Book Synopsis The National Lottery and Its Regulation by : Andrew Douglas
Download or read book The National Lottery and Its Regulation written by Andrew Douglas and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of a National Lottery into the United Kingdom created a unique regulatory challenge. The response to this challenge is embodied in arrangements informed not by international precedent but by privatisation policies pursued by successive Conservative governments between 1979 and 1994 when the Lottery was launched. Dr Douglas assesses the success of the Lottery's regulation against the objectives set out in the enabling legislation: the upholding of the Lottery's propriety, the protection of the players, and the maximising of the funds to be applied to the Good Causes. Lessons learned during the initial Licence period will inform the new seven year Licence from October 2001, the operator chosen for the new term, and in particular the role of the profit motive within the new arrangements.
Book Synopsis The Regulation of Gambling by : Alan David Littler
Download or read book The Regulation of Gambling written by Alan David Littler and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2005 Tilburg University hosted for the first time an international "Colloquium on the European and National Perspectives of the Regulation of Gambling," The results of this exciting day are reflected in this book which brings together a wide range of perspectives from the contemporary debate surrounding the regulation of gambling markets within the context of the European Union. Not only does the book encompass both ends of the spectrum of the current discussion; it also brings together the perspectives of academics, lawyers and operators. The debate on the regulation of gambling has been gathering pace following a series of judgments of the ECJ. In 2006 gambling was excluded from the proposed Services Directive, and the European Commission commenced infringement proceedings against a handful of Member States regarding restrictions on the supply of sports betting services. Given these developments and being one of the very few publications concerned with this topic, this book will serve as a timely and valuable contribution for all those interested in this emerging and at times decisive debate.

Download or read book Jokers Wild written by Thomas Barker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history and analysis of gambling in the United States from bingo to state lotteries to Indian gaming and the rise of Las Vegas, this book reveals how we have become a nation of gamblers and what the future holds for the gambling industry. From the colonial era to the present, Americans have enjoyed a love-hate relationship with gambling. It is a pastime that has gone from sin to recreational activity, and an industry that has moved from control by organized crime to management by executives with MBAs. While gaming is one of the nation's fastest-growing industries, Barker and Britz predict that this process will slow or stop in the next century as the result of market saturation and unknown social and economic effects which loom over the glitz, glamour, and action. Providing the latest information on the nature and extent of legalized gambling in the United States, this study examines why we gamble and how the relative impact of the activity differs in certain segments of the population. Legalized gambling is, at best, problematic behavior with both good and bad consequences. State-sponsored gambling, both in the form of monopolistic lotteries and in tribal casinos, does to some extent call into question the proper role of the state or tribal nation in promoting a potentially harmful activity among its citizens. States that have looked to legalized gambling as a source of economic salvation may soon experience difficulties as gambling venues multiply and unregulated Internet gambling becomes more widespread.
Book Synopsis Government and the Transformation of the Gaming Industry by : Richard McGowan
Download or read book Government and the Transformation of the Gaming Industry written by Richard McGowan and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s the gambling industry transformed its image by referring to itself as the gaming industry . While critics of the industry scoffed at this transformation as merely a meaningless name change, it has had profound effects on the business and public policies that face the newly transformed gaming industry. The book is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the historical and cultural forces that have shaped the new gaming industry. Emphasis is placed on the two types of games (agon games of skill, and alea games of chance). It is shown that the types of games a society embraces have a significant impact on whether gambling is permitted to enter the mainstream of the entertainment industry. The second part of the book analyzes how each segment (pari mutuel betting, lotteries and casinos) competes in the new industry. The political and social implications of gaming are the focus of the final part, which concludes with a series of recommendations that will enable the industry, public policy officials and anti gambling activists to construct policies that mitigate some of the problems associated with gambling. The book will be of particular interest to students, practitioners and scholars in public policy. It will also be pertinent to readers in economics, political science and business.
