Book excerpt: This paper investigates the fundamental building blocks of supply chain agility, which are conceptualized as supply- and demand-side competence. While the former is conceptualized as production and supply management related activities, the latter is conceptualized as distribution and demand management related activities. The model further assesses the influence of supply chain agility on operational performance, as well as its mediating role in the relationship between supply- and demand-side competence and performance. Within this framework, process compliance, i.e. how well supply chain management processes are internally executed by the firm's employees, is viewed as an enabler (moderator) on the relationship between supply chain competencies and supply chain agility. Theoretical substantiation is provided by the resource-based view of the firm augmented with the dynamic capabilities perspective. The model is tested with data from 121 supply chain management professionals. Implications for both academic theory development, and supply chain and production management practice are provided.

Book excerpt: Agility has been identified as one of the most salient issues of contemporary supply chain management. Despite its importance, there has been limited theory development in the firm supply chain agility area. Elements and linkages among agility elements are underdeveloped, and it is uncommon for any two authors to adopt the same definition. A rigorously validated survey instrument is also needed to enable researchers to credibly build on theories regarding causal links among agility-related capabilities, practices and performance outcomes. The sports science and military science theoretical bases are investigated to better understand agility and identify its dimensions, and define it in a supply chain context. Further, a comprehensive measurement instrument that draws on the foundations of social and life science theory is developed and empirically validated so that researchers can rigorously expand agility theory The antecedents of firm supply chain agility have been primarily addressed at an operational level. This dissertation expands on the work of Braunscheidel and Suresh (2009) who explored the role of different managerial orientations in achieving supply chain agility. Finally, scholars have issued research calls for an in-depth understanding of the performance outcomes of firm supply chain agility and accentuated the need to empirically examine such outcomes from an efficiency and effectiveness perspective. This dissertation responds to such calls, and further investigates the impact of firm supply chain agility on the firm's financial performance using secondary, Compustat data. Thus, this research further contributes to theory development by providing a better understanding of how firm supply chain agility impacts firm performance. Relevant managerial implications are also presented.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, supply chain agility is conceptualized in terms of the Supply Chain Operational Reference (SCOR) model framework (SupplyChainCouncil, 2001). This study first attempts to investigate the construct of supply chain agility. Relying on extant literature, a definition of supply chain agility, and a framework for measurement and assessment of supply chain agility are developed. A second major objective is to empirically investigate antecedents of supply chain agility with respect to organizational characteristics and practices that a supply chain must possess. Denison (1990) proposed a framework of relationships between organizational culture (i.e. organizational characteristics) and policies and practices, and their effects on organizational effectiveness. Building upon Denison's (1990) framework, the intent of this thesis is to investigate the effects of three organizational characteristics, namely organizational culture, market orientation and learning orientation on organizational practices and supply chain agility. The competing values framework (Cameron & Quinn, 1999) is employed to characterize organizational culture due to its ability to assess both the internal and external foci of the culture, as well as the organic or mechanistic preference for structure. Culture is defined as widely shared and strongly held values (Chatman & Jehn, 1994; O'Reilly, 1989). The competing values framework results in the identification of the dominant culture exhibited by an organization. Clan culture has an internal focus with an organic structure; adhocracy culture also has an organic structure but displays an external focus; market culture has an external focus but favors a mechanistic structure; and hierarchy culture is internally focused and has a mechanistic structure. The second organizational characteristic considered is market orientation. This construct is associated with maintaining a focus on the customer and the competitive landscape as well as the ability to distribute this information throughout the firm so that an appropriate response can be evoked. Learning orientation, the third organizational characteristic is associated with the questioning of current business practices so that new ways of competing can be adopted by the organization in keeping with its goals and objectives. The impact of the above three elements on organizational practices relating to internal and external integration, as well as lean and flexible manufacturing practices, leading to supply chain agility are also investigated.
