Book excerpt: What is the purpose of evolution? Why is velocity in the Universe limited to the speed of light? She is an elf from before the evolution of mankind, plunged into the year 2456. She claims to be the one who aided Father Earth in the design of all species of life on Earth. But her Parent has now sent her to the time of the ending of the world, which she swears to prevent. In her original life before the Ice Age, she struggles with Black, the leader of a tribe of primitive Homo sapiens. She despises him for his rough nature, but she eventually understands that it is her duty to get him started on the bumpy road to evolution. In her present, the intelligent races of the galaxy are pooling knowledge through the Archives, a galactic network of alien transmissions, to break the lightspeed barrier and finally open up the galaxy. But what is needed to make the Earth endless? This novel is a unique, fantastic theory on the history of evolution, based on hard, historic facts blended with fun fantasy. It also probes the future possibilities of mankind, as well as the laws of physics that govern the Universe, which humankind needs to see as a challenge in order to conquer the stars. It is a standalone story, but also the first part of a trilogy whose next volumes will also be published in the near future. The second volume, Endless Mars details the struggles of a long-ago Martian race to escape their dying planet, while the third instalment, entitled Endless Space, rounds up the story of all the intelligent races of the galaxy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans¾there's no understanding them, And no dealing with them either. Or even their planet. Pity the poor aliens, whose shape-changing ability should let them take over the planet Earth before the humans even know they're there-if it weren't for all that omnipresent pollution. Or consider another set of invaders, from a planet where the weather is always mild and the changing of the seasons is hardly noticeable. They land in force and their weapons are more powerful than those of the primitive humans-but they've never before had to deal with below-zero temperatures, flash floods or tornados-not to mention volcanoes. Then there were the aliens who noticed how belligerent humans were, and gave them the "gift" of TV-like devices which would show anything anywhere on Earth, which was sure to lead to war. Imagine how surprised the aliens were when the humans took the gadgets apart, improved them, and started spying on everything the aliens were up to, all over the galaxy. Humans don't make sense, they don't fight fair, and they're making aliens throughout interstellar space think seriously about pulling up stakes and moving to another galaxy! Book excerpt: It is the near future. Axel, a computer scientist, with broad, mechanically-inclined hobbies, is working on a prototype matter transmitter. It is erratic and, in an instant, he finds his consciousness has been transmitted across space. It has been received into the brain of a young, male humanoid immediately following the latter's brain-death from a traumatic wound; one that has not, however, left any long-term organic injuries: Axel of Earth has become Lexar of Nandroth. Lexar's race are called the Androthi. Their world has some geophysical similarities to Earth, and some similarity of life forms but with notable exceptions. The civilisations of the Androthi are roughly on the same technological level as 14th century Europe and Asia. Their overwhelming problem is that their world has been invaded by self-replicating robots, the mekkans, which have a highly advanced - and to living creatures deadly - technology. The mekkans are relatively few in number. They require, for their power and construction, minerals that they cannot easily find and mine. To obtain them, they have set about subjugating Nandroth and enslaving the Androthi, either by direct force or by fomenting internecine warfare. Their ultimate intention is to refuel their nuclear?powered space craft and continue their conquest of living worlds in the universe. Axel-Lexar's self-appointed task is to get his fellow Androthi to accept who and what he is, and to get them to help him create, with what resources are available, strategies to defeat the mekkans. Above all, he wants to destroy the mekkan's ability to threaten intelligent life forms on other worlds. The work deals, inter alia, with the nature of the linguistic problems faced by Axel on his becoming Lexar and the means by which he attempts to transform the local technology. He seeks to exploit special features of mekkan engineering and their rigid social structure, in order to subvert their seemingly unassailable power. But, in the meantime, there are defences to organise against the mekkans' highly advanced weapons, and battles to be fought against other Androthi nations who have become the mekkans' allies. To complicate his new life, he finds that Lexar is betrothed to the teenage daughter of the local Lord. She is a highly intelligent, independent and passionate individual, at first disbelieving, then suspicious and finally jealously protective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of the best short stories of Mark Clifton makes these fine tales readily available for the first time in two decades. Winner with Frank Riley of the 1955 Hugo Award for They’d Rather Be Right, Clifton has for a variety of reasons unrelated to the quality of his writing all but disappeared from the awareness of today’s science fiction audience. Never a prolific writer he had published only about twenty-five short stories before his death in 1963. But with those stories and his three novels he irrevocably altered the course of contemporary science fiction. Almost single-handedly he introduced the full range of psychological insights to the commonly occurring themes of the genre—alien invasion, expanding technology, revolution against political theocracy, and space exploration and colonization—to ever more truthfully portray how humanity would react to a future that could be either mindless or intellectually stunning. With his first published story, “What Have I Done?” Clifton initiated the theme of a starkly realistic world in which, at its best, humanity is inalterably vile—a theme that became an inextricable part of all his subsequent works. In his later works Clifton occasionally clothed his bitter indictment in the garb of comedy. The stories collected here include “What Have I Done?” “Star, Bright,” “Crazy Joey,” “What Thin Partitions,” “Sense from Thought Divide,” “How Allied,” “Remembrance and Reflection,” “Hide! Hide! Witch!” “Clerical Error,” “What Now, Little Man?” and “Hang Head, Vandal!”

What better time for two legendary starship captains to set aside the demands of duty and simply take some well-deserved time off. But when James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard arrive on Bajor to dive among the ruins of an ancient sunken city, they find themselves in far from relaxing circumstances. The small group of scientists the captains have joined suddenly discover their equipment sabotaged -- isolating them from Deep Space Nine and from any hope of rescue -- as a murderer stalks them, one by one. Cut off from the people and the technology on which they have always depended, Kirk and Picard must rely more than ever on their own skills and resources -- as well as on their growing friendship -- to solve the mysterious killings and, at the same time, save one of Bajor's greatest living treasures. With time running out and Picard missing after a diving disaster, Kirk must search his memories of the past for the solution, plunging him into a harrowing personal journey that reveals the beginning of his path from young Starfleet officer to legendary galactic hero. From the shores of Bajor's Inland Sea to the welcoming arms of a seductive and deadly alien commander intent on making Kirk her own, The Captain's Peril is Captain Kirk's most personal, and his most extreme, adventure yet.
