Book Synopsis A History of American Magazines, Volume III: 1865-1885 by : Frank Luther Mott
Download or read book A History of American Magazines, Volume III: 1865-1885 written by Frank Luther Mott and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1938 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this work, covering the period from 1741-1850, was issued in 1931 by another publisher, and is reissued now without change, under our imprint. The second volume covers the period from 1850 to 1865; the third volume, the period from 1865 to 1885. For each chronological period, Mr. Mott has provided a running history which notes the occurrence of the chief general magazines and the developments in the field of class periodicals, as well as publishing conditions during that period, the development of circulations, advertising, payments to contributors, reader attitudes, changing formats, styles and processes of illustration, and the like. Then in a supplement to that running history, he offers historical sketches of the chief magazines which flourished in the period. These sketches extend far beyond the chronological limitations of the period. The second and third volumes present, altogether, separate sketches of seventy-six magazines, including The North American Review, The Youth's Companion, The Liberator, The Independent, Harper's Monthly, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's Weekly, The Atlantic Monthly, St. Nicholas, and Puck. The whole is an unusual mirror of American civilization.

Scientific and technological revolutions, economic and social upheavals, and the outbreak of war changed the course of history. The 1930s also marked a turning point for Robinson Jeffers, both in his career as a poet and in his private life. The letters collected in this second volume of annotated correspondence document Jeffers' rising fame as a poet, his controversial response to the turmoil of his time, his struggles as a writer, the growth and maturation of his twin sons, and the network of friends and acquaintances that surrounded him. The letters also provide an intimate portrait of Jeffers' relationship to his wife Una—including a full account of the 1938 crisis at Mabel Dodge Luhan's home in Taos, New Mexico that nearly destroyed their marriage.

Book Synopsis Silent Memories, Traumatic Lives by : Lesa Melnyczuk
Download or read book Silent Memories, Traumatic Lives written by Lesa Melnyczuk and published by Western Australian Museum. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Memories — Traumatic Lives is a quest for understanding, an attempt to make sense of the very emotional history of the Ukrainian post-war migrants to Western Australia. Ukrainian migrants arrived in Australia by ship between 1947 and 1951, from the Displaced Persons camps of Europe, survivors of the worst of the Soviet regime’s atrocities, including genocidal famine, and only recently released from forced unpaid labour under the German Nazi regime. The testimonies of Ukrainian famine survivors included in this book reflect the findings of similar studies carried out in Ukrainian communities throughout the world. This work adds to mounting evidence of the genocidal nature of the Ukrainian famine of 1932–1933 and the lasting effects it has had on survivors.
Book Synopsis The Turning of the Tides by : Paul W. Shafer
Download or read book The Turning of the Tides written by Paul W. Shafer and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with John Howland Snow, Michigan Representative Paul W. Shafer authored this 1953 exposé on the education system of the United States, which was delivered in the House of Representatives on March 21, 1952. In The Turning of the Tides, the authors take the position that the education system was an alien collectivist (socialist) philosophy, much of which came from Europe, crashed onto the shores of the American nation, bringing with it radical changes in economics, politics, and education, funded by several wealthy American families and their tax-exempt foundations.
Book Synopsis Banaras Reconstructed by : Madhuri Desai
Download or read book Banaras Reconstructed written by Madhuri Desai and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the late sixteenth and early twentieth centuries, Banaras, the iconic Hindu center in northern India that is often described as the oldest living city in the world, was reconstructed materially as well as imaginatively, and embellished with temples, monasteries, mansions, and ghats (riverfront fortress-palaces). Banaras’s refurbished sacred landscape became the subject of pilgrimage maps and its spectacular riverfront was depicted in panoramas and described in travelogues. In Banaras Reconstructed, Madhuri Desai examines the confluences, as well as the tensions, that have shaped this complex and remarkable city. In so doing, she raises issues central to historical as well as contemporary Indian identity and delves into larger questions about religious urban environments in South Asia.
