Book excerpt: Was held in Zichron Yaakov, Israel, on 16-21 September 2000. This book is the complete collection of the invited lectures presented at the Symposium. Research interest in the fundamental properties of water and water-mediated phenomena has generated a wealth of new knowledge and novel technological applications in widely diverse areas: food science, agriculture, microbial and plant physiology and metabolism, human health, environrnent. ...The title of lhe Symposium: "Water Science for Food, Health, Agriculture and Environrnent" was defined so as to reflect this diversity. True to the tradition set by previous ISOPOW meetings, ISOPOW 2000 was planned according to the Gordon Conference concept. About 110 participants, not including accompanying guests and students, from 21 different countries attended the Symposium. The scientific programme consisted of 22 invited lectures, 60 poster presentations and two sessions of expert panel discussions with audience participation. Two additional sessions were devoted to the oral presentation and discussion of selected posters. Sufficient time for discussion was allocated at each session and between sessions and this was utilized well by the participants. The scientific leveI of the program met with extreme participant satisfaction. One of the most significant events of the Symposium was the panel discussion session entitled "Critical Issues Related to Water Activity." The original views and ideas expressed at this session and the heated discussion around controversial issues and open questions should lead to the following conclusion: "Water Science" will continue to generate new material of utmost importance and high scientific quality for many more ISOPOW meetings to come.

Book excerpt: Chain Mobility and Progress in Medicine, Pharmaceuticals, and Polymer Science and Technology covers the core fundamentals and applications of chain movement, chain mobility, segmental mobility, segmental dynamics, and chain orientation in polymer science, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and other disciplines. The book starts by defining principal terms, then looks at the work of Pierre-Gilles de Gennes and his 1991 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on polymer-chain motion. From there the book discusses the different mechanisms of chain motion of macromolecular substances, the conditions under which chains move, and the effects of these movements on properties of materials, such as chain alignment, chain orientation, creation of free volume, dimensional stability, and more. The final chapters provide insight on analytical methods of chain movement, chain movement phenomena in different polymers, and various fields of application. All concepts, findings, and applications are discussed in easy-to-understand language stripped of disciplinary slang, making the book accessible to researchers and practitioners across a variety of scientific fields.

Book excerpt: "the present book will be of great value for both newcomers to the field and mature active researchers by serving as a coherent and timely introduction to some of the modern approaches, ideas, results, emerging understanding, and many open questions in this fascinating field of polymer glasses, supercooled liquids, and thin films" –Kenneth S. Schweizer, Morris Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (from the Foreword) This book provides a timely and comprehensive overview of molecular level insights into polymer glasses in confined geometries and under deformation. Polymer glasses have become ubiquitous to our daily life, from the polycarbonate eyeglass lenses on the end of our nose to large acrylic glass panes holding water in aquarium tanks, with advantages over glass in that they are lightweight and easy to manufacture, while remaining transparent and rigid. The contents include an introduction to the field, as well as state of the art investigations. Chapters delve into studies of commonalities across different types of glass formers (polymers, small molecules, colloids, and granular materials), which have enabled microscopic and molecular level frameworks to be developed. The authors show how glass formers are modeled across different systems, thereby leading to treatments for polymer glasses with first-principle based approaches and molecular level detail. Readers across disciplines will benefit from this topical overview summarizing the key areas of polymer glasses, alongside an introduction to the main principles and approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their low density and tailored properties, polymer matrix composites are attractive candidates for a large number of industrial applications ranging from aerospace to transportation and energy. However, the behaviour of polymer-based materials is strongly affected by a number of environmental factors. Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account. The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions. Each chapter is supplemented by industrial case studies to help in the understanding of degradation of composites in real life situations. This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracyThis book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy

Book excerpt: Significant research has been done in polymeric nanocomposites and progress has been made in understanding nanofiller-polymer interface and interphase and their relation to nanocomposite properties. However, the information is scattered in many different publication media. This is the first book that consolidates the current knowledge on understanding, characterization and tailoring interfacial interactions between nanofillers and polymers by bringing together leading researchers and experts in this field to present their cutting edge research. Eleven chapters authored by senior subject specialists cover topics including: Thermodynamic mechanisms governing nanofiller dispersion, engineering of interphase with nanofillers Role of interphase in governing the mechanical, electrical, thermal and other functional properties of nanocomposites, characterization and modelling of the interphase Effects of crystallization on the interface, chemical and physical techniques for surface modification of nanocellulose reinforcements Electro-micromechanical and nanoindentation techniques for interface evaluation, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to quantify filler-matrix adhesion and nanocomposite mechanical properties.
