Patients with endogenous-type depressions also responded to clorgyline, suggesting that this drug may have a different spectrum of action from other maoi. It would seem that mao inhibitors should not be considered a single class of drugs, appropriate for only a single patient group or set of symptoms, as some have suggested. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report, Mental Health Intramural Research Program, Vol. 1: Division of Clinical and Behavioral Research, Division of Biological and Biochemical Research, and Division of Special Mental Health Research; July 1, 1974 June 30, 1975; Summary Statements The new method offers extraordinary advantages over existing methods of studying brain function, and Dr. Sokoloff and his colleagues are already exploring a number of fascinating problems: for example, (1) how does morphine affect brain function? At what sites does morphine alter activity? (2) lsd induces a psychosis-like state in human subjects; in animals, what does lsd do to brain function? What brain structures show altered activity after administration of lsd? (3) An infusion of epinephrine produces a feeling of anxiety, a kind of artificial or pseudo anxiety. What brain areas are affected? What parts of the brain mediate the experience of anxiety? The number of problems important to mental health which can be studied by this method is almost endless. It has elicited wide interest from research laboratories in many countries, a number of which have sent staff members to Dr. Sokoloff's Laboratory to take part in his research and learn the new method. Book Synopsis Handbook of Neurochemistry by : Abel Lajtha
Download or read book Handbook of Neurochemistry written by Abel Lajtha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has any contact with mental patients, old or young, or their families, or just visits a mental hospital or school for the retarded, is aware of the tremendous suffering caused by malfunctioning of the brain. The func tion of no other organ is so crucial for our everyday life, our proper func tioning, indeed our happiness, and no other illness causes as much anguish to patients or their families as mental illness. It is surprising and sad, therefore, how little effort has been devoted to research in this area; more so because such research is the only hope to ameliorate this suffering, or, to speak in the language of politics or economics, to decrease the enormous sums that we spend on trying to help our patients, with what is must generally be agreed are the most primitive and inadequate methods of treatment. Clearly, since functions of the brain are vital not only in illness, but in health, pathology is not the only area of concern to neurochemists, but it is an area that urgently needs neurochemical contributions. Progress in this field has been slower than in other areas of neurochemistry, and it seems that solutions in this field are very elusive. The reason for this is that the experimental approach is especially difficult in conditions specific for humans, or specific for complex behavior.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research by : National Research Council
Download or read book Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-08-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding on the National Research Council's Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, this book deals specifically with mammals in neuroscience and behavioral research laboratories. It offers flexible guidelines for the care of these animals, and guidance on adapting these guidelines to various situations without hindering the research process. Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research offers a more in-depth treatment of concerns specific to these disciplines than any previous guide on animal care and use. It treats on such important subjects as: The important role that the researcher and veterinarian play in developing animal protocols. Methods for assessing and ensuring an animal's well-being. General animal-care elements as they apply to neuroscience and behavioral research, and common animal welfare challenges this research can pose. The use of professional judgment and careful interpretation of regulations and guidelines to develop performance standards ensuring animal well-being and high-quality research. Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research treats the development and evaluation of animal-use protocols as a decision-making process, not just a decision. To this end, it presents the most current, in-depth information about the best practices for animal care and use, as they pertain to the intricacies of neuroscience and behavioral research.
