Book excerpt: "The only book of its kind exclusively dedicated to the spiritual significance of the Hawaiian lunar calendar...provides a fascinating in-depth perspective of the belief system of the indigenous Hawaiian people, their pre-Christian view of a person as a living spirit being and the underlying concept of mana, or innate spiritual energy that manifests in all things. It defines the spiritual oneness that the early Hawaiians intuitively shared in union with the natural order of the universe and all things in existence. Journey back to a period in Hawaii's remote primeval past, to experience a time of antiquity when the nightly phases of the moon governed almost every aspect of the daily spiritual lifestyle of the ancient Hawaiians. Be transported to a legendary time in the islands when religious taboos, superstition and magical practices prevailed and the teachings of the kahuna powerfully influenced the spiritual destiny of the Hawaiian people. Enter the domain of the sacred, to explore the mysterious secret realm of the kahuna and become one with the sentient consciousness of the divine spirit."--

Book excerpt: As a pregnant Kapukini stands on a precipice at the edge of an ancient volcano in the middle of the pacific where the sky meets the sea, she faces the winds of an uncertain future. With her hands resting on her swollen belly, she decides to comfort her child by sharing the story of their family, how they came to be, and the love that is the roots of this blossom. While Kapukini is present with her unborn child for this one last eternal moment, the tale of an ancient Hawaiian chief’s family lineage unfolds, depicting a forbidden royal romance. Within three generations of love stories creatively retold, the myth about the origin of the native Naupaka flower comes to life as Kapukini returns to ancient Hawaii where gods slide down rainbows to find beautiful maidens, men battle sharks to prove their devotion, women dance hula to share stories and passions, and lovers send kisses on the moonlight to communicate their affections. Naupaka: A Hawaiian Love Story shares fantastical tales about Hawaiian culture, love, family, courage, compassion, adventure, loyalty, mystical realms, and above all, aloha.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, Hawaiian Dictionary has been the definitive and authoritative work on the Hawaiian language. Now this indispensable reference volume has been enlarged and completely revised. More than 3,000 new entries have been added to the Hawaiian-English section, bringing the total number of entries to almost 30,000 and making it the largest and most complete of any Polynesian dictionary. Other additions and changes in this section include: a method of showing stress groups to facilitate pronunciation of Hawaiian words with more than three syllables; indications of parts of speech; current scientific names of plants; use of metric measurements; additional reconstructions; classical origins of loan words; and many added cross-references to enhance understanding of the numerous nuances of Hawaiian words. The English Hawaiian section, a complement and supplement to the Hawaiian English section, contains more than 12,500 entries and can serve as an index to hidden riches in the Hawaiian language. This new edition is more than a dictionary. Containing folklore, poetry, and ethnology, it will benefit Hawaiian studies for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most recent state to join the union, Hawaii is the only one to have once been a royal kingdom. After its "discovery" by Captain Cook in the late 18th Century, Hawaii was fought over by European powers determined to take advantage of its position as the crossroads of the Pacific. The arrival of the first missionaries marked the beginning of the struggle between a native culture with its ancient gods, sexual libertinism and rites of human sacrifice, and the rigid values of the Calvinists. While Hawaii's royal rulers adopted Christianity, they also fought to preserve their ancient ways. But the success of the ruthless American sugar barons sealed their fate and in 1893, the American Marines overthrew Lili'uokalani, the last queen of Hawaii. James L. Haley's Captive Paradise is the story of King Kamehameha I, The Conqueror, who unified the islands through terror and bloodshed, but whose dynasty succumbed to inbreeding; of Gilded Age tycoons like Claus Spreckels who brilliantly outmaneuvered his competitors; of firebrand Lorrin Thurston, who was determined that Hawaii be ruled by whites; of President McKinley, who presided over the eventual annexation of the islands. Not for decades has there been such a vibrant and compelling portrait of an extraordinary place and its people.

Book excerpt: From the Foreword: For more than fifteen years, Pihana Na Mamo, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Native Hawaiian Education Act, has been actively involved with Hawai'i Department of Education schools in improving educational results for Hawaiian children and youth. We have witnessed the powerful role that our rich Hawaiian culture and heritage, and in particular the revival of interest in Native Hawaiian culture and the desire to practice Hawaiian customs appropriately, play in motivating our students to learn and excel. The first step to ensure such an outcome is to gain a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural basis for the many Hawaiian customs and traditions. To this end, Malcolm Naea Chun, a cultural specialist with the Curriculum Research & Development Group (CRDG) of the University of Hawai'i, has researched and compiled valuable information on several Hawaiian cultural traditions and practices. In Alaka'i, Chun addresses the topic of leadership, asking what traditional leadership styles and practices looked like in old Hawai'i, and how those might serve us today. In an earlier publication entitled 'Ano Lani, he wrote about the role of Hawai'i's monarchy and asked the rhetorical question about Hawaiian leadership, "Who is the next Kamehameha?" In Alaka'i, he deepens that inquiry by exploring the roots of Hawaiian leadership through traditional sources and the eye-witness accounts of foreigners as they observed Hawaiian leaders in action. His years of service at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs have given Chun a unique vantage point to see how traditional means of Hawaiian leadership have evolved and how they operated in the modern era. This book is part of the Ka Wana Series, a set of publications developed through Pihana Na Mamo and designed to assist parents, teachers, students, and staff in their study and modern-day application of Hawaiian customs and traditions.
