Book excerpt: Transform yourself for the sake of the world. Learn to practice thinking, feeling, sensing, and willing without egoism. Let your work be the shadow that your I casts when it is shone upon by the flame of your higher self. By "mantric sayings" (mantrische Spruche), Rudolf Steiner means content given by the spiritual world to be absorbed and experienced in meditation. Thus the volume contains intuitive insights received "from the spiritual world" and, as such, the vehicle to return us to it. The meditations were often given personally to others for general use, as well as for specific situations or needs such as healing and strengthening, in relation to those who had died, or for anthroposophic work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together some of the most significant mantras bequeathed to us by Rudolf Steiner, mantras that, when set together in the form presented here, invoke a comprehensive whole relating far-reaching developments in our Cosmos to our experience of Nature's yearly cycle as well as the daily cycle of Sleep and Waking. With the appearance of this volume, those familiar with the Anthroposophical world-view will find fresh opportunity to re-think the great connections that Rudolf Steiner so faithfully opened to our imaginations. In the meantime, a specific Meditation Course is proposed based on these mantras that offers to open up the spheres of the Cosmos, Nature, and the Daily cycle to a comprehensive and systematic practice. The form this volume takes builds on the author's personal experience based on years of living with the mantras and how these came together for him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring over 90 of Rudolf Steiner's best-loved verses and meditations, this volume collects a range of material on various themes, such as working with spiritual beings, connecting with loved ones who have passed over, developing selfhood, and celebrating festivals and seasons. Countless people have worked with these meditations over the decades and can testify to their power, as well as the strength and comfort they offer the meditant. Although various translations from the German exist for many of the verses, George and Mary Adams's renderings can truly be said to be 'classic', and are the most widely used within the English-speaking anthroposophical movement that has grown up around Steiner's work. George Adams acted as Rudolf Steiner's personal interpreter when he lectured in Britain, and thus developed an intuitive understanding of Steiner's deepest impulses connected to esoteric work. Those who know these verses will be delighted that they are available again, while those who approach them for the first time will discover a treasure of wisdom as well as abundant tools for personal transformation. This edition also features the original German texts where applicable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolf Steiner often emphasized the importance of meditation practice for the self-development of students of Anthroposophy. In his writings and lectures, he offered various instructions for approaches to meditation and for strengthening qualities needed to unfold our latent spiritual capacities. In this accessible book, Massimo Scaligero—a lifelong student of Rudolf Steiner and Spiritual Science—systematically illumines Steiner’s practices, building on the foundation of our human constitution and explaining how and why these practices work. Such efforts take place in the world and with the people around us and restore us to our true condition: “Initiation is the restoration of the spirit’s original state, despite its human incarnation.” This text by Massimo Scaligero should be read and thought deeply, but also acted upon. It will be an aid to all those who wish to take the path of initiation through Spiritual Science. A Practical Manual of Meditation is a translation from Italian of Manuale Pratico della Meditazione (Teseo, Rome, 1973/2005).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meditative reflection--strengthening thinking and feeling through the will--is one of the main methods of experiencing Anthroposophy. Prokofieff writes: "The best path to this goal is inner work with the Foundation Stone Meditation, because this meditation is the quintessence of the whole of Anthroposophy, given in meditatively inspired form by means of earthly words." Rudolf Steiner described the substance of the "Foundation Stone Meditation" as spoken by him "out of the will of the spiritual world," and as "verses heard from the Cosmic Word." Owing to its spiritual and mantric form, the text of this meditation represents an archetype and is thus a key to the most diverse areas of world and human existence. Depending on "which spiritual portal is opened with this key," explains Prokofieff, "one arrives at one result or another, and one and the same line of the meditation becomes a reply to the most varied questions." The author applies this method in this work and, in the process, illuminates and opens up many dimensions of spiritual science. His research embraces, among other aspects, the relationship of the "Foundation Stone Meditation" to the being Anthroposophia, the spiritual hierarchies, human karma, the Rosicrucian, Michaelic and Grail streams, the Mystery of Golgotha, the two Jesus children, the three spiritual sources of Anthroposophy, and even the Constitution of the General Anthroposophical Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a spiritual teacher, Rudolf Steiner wrote many inspired and beautifully-crafted verses. Often they were given in relation to specific situations or in response to individual requests; sometimes they were offered to assist generally in the process of meditation. Regardless of their origins, they are uniformly powerful in their ability to connect the meditating individual with spiritual archetypes. Thus, the meditations provide valuable tools for developing experience and knowledge of subtle dimensions of reality. Matthew Barton has translated and selected Steiner’s verses, sensitively arranging them by theme. In this collection – to promote harmony and healing – Rudolf Steiner helps us discover a renewed sense of our true place in the world. The verses show how we can learn to know ourselves by looking outwards to the substances and processes at work in the cosmos, and in contrast to know the world by looking inwards to the microcosmic depths of the human self. By integrating spirit and matter within, we heal divisions in our relationships with others. For modern people, increasingly divorced from a living relationship with nature, these verses help to unfold a world of interconnections.

