention of Spain written by Sebastian Balfour and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-10-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unravelling the debate about the Spanish nation and its identity in the new democracy, this book looks at the issue as both a historical debate and a contemporary political problem, particularly complex due to the legacy of the Francoist Dictatorship which deeply eroded the legitimacy of Spanish nationalism. During and since the transition Spanish nationalist discourse has evolved to meet the challenge of new concepts of nation and identity. These formulations argue very different configurations of the relationship between nation and state. While the Constitution of 1978 defines Spain as a nation of nationalities, many politicians and intellectuals now claim that Spain is a nation of nations, others that it is a nation of nations and regions, or a post-traditional nation state, or post-national state. For the peripheral nationalists, it is merely a state of nations and regions. What is at issue is not whether Spain exists or not as a nation; rather, it is the traditional ways of seeing Spain from both the centre and the periphery that are being challenged. The Reinvention of Spain examines the ways in which Spanish and regional identities are projected and how influence the external actions of the Spanish state. It also analyses the dynamic of comparative grievance and competition between regions deriving from the peculiar architecture of the state in Spain, and their effect on social and political cohesion. Finally, it examines scenarios of change that might foster solutions but asserts that Spain will continue to reinvent itself.

Book Synopsis We Will Not be Stopped by : Arthur Bonner
Download or read book We Will Not be Stopped written by Arthur Bonner and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of the Bible to transform lives and societies has seldom been demonstrated more vividly than in Chiapas in southern Mexico. Beginning in the early 1940s, young men and women of the Summer Institute of Linguistics devised written scripts and then translated the Bible into the languages of the most neglected and most oppressed of indigenous peoples: the Tzeltals, Tzotzils, Chols and Tojolabals. A major part of this book is the narrations of indigenous people who experienced the Bible's power to heal bodies and create loving families. They became apostles, seeding new congregations. They refused to accept what they saw as idols made by human hands and rejected the cults of village saints. For this, they were, like the first Christians, persecuted and driven from their lands and homes, yet they never lost faith. They staked their lives on the Bible's promises. One pastor vowed, "We shall not be stopped." As evidence of such faith and determination, evangelical churches are growing stronger and more numerous. Simultaneously, the Catholic Church in Chiapas taught the "option for the poor" of the Theology of Liberation. Marxist revolutionaries from northern Mexico took advantage of this structure, leading to the Zapatista revolt of subcommander Marcos. When the revolt failed, what had been hailed as a "Revolt of the Indians" deteriorated into a deadly political struggle of "Indians against Indians," with defenseless villagers caught in the middle.

Book Synopsis Democratic Spain by : Richard Gillespie
Download or read book Democratic Spain written by Richard Gillespie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the death of General Franco in 1975, Spain has emerged from relative isolation to play an active role in international affairs. Membership of the European Union and Nato have been keys to Spain's new prominence, although the country has also tried to build on its traditional "special relationships" with Latin America and the Arab world. This is the first thorough study of democratic Spain's re-emergence on the international scene. By focusing on the relationship between external relations and domestic policy the book makes an important contribution to the literature on democratisation, as well as showing how Spanish foreign policy evolved between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s. While the book focuses on democratic Spain, its revisionist view of democratic transitions is of more general relevance. Democratization is seen as an integral process involving related, though not simultaneous changes in domestic policy and external relations. Only with the transformation of her external relations did Spain's new democracy finally become consolidated. This book will be required reading for students of Spanish politics and will also be useful to those interested in the process of democratization.

Book Synopsis Nested Identities by : Guntram Henrik Herb
Download or read book Nested Identities written by Guntram Henrik Herb and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1999 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work explores the vital importance of territory and space to any genuine understanding of nationalism and identity. Too often, the contributors argue, national identity is analyzed apart from the lands that are integral to its formation, as territory is seen as a commodity to be brokered rather than as central to a group's self-definition. This volume combines theoretical insights with structured case studies on how national identity manifests itself in space and at different geographical scales.

Book Synopsis The Social Metabolism of Spanish Agriculture, 1900–2008 by : Manuel González de Molina
Download or read book The Social Metabolism of Spanish Agriculture, 1900–2008 written by Manuel González de Molina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a panoramic view of the evolution of Spanish agriculture from 1900 to the present, offering a more diverse picture to the complex and multidimensional reality of agrarian production. With a clear transdisciplinary ambition, the book applies an original and innovative theoretical and methodological tool, termed Agrarian Social Metabolism, combining Social Metabolism with an agroecological perspective. This integrative analysis is especially interesting for environmental scientists and policy makers being the best way to design sustainable agroecosystems and public policies capable of moving us towards a more sustainable food system. Spanish agricultural production has experienced impressive growth during the 20th century which has allowed it to ensure the supply of food to the population and even to transform some crops into important chapters in foreign trade. However, this growth has had its negative side since it was based on the injection of large amounts of external energy, on the destruction of employment and the loss of profitability of agricultural activity. But perhaps the most serious part is the strong impact of the current industrialised agriculture model on Spanish agroecosystems, exposed to the overexploitation of hydric resources, pollution of the water by nitrates and pesticides, high erosion rates and an alarming loss of biodiversity; damage which in the immediate future will end up reducing production capacity.

Book Synopsis Parties And Unions In The New Global Economy by : Katrina Burgess
Download or read book Parties And Unions In The New Global Economy written by Katrina Burgess and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the twentieth century, unions played a vital role in shaping political regimes and economic development strategies, particularly in Latin America and Europe. However, their influence has waned as political parties with close ties to unions have adopted neoliberal reforms harmful to the interests of workers. What do unions do when confronted with this "loyalty dilemma"? Katrina Burgess compares events in three countries to determine the reasons for widely divergent responses on the part of labor leaders to remarkably similar challenges. She argues that the key to understanding why some labor leaders protest and some acquiesce lies essentially in two domains: the relative power of the party and the workers to punish them, and the party's capacity to act autonomously from its own government.
