Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antithesis in the Attic Orators From Antiphon to Isaeus: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, (Department or Greek) The Greeks were the first, so far as we know, to employ antithesis extensively; first to analyze it, and formulate the principles of its usage. Any scientific treatment of the figure must accordingly begin with them. The field of Attic eloquence has been chosen as being the most suitable for the study of the subject. And there is no better standard than antithesis for a comparative study of the rhetorical style of the several orators. Book Synopsis Attic Oratory and Performance by : Andreas Serafim
Download or read book Attic Oratory and Performance written by Andreas Serafim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a society where public speech was integral to the decision-making process, and where all affairs pertaining to the community were the subject of democratic debate, the communication between the speaker and his audience in the public forum, whether the law-court or the Assembly, cannot be separated from the notion of performance. Attic Oratory and Performance seeks to make modern Performance Studies productive for, and so make a significant contribution to, the understanding of Greek oratory. Although quite a lot of ink has been spilt over the performance dimension of oratory, the focus of nearly all of the scholarship in this area has been relatively narrow, understanding performance as only encompassing 'delivery' – the use of gestures and vocal ploys – and the convergences and divergences between oratory and theatre. Serafim seeks to move beyond this relatively narrow focus to offer a holistic perspective on performance and oratory. Using examples from selected forensic speeches, in particular four interconnected speeches by Aeschines (2, 3) and Demosthenes (18, 19), he argues that oratorical performance encompassed subtle communication between the speaker and the audience beyond mere delivery, and that the surviving texts offer numerous glimpses of the performative dimension of these speeches, and their links to contemporary theatre.

Book Synopsis Polarity and Change in 1 Corinthians 15 by : Jeffrey R. Asher
Download or read book Polarity and Change in 1 Corinthians 15 written by Jeffrey R. Asher and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey R. Asher examines the themes of polarity and change in Paul's argument in 1 Corinthians 15:35-57. He demonstrates that Paul uses a didactic method of argumentation to demonstrate to some of the Corinthians that there will be a resurrection of the dead. Given the nature of Paul's argument, it is quite likely that certain members of the Corinthian church denied the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead because they believed that it is impossible for a terrestrial body to be raised to the celestial realm. In addition they considered the two cosmic realms to constitute a polarity. Using a didactic method of accommodation in verses 35-49, Paul demonstrates to these Corinthian intellectuals that the doctrine of the resurrection complies with the polarity that exists between the celestial and terrestrial realms. In verses 50-57, he corrects their false conclusion regarding the resurrection by showing that the body will be changed to conform with the strictures of heavenl y existence.

Download or read book Reading Acts written by William Shiell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Shiell proposes that the book of Acts was performed orally by a lector in the early church following Greco-Roman rhetorical conventions for recitation and delivery rather than directly read by an audience that was minimally literate. Shiell’s study outlines the function of the lector in Greco-Roman times as a filter through which an audience would receive a text. He describes the conventions for performers’ gestures, facial expressions, and vocal inflections found in material from Greco-Roman literature and art that are mirrored in the book of Acts. He examines how a reading of Acts in this light can fill interpretive gaps left by literary and rhetorical-critical studies that focus on the reading rather than the hearing of biblical texts.