Often they were given in relation to specific situations or in response to individual requests; sometimes they were created for general use in assisting the process of meditation. Regardless of their origins, they are uniformly powerful in their ability to connect the meditant with spiritual archetypes and realities, and are valuable tools for developing experience and knowledge of other dimensions. In this collection of meditations for times of day and seasons of the year, Rudolf Steiner delves into the rhythms of nature and their relation to human beings. The verses in the first part relate to the cycle of waking and sleeping, echoing the greater rhythms of birth and death. They provide an accompaniment for each day, gently reminding us where we have come from and where we are going. The second section focuses on the human being's passage through nature's changing seasons - a greater cycle of sleeping and waking. Together they offer us a spiritual light for our journey through life.. Matthew Barton has delicately translated these meditations into English, many for the first time, and arranged them thematically in this outstanding new series.

Book excerpt: "People who practice esoteric exercises grow spiritually into the future; they experience in themselves what will one day come about, and what they experience in this way is what we know as the higher worlds. These represent future conditions of humankind" (Rudolf Steiner, Munich 1907). Rudolf Steiner spoke the Foundation Stone meditation at the Christmas Conference of the General Anthroposophical Society in 1923, giving it to the Society members for strengthening their forces. The meditation's words contain, as Sergei O. Prokofieff states, "the quintessence of the whole of Anthroposophy." Thus, Rudolf Steiner was bestowing on the members the possibility of dealing resolutely with the specific tasks that awaited them. In this short, potent volume, the author suggests further that "The Foundation Stone Meditation" represents the concerns of every individual of our time, allowing each of us to maintain our humanity in the face of the challenges and catastrophes of both the present and the future. Steiner said that one could hear the words of the meditation "sounding" in one's heart. This process of "hearing" will acquire even more significance and reality in future, and can be of enormous help to anyone who opens themselves to it. It is against this background that Selg has written this introductory book: to promote awareness of the meditation, understanding of its historic place in the catastrophic twentieth century, and its critical but latent contribution to the future.

Book excerpt: Meditating is a totally free undertaking; it is the epitome of an autonomous deed.' - Rudolf Steiner. Based on brief, pithy quotations from Rudolf Steiner's collected works, the 'spiritual perspectives' in this volume present core concepts on the subject of meditation. These brief extracts do not claim to provide exhaustive treatment of the subject, but open up approaches to the complexity of Steiner's extraordinary world of ideas. Some readers will find these fragments sufficient stimulus in themselves, whilst others will use the source references as signposts towards deeper study and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What lies spiritually and cosmically at the foundation of a community like the Anthroposophical Society? In wrestling with this question, I have come to the inner conviction that it is justified to speak of the Anthroposophical Society as a Michael community." -- Paul Mackay How can one understand Rudolf Steiner's use of the word we in the last part of the Foundation Stone Meditation: "What we found from our hearts and direct from our heads with focused will"? What is the meaning of "we" here? In the first part of this original and inspiring work, Paul Mackay takes this question as a point of departure, developing a unique approach to working with the seven rhythms of the Meditation. Based on personal experiences, he concludes that the rhythms express the members of the human makeup. We in the fifth rhythm has the quality of "spirit-self." The second part of the book considers the same we from a karmic perspective, with reference to Steiner's lectures on karmic relationships, events in the fourth and ninth centuries, the mystery of death and evil, and the restoration of karmic truth. "What's the use of telling people over and over that we're not a sect if we act like a sect? You see, something that needs to be well understood, especially by the members of the Anthroposophical Society, is what any society in our modern age requires. A society must not be a sect in any way. If the Anthroposophical Society is to stand on firm ground, the word 'we' can really never play a role in regard to opinion. Again and again, anthroposophists are heard saying to the rest of the world: 'We [the Society] think this or that. This or that is going on with us. We want this or that.' In earlier times, societies could present a face of conformity to the world. Now this is no longer possible. Within a contemporary society, each individual must really be a free human being. Only individuals have views, thoughts, and opinions." -- Rudolf Steiner (1923)

Book excerpt: During the refounding of the Anthroposophical Society as the General Anthroposophical Society at Christmas 1923/24, Rudolf Steiner also reconstituted, as the School of Spiritual Science, the Esoteric School he had led in three classes from 1904 to 1914, at the same time extending its scope by adding artistic and scientific Sections. However, owing to his illness and later death in March 1925, he was only able to make a beginning by establishing the First Class and the Sections. The actual step from the Esoteric School to the School of Spiritual Science was nevertheless an exceptional one. The Esoteric School from Helena Blavatsky’s time had been secret. Its existence was known only to those personally invited to participate. In contrast, the existence of the School of Spiritual Science was stated openly in the public statutes of the General Anthroposophical Society. From the Christmas Conference onwards, Rudolf Steiner worked within this publicly acknowledged framework. The Class Lessons comprise a complete spiritual course of nineteen fundamental lessons given between February and August 1924, several lessons given at other locations, and seven further lessons from September 1924 which take up the themes of the first part of the nineteen lessons in a modified form. This authentic, accurate and high-quality bilingual edition – with English and German texts printed side by side – is published in conjunction with the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum. A compact four-volume clothbound set, it features plates with Rudolf Steiner’s handwritten notes of the mantras and reproductions of his original colour blackboard drawings. The translations of the mantric verses have been reworked by a committed group of translators, linguists and editors, expressing subtleties of meaning, grammatical accuracy and poetic style whilst retaining the original sound and metre of the German mantric forms. Three versions of the existing English translations are also included.

The book is of interest to anyone wanting to learn about meditation and Anthroposophy, and the sixfold path as given in Anthroposophy in particular.
