Book Synopsis Another Day Another Time by : Terry Dobson
Download or read book Another Day Another Time written by Terry Dobson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a recall of events from the authors very early childhood to reaching pensionable agestories that, at times, appear far-fetched and, as incredible as they are, remain honest throughout this work. Another Day Another Time is the amalgamation of all those happenings and the thoughts, dreams, and aspirations of a boy who became a man. It is apt that at times such as these that we do reflect, look back, and spend time to reminisce. And you never know, you may truly like what comes to mind. This was written to bring about a conclusion, although not necessarily an end, to the successful autobiographical accounts to be found in And Then Came Agadoo and AbriMy Oasis. Relish the voyage through many twists, turns, and difficulties, finally coming to a time of fulfillment, a voyage full of surprises, a journey, and a life worthy of a mention.
Book Synopsis Another Day in the Frontal Lobe by : Katrina Firlik
Download or read book Another Day in the Frontal Lobe written by Katrina Firlik and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katrina Firlik is a neurosurgeon, one of only two hundred or so women among the alpha males who dominate this high-pressure, high-prestige medical specialty. She is also a superbly gifted writer–witty, insightful, at once deeply humane and refreshingly wry. In Another Day in the Frontal Lobe, Dr. Firlik draws on this rare combination to create a neurosurgeon’s Kitchen Confidential–a unique insider’s memoir of a fascinating profession. Neurosurgeons are renowned for their big egos and aggressive self-confidence, and Dr. Firlik confirms that timidity is indeed rare in the field. “They’re the kids who never lost at musical chairs,” she writes. A brain surgeon is not only a highly trained scientist and clinician but also a mechanic who of necessity develops an intimate, hands-on familiarity with the gray matter inside our skulls. It’s the balance between cutting-edge medical technology and manual dexterity, between instinct and expertise, that Firlik finds so appealing–and so difficult to master. Firlik recounts how her background as a surgeon’s daughter with a strong stomach and a keen interest in the brain led her to this rarefied specialty, and she describes her challenging, atypical trek from medical student to fully qualified surgeon. Among Firlik’s more memorable cases: a young roofer who walked into the hospital with a three-inch-long barbed nail driven into his forehead, the result of an accident with his partner’s nail gun, and a sweet little seven-year-old boy whose untreated earache had become a raging, potentially fatal infection of the brain lining. From OR theatrics to thorny ethical questions, from the surprisingly primitive tools in a neurosurgeon’s kit to glimpses of future techniques like the “brain lift,” Firlik cracks open medicine’s most prestigious and secretive specialty. Candid, smart, clear-eyed, and unfailingly engaging, Another Day in the Frontal Lobe is a mesmerizing behind-the-scenes glimpse into a world of incredible competition and incalculable rewards.

Book excerpt: An extraordinary first novel capturing a family unravelling as the unspeakable finds a voice. ‘But I suppose Steven and I knew something about broken things––that sometimes you just couldn’t mend them. Never stopped trying though. Because you can’t—until you do: stop and leave the broken thing behind. Struggling to bear the legacy of her grandparents’ experience of the Holocaust and her mother’s desperate fragility, Sally seeks to reconnect with her brother Steven. Once close, Steven seems a stranger to her now that he has left London for Brighton. The echoes of their history once bound them––but it is an inheritance Steven can no longer share. Starlings reaches back through three generations of inherited trauma, exploring how the impact of untold stories ricochets down the years. As Sally winds her way back to catch the moment when Steven slipped away, she collects the fractured words and sliding memories that might piece together her grandparents’ journeys. Having always looked through the eyes of ghosts she cannot appease, she at last comes to hear what speechless mouths might have said: perhaps Before may be somewhere we can never truly leave behind and After simply the place we must try to make our home.

Download or read book Your Own Song To Sing written by Saverio and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AUTHOR UP CLOSE. I have been a contractor most of my adult life. This is actually a second career for me. Hopefully you have enjoyed many of my lyrics in this book. Some words I spelled wrong on purpose, I guess you know that by now. I did so the end of the word would have the effect I wanted; many lyricists do that. If by chance there are others, then shame on me and my spell check. Grammar never was my best subject. I’m married with six children and nine grandchildren. Working in any form has been my many hobbies. This is my first edition of Your Own Song to Sing. I will be doing additional editions, probably one a year for the next four or five years. Without writing any new material, I have enough to fill that many books, and yes, I’m still writing. Again I surely hope to see some of you that use my lyrics, if not on center stage when the awards come around. Meanwhile All Stay Well.—SAVERIO
