Book Synopsis The Anomaly of the Fertility Decline in India's Kerala State by : Kunniparampil Curien Zachariah
Download or read book The Anomaly of the Fertility Decline in India's Kerala State written by Kunniparampil Curien Zachariah and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kerala does not conform to the socioeconomic development pattern normally associated with a rapid fertility decline. This report attempts to determine the causes of the decline that Kerala is experiencing. Given that the background description is not inaccurate, attention is focused upon social, cultural, and political characteristics that may be relevant. Three of these seem more important than others: land reform, political awareness, and education. Extensive land reform has not only redistibuted the wealth, but has also contributed to the decline of the matriarchal systems; every aspect of life in Kerala is politicized, facilitating better delivery of government services; and high educational attainment has been accompanied by high unemployment among the educated. All these factors seem to have had an effect on the declining fertility rate; family planning programs seem to have been insignificant.

Book Synopsis Fertility Transition in South India by : Christophe Z Guilmoto
Download or read book Fertility Transition in South India written by Christophe Z Guilmoto and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together 13 well-researched and original essays which describe and analyse the trajectory of fertility decline in the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Documenting the fact that the fertility decline occurred in regions with vast differences in development indicators, the contributors argue that this transition must be understood as a cumulative result of several factors including family planning policies, socio-economic transformation, and changes in social perceptions towards fertility, contraception, marriage, family and child rearing. Combining various qualitative and quantitative techniques with field studies and historical analysis, the contributors go beyond the formal tools of demography and develop an original Geographical Information System (GIS), a spatialized database encompassing south Indian districts.
Book Synopsis Determinants of Fertility Decline in India by : Kunniparampil Curien Zachariah
Download or read book Determinants of Fertility Decline in India written by Kunniparampil Curien Zachariah and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian fertility has declined by at least 25 percent in the last twenty years. The current total fertility rate is 4.8%, which is lower than that in any other country at the same or a lower level of socioeconomic development, as measured by per capita income, infant mortality, female education, and the like. Nearly 90 percent of the fertility decline in the period 1961-81 can be accounted for by the increase in family planning practice, and the balance by an increase in the age at marriage. The authors interpretation of the extent, pattern, and socioeconomic correlates of fertility decline in India is that, in the changing socioeconomic situation, the increase in the cost of bringing up children creates a situation in which a smaller family size is becoming an economic necessity to an increasing number of couples. The family planning program served not only this emerging demand for small families, but created additional demand for contraception through information and incentives.
