Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Third Annual Report of the Fishery Board for Scotland: Being for the Year 1914 The decrease in the total number of vessels shows the rapidity with which the sailing boats are being superseded by or transformed into vessels propelled by steam or motor power and manned by larger crews. Our anticipation in recent Reports of a large increase in the number of power-propelled fishing vessels has been amply fulfilled. During 1914, 108 steam and 171 motor boats were added to the fishing fleet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Annual Report of the Fishery Board for Scotland, Being for the Year 1898, Vol. 2 of 3: Report on Salmon Fisheries The Waterton dyke is comparatively low and a gap exists in the centre of it. Owing to the rough nature of the river bed immediately below, the position of the pass does not seem to be well selected. Perhaps the simplest plan here would be to insert a diagonal pass on the face of the dyke from the extreme left, where some rocks project. The diagonal to project downwards and outwards for a distance of about 10 feet, so that the foot of it rests upon the lower margin of the dyke. Such a diagonal is most readily formed of 3-inch wood against -iron uprights driven into the face of the dyke. The chief trouble in this locality, however, seems to be the abstraction of water, which during the summer months, and when the water is low, renders the main channel below the dam so dry that fish have not sufficient water in which to ascend. The scientific work has, as usual, been carried out under the supervision of Dr. T. Wemyss Fulton, the Scientific Superintendent under the Board, the researches having been for the most part undertaken at the Marine Laboratory at Aberdeen, in the Moray Firth, and the Firth of Clyde. The sea-fish hatchery, which is also situated at Aberdeen, was reconstructed during the year in connection with the formation of a new road at the Bay of N igg by the Town Council of Aberdeen and at their expense, as described below, where a statement of the hatching operations will also be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Annual Report of the Fishery Board for Scotland: For the Year Ended 31st December 1883 A. Summary of Observations made in Britain as to the Natural History of the Herring previous to 1882. At a very early period the fishery industry was recognised as of national importance, and as worthy of the fostering care of the Legislature, and for a century, at least, the habits of the herring and other food fishes have attracted the attention of many eminent naturalists. In the twelfth century it appears that the right to fish for herrings was vested in the Crown, and for several centuries afterwards those engaged in the industry in Scotland, though willing to hand over their takes to Dutch and other foreign vessels, claimed for them selves the exclusive right of fishing. Notwithstanding this claim, the Dutch had 2000 herring busses' in 1667 fishing in the North Sea, off the Scottish coast. During the fifteenth century it was found necessary to limit the sale of herring to foreigners, that the people at home might be supplied.
