Book excerpt: Written for the professional statistician or graduate statistics student, the primary objective of this book is to describe a system, based on the LISP language, for statistical computing and dynamic graphics to show how it can be used as an effective platform for a wide range of statistical computing tasks ranging from basic calculations to customizing dynamic graphs. In addition, it introduces object-oriented programming and graphics programming in a statistical context. The discussion of these ideas is based on the Lisp-Stat system; readers with access to such a system can reproduce the examples presented and use them as a basis for further experimentation and study.

Book excerpt: The papers assembled in this book were presented at the biannual symposium of Inter national Association for Statistical Computing in Neuchcitel, Switzerland, in August of 1992. This congress marked the tenth such meeting from its inception in 1974 at Vienna and maintained the tradition of providing a forum for the open discussion of progress made in computer oriented statistics and the dissemination of new ideas throughout the statistical community. It was gratifying to see how well the groups of theoretical statisti cians, software developers and applied research workers were represented, whose mixing is an event made uniquely possible by this symposium. While maintaining traditions certain new features have been introduced at this con ference: there were a larger number of invited speakers; there was more commercial sponsorship and exhibition space; and a larger body of proceedings have been published. The structure of the proceedings follows a standard format: the papers have been grouped together according to a rough subject matter classification, and within topic follow an approximate aphabetical order. The papers are published in two volumes ac cording to the emphasis of the topics: volume I gives a slight leaning towards statistics and modelling, while volume II is focussed more on computation; but this is certainly only a crude distinction and the volumes have to be thought of as the result of a single en terprise.

Book excerpt: Bringing together scholars from around the world, this collection examines many of the historical developments in making data visible through charts, graphs, thematic maps, and now interactive displays. Today, we are used to seeing data portrayed in a dizzying array of graphic forms. Virtually any quantified knowledge, from social and physical science to engineering and medicine, as well as business, government, or personal activity, has been visualized. Yet the methods of making data visible are relatively new innovations, most stemming from eighteenth- and nineteenth-century innovations that arose as a logical response to a growing desire to quantify everything-from science, economics, and industry to population, health, and crime. Innovators such as Playfair, Alexander von Humboldt, Heinrich Berghaus, John Snow, Florence Nightingale, Francis Galton, and Charles Minard began to develop graphical methods to make data and their relations more visible. In the twentieth century, data design became both increasingly specialized within new and existing disciplines-science, engineering, social science, and medicine-and at the same time became further democratized, with new forms that make statistical, business, and government data more accessible to the public. At the close of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, an explosion in interactive digital data design has exponentially increased our access to data. The contributors analyze this fascinating history through a variety of critical approaches, including visual rhetoric, visual culture, genre theory, and fully contextualized historical scholarship.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications COMPUTING AND GRAPHICS IN STATISTICS is based on the proceedings of the last two weeks of the six week IMA 1989 summer program "Robustness, Diagnostics, Computing and Graphics in Statistics". An important objective of the organizers was to draw a broad set of statisticians working in statistical computation into collaboration on the challenging problems in this rapidly developing area. We thank the organizers of the robustness and diagnostics program Werner Stuetzle, Luke Tierney, Edward Wegman, Allan R. Wilks, and especially Andreas Buja and Paul A. Tukey who edited the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank those agencies whose financial support made the summer program possible: the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, the National Security Agency and the Office of Naval Research. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE This volume covers the computational part of IMA activities in statistics during the summer of 1989. The areas of statistical computing and graphics encompass a broad range of research, much of it represented here. The vigor of this research is probably best demonstrated by the fact that as of this writing two new journals are being launched, both entirely dedicated to these areas.
