Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Water Commissioner, the Water Registrar and the City Engineer of the City of Worcester, for the Year Ending November 30, 1901 The keepers in charge of the various reservoirs have kept the buildings and grounds in excellent condition, and many improvements have been made in connection with the same during the year. In addition to the above work much has been accomplished in the direction of improving the water supply by taking ad vantage of the low state of the water in the reservoirs during the summer months to clean the shores to the lowest point possible of all stumps, roots and objectionable material which would in any degree have a tendency to discolor or pollute the water. Holden reservoir N o. 2 has been completed, and, with this additional amount of water added to the storage capacity dur ing the winter and spring months, will help meet the demands of the city during the coming season. A cottage house and barn are in process of construction for the use of the keeper in charge of the reservoirs on this sys tem. The daily consumption of water has increased far in excess of that warranted by the increase in population, and unless this large consumption or waste can be reduced, immediate measures should be taken to secure an unlimited supply, in order to guard against the danger of a water famine during periods of low rainfall, which frequently occur. The distribution systems have been extended in thirty-nine streets, making a total of miles of pipe added during the year. Owing to the rapid growth of the city the demand for water main extensions is constantly increasing, and in order to sup ply the demand large appropriations will be necessary.
