Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Track count data of eastern coyote on Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable, MA were collected through GPS mapping of track recovery transects over seven months, between September, 2010 and March, 2011. The Formozov-Malyshev-Pereleshin formula was applied to the track counts to estimate coyote densities, predicting a density of approximately 0.20 coyotes/km2 in the study area. Statistical analysis were conducted on data in order to indicate if coyote movements were influenced by habitat preference, season (month), and east-west location; of these, only habitat type exhibited a statistically significant difference among densities, with coyotes preferring the interdune habitat over the marsh habitat and beachfront. This preference is most likely influenced by food availability and/or anthropogenic presence. The reported study's preliminary site-specific baseline data may be beneficial for future management plans intent on protecting threatened shore birds while maintaining an appropriate meso-predator component in the Sandy Neck barrier beach/salt marsh ecosystem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once found throughout the Rocky Mountains and forests of the northern states, the lynx now hides in pockets of its former range while feeding mostly on small animals like snowshoe hares. A team of government and university scientists review the newest scientific knowledge of this unique cat's history, distribution, and ecology. The chapters on this web site provide information for current scientific and public debates regarding the fate of the lynx in the United States. Chapters look at the relationships among lynx, its habitat, and its prey. The attributes of northern versus southern lynx populations are compared and contrasted. The authors caution against making decisions without enough knowledge and show where we lack information. While the authors present the latest preliminary research results on lynx and offer some qualified insights into lynx management, the book's intent is to assess the current state of knowledge regarding lynx.

Book excerpt: This review addresses the current management of larger mammalian carnivores to increase, maintain, or reduce their numbers, while taking into account the population of certain ungulate prey and their relation to predators, social pressures and attitudes of the public towards predators, and the effects of sport hunting and trapping on carnivore population dynamics. This review considers brown bears "(Ursus arctos," black bears "(U. americanus)," coyotes "(Canis latrans)," wolves "(Canis lupus, C. lycaon)," and mountain lions "(Felis concolor." The appendix presents the results of a statistical analysis of trends discussed in this report.
