Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antiquities and Curiosities of the Exchequer Mr. Gomme proposes, in conjunction with Mr, Ordish, to issue a series of volumes in illustration of Ancient English History, suited to the ordinary reader as well as to the professed antiquary, and he has asked me to write a short preface. I do not know why I should have been selected, for, although I have no doubt taken a great interest in archaeology, it has rather been that of pre-historic times. Perhaps, however, it is partly because my friend, Mr. Gomme, knows that I should wish to do anything he asks me, and partly because I have been for many years a member, and was for some time chairman, of the Public Accounts Committee, and may therefore be supposed to know something of the subject dealt with in the first volume. Book excerpt: In this volume, Mr. Hubert Hall puts before the reader a succinct but comprehensive account of the Exchequer, more particularly its antiquities and curiosities. He discusses at some length the site of the ancient Treasury at Winchester, and of the old Exchequer buildings at Westminster. He also endeavors to re-construct the interior of the ancient Exchequer, its Treasury and Court-house, with their Chests and Rolls and Tallies; and gives an interesting account of the quaint Chessboard and Game of Counters, wherein the annual Budget was figured by rude and visible symbols, and describes all the chief appurtenances of its mediaeval existence. He has given special attention to the official establishment of the Court and Treasure-house, and has fully described the functions of the several officers down to the reign of George III. Several curious letters and accounts that are given in the volume, serve to throw light upon the domestic habits of many generations of officials. Illustrations of the Chests and Seals, Tallies, and picture-writings, are portrayed here with other famous emblems of a bygone era. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. "This volume, the first of Mr. Stock's ' Camden Library, ' is decidedly fortunate in its author. Mr. Hall has long made a special study of the antiquities and curiosities of the Exchequer, and is probably as deeply versed in the 'Dialogus' and the subjects to which it relates as any writer in this country." -Athenaeum. "Mr. Hubert Hall has made a readable and even an amusing book of a theme which not many years ago was a mystery save to a handful of specialists. We can commend the book to all students of mediaeval English history, and to others who have any antiquarian taste." -Saturday Review. "Contains a mass of curious information, and by the help of the author the whole process of change in the financial operations of the country can be traced from the earliest times down to modem days. The book is a highly interesting one, not only to antiquaries, but to all persons who take an intelligent interest in the history of our country." -Standard. "These pages are by no means a dull and dry record of the past, but they abound in quaint and amusing stories." -Morning Post."

Second only in honour to Domesday Book itself, the 'Liber Rubeus de Scaccario' has, for more than six centuries, held a foremost place among our national records. Prized by officials for its precedents, by antiquaries for its vast store of topographical and genealogical information, its well-thumbed pages have been scanned by twenty generations of students. At last--one may use the term advisedly, for the work was announced as ' in the press' for years--almost all its unpublished contents are made accessible in print.1 The responsible authorities of the Rolls Series could not have selected an official more obviously qualified to edit the great Exchequer register than was Mr. Hubert Hall. Devoting himself with special zeal to the records of the ancient Exchequer, he had produced, as the fruit of his studies, 'Court Life under the Plantagenets' (1890), and 'Antiquities and Curiosities of the Exchequer' (1891), while the papers in the third and seventh volumes of the Pipe Roll Society on 'the system of the Exchequer' were also from his pen. 1 The Bed Booh of the Exchequer, 3 vols. Edited by Hubert Hall, F.S.A., of the Public Record Office... under the direction of the Master of the Bolls. There is, perhaps, no man living, certainly no Englishman, so intimately conversant with the early records of what to the men of the twelfth century was already the mysterious, the almost sacrosanct Court of the Exchequer. But Mr. Hall had further claims. As Director of the Royal Historical Society, he was clearly an authority on history, while his knowledge of palaeography and 'diplomatic, ' which was an essential requisite in the editor of a corrupt and derived MS., comprising a congeries of records, is vouched for by the..
