Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania, 1755-1855 The most celebrated of his sons was Logan, the Mingo chief. By the journal of Mack and Grube, Moravian missionaries, it appears he lived at the mouth of the Chillisquaque creek, August 26, 1753. In 1765 he lived in Raccoon valley, at the foot of the Tuscarora mountain. London, in his collections, says he could speak tol crable English, was a remarkably tall man - over six feet high and well proportioned; of brave, open, and manly countenance, as straight as an arrow, and apparently afraid of no one. In 1 768 and 1769 he resided near Reedsville, in Mifflin county, and has given his name to the spring near that place, to Logan's branch of Spring creek, in Centre county, Logan's path, 810. See a notice of an interview with him in the memoir of Samuel Maclay, postea, year 1811. Heckewelder says he was introduced to Logan in 1772. I thought him a man of superior talents. He then intended set tling on the Ohio, below Big Beaver. In April, 177 3, I called at his settlement, and was received with great civility. In 1774 oc curred Lord Dunmore's expedition against the Shawanese towns, now Point Pleasant, West Virginia, which was the occasion of Logan's celebrated speech, commencing I appeal to any white man to say if he ever entered Logan's cabin hungry, and he gave him not meat 3 which will go down to all time, whether properly or not, as a'splen did outburst of Indian eloquence. Book Synopsis Warfare and Logistics along the US-Canadian Border during the War of 1812 by : Christopher D. Dishman
Download or read book Warfare and Logistics along the US-Canadian Border during the War of 1812 written by Christopher D. Dishman and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher D. Dishman provides a comprehensive study of the combat that took place along the US-Canadian frontier during the War of 1812, where the bulk of the war’s fighting took place. The border region, which included the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes, served as Britain’s supply line to receive and distribute supplies. The region’s size, varied topography, and undeveloped infrastructure, however, made this a challenging environment to move troops and supplies to the battlefield. Few large settlements or all-season roads intersected the region, so reinforcements, food, or ammunition could be weeks or months away from their destination. Dishman analyzes the critical role of logistics and explains how the safe and timely arrival of soldiers, shipwrights, cannons, and other provisions often dictated a battle’s outcome before a shot was fired. The northern frontier between the United States and the British Empire remained the focus of US military efforts throughout the war. The president and Congress declared war on Britain to force its leaders to negotiate on bilateral issues, and America’s only viable offensive military option was to invade Canada. Victory for either side depended on enough men and materials arriving promptly at a remote outpost or dockyard from distant supply depots. Canada could not produce many of its needed items in-country, so America retained a distinct advantage with its indigenous metalworks and iron industries. These components proved critical in a war that depended on the rushed construction of vessels that could outgun their enemy. Warfare and Logistics along the US-Canadian Border during the War of 1812 is a deeply researched and highly readable assessment of the successes and failures of military operations from 1812 to 1814. The book also highlights the interdependencies between land and naval operations in the war and illuminates the influence of changing military and political factors on Britain's and America’s military objectives. Warfare and Logistics along the US-Canadian Border during the War of 1812 also evaluates the performance of the military and civilian officers as Dishman brings a distant war’s battles to life with stories from participating soldiers and civilians.
Book Synopsis Pioneers of Second Fork by : James P. Burke
Download or read book Pioneers of Second Fork written by James P. Burke and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the undocumented mysteries of the past is similar to analyzing the remains of an old campfire pit. Only black, charded ashes remain of what once was a blazing fire. The smoke from the old campfire has long since disappeared into the atmosphere. the cracking sounds of hot flames dancing through the burning longs have long since vanished into memories of the past. The author's quest for information on the early pioneers of Second Fork has taken him from the State Museum in Augusta Maine to the Civil War prison in Andersonville, Georgia, visiting historical societies, libraries, museums, battlefields, cemeteries and other points of historical significance in between. He has interviewed numerous pioneer descendants and historians. The family profiles of these pioneers takes the reader on an adventure from the Court of Queen Catherine in England to the shores of Plymouth Harbor and on to Los Angles, California, founded by a son of a pioneer born and educated in the backwoods of Second Fork. Emerging from the bits and pieces of information, the author has rekindled the old campfire into an illuminating history of the Pioneers of Second Fork. James Burke is President of the Mt. Zion Historical Society. The Mt. Zion Historical Society has developed and currently is expanding a historical park dedicated to acknowledging and preserving the history and heritage of the Bennett's Branch.
