Book excerpt: This volume provides cartographic representation of information generated by the People of India project on the distribution of cultural traits and languages, linguistic traits, anthropometry, demographic dimensions of population, and biological traits. Analysis of this data suggests patternsin the distribution of traits, which are mapped in this Atlas. The Atlas presents this distribution of traits in three parts: ecology and cultural traits; language and linguistic traits; and demographic and biological traits. There are in all 149 maps. Of these, 72 are on ecology and culturaltraits, covering a wide spectrum - including environment, distribution of communities, cropping patterns, food habits, social organization, and occupations. The distribution of language families and of linguistic traits which cut across language families is presented in 16 maps. There are 7 mapscovering demographic dimensions such as sex-ratios, household sizes, marital status, and literacy. Finally, 54 biological maps present the distribution of somatometric variations, dermatoglyphics, blood groups, and several other genetic traits.

Book excerpt: Illustrations: 13 Maps Description: The Ethnology of India is a laudable attempt to understand the variations of the people of India. The book deals in a very systematic way with the problem of the antecedents and ethnic affinities of the people of India in all its complexities. The discussion on the term ethnology as distinguishable from ethnography , derivation and the usage of term race and its different connotations, and the commentary on the racial classifications of man proposed from time to time, make an interesting reading. Based on the extensive survey of the literature available till date on the prehistoric and protohistoric human skeletal material from different archaeological sites in India, the author has reconstructed the prehistoric ethnic history of India. All the available views on the ethnic/racial diversity of the poeple of India too have been critically evaluated. Large anthropomorphic data pertaining to stature, cephalic index, nasal index and facial index collected during the period proximate to Guha's time have been analysed to test the much used Guha's hypothesis regarding the racial affinities of the people of India. In the book, the author has lucidly synthesized the so far available information and developed a conceptual framework for better understanding of the ethnic diversity of India.

Book excerpt: On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force with a unique provision—Article 370. The special status accorded to the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the article meant that its people lived under a different set of laws while being part of the Indian Union. Alternating deftly between history and politics, A.G. Noorani examines a wide range of documents pertaining to Article 370. He incisively analyses the implications and consequences of the article for the constitutional democracy of the state and the nation. From Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India in 1947 to the various negotiations thereafter; Sheikh Abdullah's arrest to the framing of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir and the replacement of Sadar-i-Riyasat, this book impeccably documents the little-known constitutional history of the state. Noorani underscores the politics behind the gradual erosion of Article 370 and the need for restoration of autonomy. Critically analysing the various judgments relating to this constitutional arrangement, he suggests a framework for resolving the 'Kashmir problem'. Collecting together rare, often unseen and unnoticed, letters, memoranda, white papers, proclamations, and amendments, this book will be an indispensable resource on Kashmir.

Book excerpt: This open access book provides an evidence-based roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring that the growth process is efficient, inclusive, and sustainable, and results in sustained growth of farmers’ incomes. The book, instead of looking for global best practices and evaluating them to assess the possibility of replicating these domestically, looks inward at the best practices and experiences within Indian states, to answer questions such as -- how the agricultural growth process can be speeded up and made more inclusive, and financially viable; are there any best practices that can be studied and replicated to bring about faster growth in agriculture; does the prior hypothesis that rapid agricultural growth can alleviate poverty faster, reduce malnutrition, and augment farmers’ incomes stand? To answer these questions, the book follows four broad threads -- i) Linkage between agricultural performance, poverty and malnutrition; ii) Analysing the historical growth performance of agricultural sector in selected Indian states; iii) Will higher agricultural GDP necessarily result in higher incomes for farmers; iv) Analysing the current agricultural policy environment to evaluate its efficiency and efficacy, and consolidate all analysis to create a roadmap. These are discussed in 12 chapters, which provide a building block for the concluding chapter that presents a roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring growth in farmers’ incomes.
