Book Synopsis The Early History of Economics in the United States by : Birsen Filip
Download or read book The Early History of Economics in the United States written by Birsen Filip and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the latter half of the 20th century, the economics departments of American universities were internationally renowned for providing competitive and advanced levels of education. However, from the 1870s up until the beginning of WWI, German universities held international supremacy when it came to the quality of teaching, the enrollment of foreign students, and scholarly publications. This book examines the role of the German Historical School of Economics (GHSE) in the development of the discipline of economics in the US during this period. The chapters explain that, prior to the influence of the GHSE, political economy was in a dismal state in the US, both as a profession and an academic discipline. As a result, many Americans elected to go to Germany in pursuit of an advanced education in political economy, having been inspired by the unmatched international reputations of theorists of the GHSE. After they returned home, these German-trained Americans challenged the dominant status of classical orthodoxy and revolutionized the discipline of economics in the US by importing the ideas, methods, and approaches of the GHSE. In doing so, they established the first dedicated political economy departments, graduate programs, and chairs at American universities and colleges. Although the precise magnitude and value of the influence of the GHSE is impossible to quantify, there is no doubt that Americans are deeply indebted to this school of thought for its contributions to the early development of the discipline of economics in the US. The chapters also examine what has been lost since: the current mainstream in economics has eliminated many of the features that were once so important to the discipline that it has effectively limited contemporary economics to a small fraction of the complex organism defined by the German Historical School. This situation has facilitated the poverty of the leading economic school of thought, as well as the discipline of economics in general. This book represents a significant contribution to the literature on the history of economic thought and economic education in the US. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of economics, political science, sociology, and the philosophy of economics.

Download or read book Calvin Coolidge written by M.C. Murphy and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This portrait of Calvin Coolidge reveals an astute politician and thinker seeking to restrain the unprecedented spending pressures of the 1920s and maintain a limited role for the federal government within his definition of progressivism. He did so without a strong party caucus in Congress. Instead, he used considerable rhetorical skills, a knack for publicity, and the advent of radio and other new forms of mass-circulation media to sway public opinion and keep his priorities at the forefront of national politics throughout his presidency. The book argues that, although Coolidge has been seen as the inspiration for supply-side economics and tax cuts amid growing budget deficits since the 1980s, his policy was to secure budget surpluses and debt reduction before tax cuts. The book examines his approach to the issues that continue to trouble American politics today, including questions about the scale and scope of the federal government.

Book Synopsis US Foreign Policy and the Multinational Force in Lebanon by : Corrin Varady
Download or read book US Foreign Policy and the Multinational Force in Lebanon written by Corrin Varady and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh perspective on the impact of the US intervention in Lebanon in 1982 and the decision-making drivers that led the Reagan Administration into the Lebanese Civil War. Based on newly released archival materials from high level Washington officials such as President Reagan, Secretary of State Shultz and Secretary of Defense Weinberger, it argues that the failure of the Reagan Administration to accurately understand the complex political landscape of the Lebanese Civil War resulted in the US-led Multinational Force becoming militarily intertwined in the conflict. This book challenges the notion that Reagan deployed US Marines under the ideals of international peacekeeping, asserting that the US Administration hoped that the Multinational Force would create the political capital that Reagan needed to strengthen the US’ position both in the Middle East and globally. Ultimately, the peacemakers were forced to withdraw as they evolved into antagonists. A case study in the foreign policy doctrines of key Washington decision-makers throughout the 1980s, this project is perfect for any International Relations scholar or interested reader seeking to understand the links between the mistakes of the Reagan Administration and contemporary US interventions in the Middle East.

Download or read book La méthode de la référence à l'ordre juridique compétent en droit international privé written by and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1987-04-14 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereign Equality of States in International Law, R.P. Anand R.P. Anand, Professor at the Jawaharlal University of New Delhi, points out in the introduction of his course that the principle of sovereign equality of States refers to two twin principles which are accepted as unimpeachable norms of modern international law which cannot be questioned: the principles of equality and of sovereignty of States. Taking this as his starting point, the author first discusses the sovereignty of States in an interdependent world. He then examines the principle of equality of States in an unequal world from a historical perspective. Finally, Professor Anand tackles the questions of equality of States in a hierarchical world order, and mini-States and equality of rights. La Méthode de la Référence à l'Ordre juridique compétent en Droit international privé, Paolo Picone Paolo Picone, Professor at the University of Naples, notes in the introduction to his course that contemporary international law, such as it evolved during the 19th century, developed different methods of coordination. One method has nevertheless been neglected, which consist in choosing not the applicable law, but the competent legal system. After discussing the crisis in private international law, the author examines the method of coordination of legal systems based on the applicable law, followed by one that is based on reference to the @@@competent legal system. @@@He describes the functioning of the latter method in the case of the creation of legal situations in the @@@for, and in the case of recognition of foreign legal situations in the for. Professor Picone finishes his course by investigating the use of this method in solving the problem of preliminary matters in private international law, the method's area of application and its future prospects.
