Book excerpt: The report describes and summarizes the results of an anthropometric survey of United States Air Force women carried out during 1968. Included in the report are a description of the methods and techniques used in the survey, descriptions--visual as well as verbal--of the measuring techniques used, and both uni- and bi-variate statistical summaries. A total of 137 anthropometric dimensions were measured on a sample of 1,905 US Air Force women: 548 officers or officer trainees and 1,357 enlisted women. This anthropometry included 5 measures of weight and fat thickness, 30 measures of body height and length, 26 measures of body girths, 15 measures of body breadths and depths, and 12 measures of body surface distance. There were, in addition, 30 measures of the head and face, 3 of the hand, and 2 of the feet. Thirteen measurements were remeasures of the subject while she was wearing a foundation garment. Background data gathered included age, rank, military occupation, birthplace, blood type, and age at menarche.

Material presented includes such unpublished anthropometric data measured under one-g and zero-g conditions. Also included are 1985 body size projections and actual cutouts of quarter-scale two-dimensional manikins for use by designers. Volume II contains data resulting from surveys of 61 military and civilian populations of both sexes from the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Some 295 measured variables are defined and illustrated. Book excerpt: Assessment of the physical dimensions of the human body and application of this knowledge to the design of tools, equip ment, and work are certainly among the oldest arts and sciences. It would be an easy task if all anthropometric dimensions, of all people, would follow a general rule. Thus, philosophers and artists embedded their ideas about the most aesthetic proportions into ideal schemes of perfect proportions. "Golden sections" were developed in ancient India, China, Egypt, and Greece, and more recently by Leonardo DaVinci, or Albrecht Durer. However, such canons are fictive since actual human dimensions and proportions vary greatly among individuals. The different physical appearances often have been associated with mental, physiological and behavioral characteristics of the individuals. Hypocrates (about 460-377 BC) taught that there are four temperaments (actually, body fluids) represented by four body types. The psychiatrist Ernst Kretchmer (1888-1964) proposed that three typical somatotypes (pyknic, athletic, aesthenic) could reflect human character traits. Since the 1940's, W. H. Sheldon and his coworkers devised a system of three body physiques (endo-, meso-, ectomorphic). The classification was originally qualitative, and only recently has been developed to include actual measurements.

Included here are size systems for upper body, lower body and total body garments. Designed for use by clothing designers and pattern makers, this document consists in large part of sizing tables on which recommended values for some 59 dimensions relevant to garment construction are highlighted for easy identification. Regression equations, rather than more traditional methods, were used to develop the sizing data in this report which also contains sufficient supportive material to permit designers to modify suggested dimensional values or to compute alternative sizing programs. A visual index accompanied by measurement descriptions, and bivariate distribution tables on which size categories have been graphically superimposed serve as visual references for users. A glossary of terms is also included. Source of the dimensional data used in this report was a survey of 1,330 U.S. Army women conducted in 1976-77. (Author).
