Book excerpt: Sir Anthony Caro revolutionized the medium of sculpture in the 1960s when he moved away from making elaborately modelled, figurative works cast in bronze, instead creating large, abstract assemblages out of prefabricated steel and aluminum elements. Sculpture Laid Bare?honours the legacy of this titan of modernist sculpture. Monumental in scale, lyrically evocative and openly constructed, Caro's sculptures foreground their brute materiality and the unvarnished signs of their manufacture. Anthony Caro: Sculpture Laid Bare showcases four of Caro's late sculptures, some of the most ambitious the artist has ever produced as well as earlier work to demonstrate both the continuity and the divergences with the most recent sculptures. Also included in the book are essays by Kenneth Brummel and New York-based curator and critic Karen Wilkin that consider Caro's sculptures from the perspective of his studio practice and his previous work.

Book excerpt: "The decision to show these drawings with sculptures in the Madison Avenue gallery came from the wish to demonstrate the consistency of Caro's vision, the directing force and energy within the sculptures on view [...] Caro's drawings from the 1950s were neither preliminary sketches for sculptures nor were they imaginary sculptures but these exploratory exercises on newsprint were carefully preserved. They now provide a reminder of the thrill of the creative process when free from the practicalities of contruction."--Page 19.

Download or read book Anthony Caro written by Karen Wilkin and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth volume in Lund Humphries' series of monographs on British sculptor Anthony Caro and the first publication to focus on his use of stainless steel as a distinct body of work.0Caro employed stainless steel extensively, from intimately scaled Table Sculptures to extremely large works, over many decades, and in his mature works, Caro's exploration and interrogation of this material became increasingly important. 0Karen Wilkin analyses Caro's use of stainless steel in the context of the development of modernist constructed sculpture, pioneered in the UK by Caro and in the US by David Smith, a friend and admired predecessor, from whom Caro inherited most of the stainless steel he first employed, following Smith's untimely death in 1965. 0Karen Wilkin's text represents a much-needed overview of Caro's late career and a vital expansion of our understanding of 20th-century and early 21st-century modernist sculpture.
Download or read book Anthony Caro written by William Rubin and published by Steve Parish. This book was released on 1975 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Anthony Caro holds a particular eminence as the artist who in recent years has most significantly extended the tradition of constructed sculpture established by Picasso on the eve of World War I. Caro was the first to create large sculptures that spread out along the ground, independent of base or pedestal. In creating these pieces he broke with the 'totemic' conventions of Western sculpture (still adhered to by Picasso and David Smith) in which the work rises to confront the viewer. These consequences were of major import. As William Rubin points out, 'The prevailing horizontality of Caro's sculpture makes available to him configurations hitherto unknown in sculpture. The interrelationships of the 'ground plan' and the vertical structures that rise from it--the rhyming, the analogies, even the puns of this dialogue--open a vast range of choices.' In effect, Caro's approached has enabled him 'to do something utterly new--to work, for the first time modern sculpture, in a non-pictorial, integrally three-dimensional manner.' This internationally esteemed British artist is now the subject of a comprehensive survey that reviews his early career and penetratingly analyzes his mature work, presenting the entire oeuvre to date against the historical background of twentieth-century sculpture. During the writing of this study the author had the benefit of repeated discussions with the artist. The book is not only a masterly introduction to Caro's work, but also a valuable scholarly tool, complete with chronology, bibliography, list of exhibitions, and extensive notes. The abundant illustrations make this volume the most inclusive pictorial record published on Caro's achievement." -- Back cover

Book Synopsis Sculpture Since 1945 by : Andrew Causey
Download or read book Sculpture Since 1945 written by Andrew Causey and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1945 the modern revolution in sculpture has gathered pace, and sculpture has now ceased to be the fixed category it once was. In recent decades the modernist idea of sculpture across the UK, America, and Europe, has been challenged, and issues such as nationalityand politics have been brought in to the arena of public discussion. In this ground-breaking account of the development of post-War sculpture Andrew Causey examines innovative and avant-garde works in relation to contemporary events, festivals, commissions, the marketplace, and the changing functions of museums. He explores the use of everyday objects and the importance of sculptural context, discussing figurative and non-figurative works, Anti-form, Minimalism, experimental form, Earth Art, landscape sculpture, installation, and Performance Art. The holistic picture of post-War sculpture which emerges establishes for the first time the key events and themes round which future debate will centre. From the pre-publication reviews: Andrew Causey weaves his way adroitly through the labyrinth of post-War sculpture ... No one else has charted the territory so comprehensively s Professor Stephen Bann, University of Kent at Canterbury stimulating and persuasive ... balances a searching analysis of the impact of institutional change, issues of sites and environment, and key critical debates with revealing commentaries on individual artists and works of art ... a discerning guide for anyone interested in contemporary art and culture. s Elizabeth Cowling, University of Edinburgh a clear guide to the various directions of sculpture and the work of sculptors in the years when modern sculpture has begun to stand in its own right as a major art form. s Sir Anthony Caro, Sculptor
