Book excerpt: In Church and Estate, Thomas Rzeznik examines the lives and religious commitments of the Philadelphia elite during the period of industrial prosperity that extended from the late nineteenth century through the 1920s. The book demonstrates how their religious beliefs informed their actions and shaped their class identity, while simultaneously revealing the ways in which financial influences shaped the character of American religious life. In tracing those connections, it shows how religion and wealth shared a fruitful, yet ultimately tenuous, relationship.

Book excerpt: The untold story of two sisters whose discoveries sped the growth of American science in the nineteenth century, combining "meticulous research and sensitive storytelling" (Janice P. Nimura, New York Times-bestselling author of The Doctors Blackwell) In Mischievous Creatures, historian Catherine McNeur uncovers the lives and work of Margaretta Hare Morris and Elizabeth Carrington Morris, sisters and scientists in early America. Margaretta, an entomologist, was famous among her peers and the public for her research on seventeen-year cicadas and other troublesome insects. Elizabeth, a botanist, was a prolific illustrator and a trusted supplier of specimens to the country’s leading experts. Together, their discoveries helped fuel the growth and professionalization of science in antebellum America. But these very developments confined women in science to underpaid and underappreciated roles for generations to follow, erasing the Morris sisters’ contributions along the way. Mischievous Creatures is an indelible portrait of two unsung pioneers, one that places women firmly at the center of the birth of American science.

Book excerpt: In this biography, the acclaimed author of Sons of Providence, winner of the 2007 George Wash- ington Book Prize, recovers an immensely important part of the founding drama of the country in the story of Robert Morris, the man who financed Washington’s armies and the American Revolution. Morris started life in the colonies as an apprentice in a counting house. By the time of the Revolution he was a rich man, a commercial and social leader in Philadelphia. He organized a clandestine trading network to arm the American rebels, joined the Second Continental Congress, and financed George Washington’s two crucial victories—Valley Forge and the culminating battle at Yorktown that defeated Cornwallis and ended the war. The leader of a faction that included Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Washington, Morris ran the executive branches of the revolutionary government for years. He was a man of prodigious energy and adroit management skills and was the most successful businessman on the continent. He laid the foundation for public credit and free capital markets that helped make America a global economic leader. But he incurred powerful enemies who considered his wealth and influence a danger to public "virtue" in a democratic society. After public service, he gambled on land speculations that went bad, and landed in debtors prison, where George Washington, his loyal friend, visited him. This once wealthy and powerful man ended his life in modest circumstances, but Rappleye restores his place as a patriot and an immensely important founding father.

Book excerpt: "a cogent, complex look at the American Revolution" – Kirkus Reviews Morris in one year put up more money for the war than all the states combined. The spirit of risk and economic freedom that he championed – laissez-faire capitalism, a radical idea – helped us win the war (and gave rise to our modern system). He coordinated the French Fleet and Washington's arrival at Yorktown. He got rid of religious test laws, and signed all three founding documents. His enemies won the election of 1800 and wrote him out of the story. Only Washington was more indispensable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Harrison, Jr. (1741-1815) was a son of Thomas Harrison and Hannah Benson of Thurstonfield, Cumberland County, England; all were Quakers. Thomas, Jr. immigrated in 1763 to Philadelphia, where he married Sarah Richards of Chester County at the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. Both Thomas, Jr. and his wife were active speakers and leaders against slavery, to aid the sick and homeless, and Thomas Jr. was on the city's "orphan committee." Both traveled in these benevolent activities, and Sarah was granted a special audience by George III while on a trip to England. George Leib Harrison (1811- 1885), a grandson of Thomas Jr. and Sarah, married Sarah Ann Waples (d.1850) in 1841, and in 1856 married Letitia Henry Mitchell. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and elsewhere. Includes genealogical data about various lines of ancestors in England, some to the mid-1300s; many of these ancestral lines were part of the English nobility.
